As start dates for school inch closer, educators and health officials are unveiling plans to go back to school safely. One focus: face masks.“It’s important for people to understand germs,” Laura-Anne Cleveland, an associate nursing officer at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, said. Cleveland says everything starts with education. “Trying to get them to understand that air and breath from us can have germs in it," she said.Cleveland said the best way to do that with younger kids is through a little science experiment.“Putting a container of water, putting pepper in it and putting soap on their finger and putting your finger in. The pepper disperses, and so showing that the pepper is the germs and soap and things like that are really good to be able to use,” she explained.As schools finalize plans for reopening--whether that be online, in person, or a combination of the two--masks have become one of the biggest talking points.“I have never dealt with anything like this,” Marty Gutierrez, an 8th-grade math teacher, said. Gutierrez has been teaching for 26 years.“So much is up in the air and we start back to school in three weeks,” he explained. “And we don’t have guidelines or they are changing every day or even two, three times a day.”One of those guidelines is whether masks will be recommended or required.“Like anything recommended or required with middle school kids, it’s that year where you push boundaries,” Gutierrez said. “I get parents and their ideals and values and what they want their freedoms to be. Just getting kids to wear masks is going to be difficult enough, and we know we’re going to have some kids that ‘You know what? My parents don’t want me wearing a mask.'”If schools recommend masks instead of requiring them, there are fears this could open up doors for bullying.“I’m sure that there will be some kids that are harassing kids for not wearing a mask, or kids that have a different mask,” he said.Or conversations about fairness.“If you have a sibling that has to wear a mask but you don't have to, it’s going to not feel fair,” Cleveland said.Masks have become controversial, but to Gutierrez, it’s just an extra layer of safety for everyone in the building, including those who may be at high-risk for getting COVID-19.“People are scared. I have friends that have children that are recovering from cancer, or I have friends that take care of elderly parents that are immunocompromised,” he said.Cleveland and Gutierrez, both parents, themselves, want to keep kids in school and make sure kids remember the why.“Why are we wearing masks? Why are we wearing face shields? Things like that, and getting the children to understand that,” Cleveland explained.“This is the best we can do right now, and if we don't follow these guidelines, you're not going to be seeing these friends again, we’re going to go back to that situation where you’re only going to see them online. So, I think it’s expressing that trade-off,” Gutierrez said. 2991

BALDWIN, La. — New details are emerging as law enforcement investigates the death of a 15-year-old boy who died under suspicious circumstances in Louisiana.KATC obtained police reports from Oct. 30 when the teen, Quawan “Bobby” Charles, was reported missing from his home in Baldwin and was found dead four days later near Loreauville.Records show that Charles’ mother contacted the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office around 8:10 p.m. on Oct. 30 to report that her son was missing. The mother stated that her son did not come home and had on a West St. Mary High School jacket.SMPSO then dispatched an officer with the Baldwin Police Department to the 600 block of MLK Street in Baldwin.At 8:45 p.m., BPD spoke with Charles’ father and mother who said that he was last seen at around 4 p.m. Police then entered Charles’ name into the National Crime Information Center, which is a nationwide database used by law enforcement to locate missing persons, as a missing juvenile.According to a police report from BPD, Charles’ mother said that she was not present at the time that he went missing because he was staying with his father because the two did not live together. Charles had only recently been allowed to stay with his father for the two weeks prior to his disappearance.Charles’ father told police that he went to the store around 4 p.m., but after returning a few minutes later, he attempted to knock on the door to Charles’ room several times without a response.The father told police that he then used a tool to gain entry into the room and discovered the teen was missing.Both parents told police that Charles had not been a problem at home but had been placed on a curfew by the 16th Judicial District Court because of disciplinary problems at school.The parents told police that Charles did not have any friends and had never left home before without them knowing about it.The police state in the report that there was a football game taking place at West St. Mary High School in Baldwin as well as an event called Boo on the Bayou in Franklin. Charles’ father told police he would begin searching those areas. However, he later contacted SMPSO and said he was not able to locate Charles’ at either location.This is when police entered Charles’ name into the NCIC database as a missing juvenile while being on the lookout for him.Charles’ mother then told police that she would be heading back to her home in Youngsville to check and see if he had returned there.Charles was found dead four days later on Nov. 4 in a rural area off Ed Broussard Road near Loreauville. Since then, some family members are claiming Charles was murdered, and believe police ignored their initial cries for help.The family tells KATC they were told by investigators that Bobby drowned, but that they don't believe that. They cite a graphic photo of his body circulating online.Family members also say Charles left his home with a 17-year-old friend and the teen's mother without permission.Several dozen people, including Bobby's family, people from the community, and an organization called Stand Black, gathered on the courthouse steps Wednesday evening. They're demanding a thorough investigation of the case.The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation. Deputies have not said if Charles was killed. IPSO says it's being investigated under suspicious circumstances. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas and six other states are suing to end once and for all a program that would protect some young immigrants from deportation.The lawsuit announced Tuesday comes a week after a federal judge in Washington ordered the Trump administration to resume the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.Immigrants under the Obama-era program are commonly referred to as "Dreamers." Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had threatened legal action for the past year if the program didn't come to a halt.Joining Texas in the lawsuit are Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina and West Virginia.A federal judge in Washington called the Department of Homeland Security's rationale against the program "arbitrary and capricious." As of Tuesday, Petco says they no longer sell electronic "shock" collars and have removed them from its shelves and website.The company said they stopped selling the human- and bark-activated electronic pet collars in a press release on Tuesday because they wanted to strengthen their commitment to positive reinforcement training methods. They also wanted to solidify their evolution from "a leading pet specialty retailer to a category-defining health and wellness partner" for animals and their owners."Electricity may be critical to powering your microwave, but it has no role for the average pet parent training their dog," said Petco CEO Ron Coughlin in the press release. "Shock collars have been shown to increase fear, anxiety, and stress in dogs, and we believe there's a better way – Positive Reinforcement Training."The San Diego-based company is also calling on the pet industry and consumers to join in its newly launched "Stop the Shock" online campaign that will create "responsible regulation for the retail sale of shock collars to general consumers."Along with today's announcement, Petco also launched a new look declaring itself "Petco, The Health + Wellness Co." to reflect how they've evolved into a health and wellness company."As a health and wellness company, our mission is focused on improving pet lives, and we think selling shock collars does the opposite," Coughlin said in the news release. As the NHL went into what it calls “Phase 2” of its plans to resume the 2019-20 season, the league announced that 23 players tested positive for the coronavirus.The 23 players who tested positive is in addition to 12 players who previously tested positive in early June when the league began “Phase 1” of its reopening plan. All told, the league has had 35 players test positive.So far, the league has administered a total of 2,900 tests, with 396 having been tested so far. The tests have been administered to players representing 24 of 31 teams who will participate in the league’s postseason.The league said it will not identify those who test positive for the virus.The league suspended play in mid-March in an effort to help stop the spread of the virus. The league left off as most teams played roughly 70 games of an 82-game schedule.Days after the league’s shutdown, an Ottawa Senators player became the first player to test positive for the virus.When the league resumes, a tournament be held to conclude the season with games played between two “hub cities.” With coronavirus cases declining in Canada while still on the rise in the US, it is likely the NHL will conclude its season north of the border. 1221
