SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-elected San Diego District 4 councilwoman Monica Montgomery is vowing to improve the relationship between her community and the police department. On Monday, she was unanimously appointed to the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee. More than a dozen community members spoke during a special meeting on Monday, backing Montgomery. The overwhelming support for her appointment quickly turned to frustration and anger towards the rest of the council and the police department about Aleah Jenkins, who died in SDPD custody early this month. Montgomery says she hears the community's frustration and is ready to get to work. "A lot of this stems just not from the support of me, but the desire to have real action in our community when it comes to our police and community relations," said Montgomery.She plans on taking a closer look at an SDSU racial profiling study within the department and look into possibly giving the Community Review Board subpoena powers to allow them to perform independent investigations and obtain sworn testimony during alleged police misconduct. "I'm confident we'll do the right thing. Everyone will need to do the right thing; we're at a crossroads and we need to do the right thing by our people and by our officers," added Montgomery. The police department insists there is no evidence of force used during Jenkins' arrest and is referring all questions to the district attorney. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parts of Balboa Park reopened Friday after the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures in March.Park officials said the following areas would reopen: Central Mesa (El Prado, Plaza de Panama, Cabrillo Bridge, Pan American Plaza), all parking lots, Prado Restaurant, Tea Pavilion, and Visitors Center.Tim Lu and his daughter Matilda have been looking forward to a bike ride at the park for a long time.They live nearby and drove by regularly ever since the park closed. Week after week, all they saw were empty streets and sidewalks.When they got the news that parts of Balboa Park were going to reopen, Lu wanted to make sure they were there for the first day. And he wasn’t alone, as others showed up equally as happy to see the park reopen.Sarah Beckman, director of the Balboa Park Conservancy, said, “This is part of people’s daily routines. This is a neighborhood park. It’s also a global destination but our friends have been missing this for a long time now.”While at the park or the trails, San Diego County and city health orders are still in effect. They have signs posted around the property to remind you. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead after a shooting in the Mountain View area Wednesday.San Diego Police responded to reports of a shooting just before 3 p.m. in the 3500 block of Florence Lane. Officers arrived to find a victim in an alley suffering from a gunshot wound, according to City News Service.The victim, described only as a male, was pronounced dead at the scene.The suspected shooter was described as a man who appeared in his 30s, wearing shots and a black tank top. He seen fleeing the area with another person in a silver Dodge Ram pickup or similar truck, CNS reported.SDPD is investigating. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Neighbors point to a devastating Northern California fire as their strongest case towards getting the latest housing development denied in East County.Dozens killed and home after home devastated by the Camp Fire in Paradise, Calif., last year."A fire here would cause massive casualties and probably burn into Chula Vista or San Diego," Peter Anderson, of the Sierra Club, said in front of the County Administration Building Wednesday.Neighbors and environmental advocates opposed to Otay Ranch Village 14 say the county needs to stop piling up hazards. Despite the protest, the county moved Wednesday to move forward with the project."This is a catastrophe in the making," Dan Silver, of the Endangered Habitats League, said. "There are tens of thousands of unbuilt units in good village locations, there is no need to put a project in such a dangerous location."Those opposed also believe evacuations would be an issue adding the infrastructure should go elsewhere.The locations for many of the new housing developments in San Diego have been called dangerous. Near Escondido, the Harmony Grove and Valiano subdivison faced similar fire fears related criticism but both were eventually passed by the county board."This project is the poster child for dangerous sprawl development," Anderson said.People who don't want to see more homes built where fires have burned feel it's about putting more folks in harms way. 1444
