(KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's deputies were investigating a deadly shooting in Fallbrook on Saturday.SDSO homicide detectives were called to the 700 block of Convertible Lane just after 12 p.m. for reports of gunshots by neighbors.Deputies arrived to find an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds. ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - In one of the closest races this election cycle in San Diego County, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed added nine votes to his narrow lead Tuesday. He now holds a 29-vote advantage over challenger Paul McNamara.Abed is seeking a third term as mayor, first winning in 2010. He was previously a councilman from 2004-2010.Political analyst John Dadian told 10News he did not anticipate the race being so close. "I did not see it coming, so I am suprised. Going into the last week of the campaign, all the people I talked to that really know that area well, they did not see this coming."Dadian feels several factors are playing a role in tightening the race. He cites changing demographics in Escondido, pulling away from the city's long-time conservative majority. Another conservative incumbent, Ed Gallo, appears to be losing his seat, as well.In addition, Democrats in the region had a large turnout, based largely on the unsuccessful effort to oust Congressman Duncan Hunter. That large turnout may have had a down-ballot effect on the mayoral race.Dadian also sites Abed's controversial stance on immigration, leading Escondido's bid to support efforts against California's sanctuary laws and visiting the White House for a highly-publicized meeting with President Trump. Dadian believes that may have helped enthuse opposition against Abed.As of Tuesday night, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu says there are still 299,000 ballots to count county-wide. FALLBROOK (CNS) - Four residents were displaced Tuesday when a fire broke out in the garage and damaged part of their Fallbrook home, authorities said.The blaze was reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. at a home in the 2000 block of Pomegranate Lane, off South Stage Coach Lane north of Fallbrook High School, according to North County Fire Protection District spokesman John Choi.Firefighters from the Oceanside and Camp Pendleton fire departments responded to the scene along with Cal Fire San Diego personnel to help douse the blaze, which fully engulfed the garage and extended into portions of the home and the attic, Choi said.Crews knocked down the flames within 35 minutes, but the fire caused extensive damage to the garage and minimal damage to the home, he said.No injuries were reported.The American Red Cross was called to the scene to help the displaced residents -- four adults and one pet -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 989

(KGTV) - A man has been arrested in connection with the Fallsbrea fire that broke out in Fallbrook on Sunday, according to the San Diego Sheriff's department.The brush fire started in the area of Ramona Drive and Pala Road around 12:15 p.m.When a deputy arrived on scene to investigate the smoke, the deputy saw a white man walking away from what appeared to be the point of origin of the fire, a press release states. The man was identified as 34-year-old Brad Arands.Arands was disheveled and his behavior was suspicious, deputies said. Arands was detained until the fire was controlled and a further investigation could be conducted.The fire burned approximately five acres and threatened numerous homes. One outbuilding was destroyed. The fire was 100 percent contained by about 4 p.m. Arands was arrested on suspicion of felony arson and booked at the Vista Detention Facility.   950

Emily Dorffer is a walking story, so it’s fitting she plans to make a career out of telling them.“I’m just one of those determined little stinkers that just never gives up,” Dorffer said.An important chapter in her life will end soon — the next time she walks the Johns Hopkins University campus it will be as a graduate.The English major's love for writing started at a young age, and she never let Cerebral Palsy keep the words from flowing. “In my case, that means I have some slight fine motor skills difficult,” Dorffer said. “Which basically for me means messy handwriting, and I get a little bit tired if I have to write a whole lot at once.”So, how did she get to the point of becoming a published author and college graduate?“Typing is no problem at all.”But don't call her an inspiration.“It’s my life it’s my normal, I understand that it’s not most people’s version of normal but it’s mine.”Dorffer put together together an anthology of stories from disabled writers from around the world.“There’s a wide range of topics. There’s some simple stuff like a character just goes and shops for groceries and you see how her anxiety disorder affects her,” Dorfer said.The stories for (Dis) Ability: A Short Story Anthology started piling in.“This story deals with more assistive technology and the adjustment to that as well the character's self-image and how that develops through the story,” Dorffer said.Shifting the focus away from the disability to the strong storytelling of talented authors.“It’s an intimidating issue to talk about something that their just not familiar with and they're afraid of offending people obviously.Her mother Virginia couldn't be prouder of her favorite haiku writer. “Even as a parent I never knew she could accomplish what she has accomplished. If you just let anybody do what their passionate about it’s amazing what they can do. You should never say no to somebody.”Emily is looking forward to life as a graduate, wherever the next chapter may be. “If you are going to say I can’t it better be followed up with yet,” said Dorffer.Johns Hopkins University Commencement is May 23, the keynote speaker is the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative Bryan Stevenson. 2259
