SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The restrictions due to the pandemic are exposing us to another threat.Between restaurants and gyms being outside and SDG&E urging energy conservation during the heat wave with all of us at home, we're more exposed to the heat and the potential dangers that come with it.Nurse Practitioner Samantha Gambles Farr works in the ICU for UC San Diego Health and said she's seen a handful of cases in the last month, which is more than normal.Each year, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention says an average of 658 people die from extreme heat in the U.S.Gambles Farr said it's important to know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke, "when you have heat exhaustion, your skin will be cold, clammy and you'll be sweaty. When you bridge over to heat stroke you'll have no sweating, you'll be red, and your body temperature will be over 103 degrees."Other symptoms for heat exhaustion include:? Muscle cramping ? Fatigue ? Headache ? Nausea or vomiting ? Dizziness or faintingSymptoms for heat stroke:? A body temperature greater than 103°F (39.4°C) ? Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating) ? Rapid, strong pulse ? UnconsciousnessIf you're suffering heat stroke, Gambles Farr says your body is literally cooking, "you can start having what we call multi-system organ failure in which your kidneys can be affected, you're not getting rid of waste in that point in time and a lot of times these patients become unconscious."One of the dangers with drinking alcohol while in the heat, Gambles Farr explained, is that person isn't moving around as much and therefore unable to recognize the affect of the heat. She said the situation becomes most dangerous when someone who is intoxicated passes out in the heat.If you see someone suffering from heat stroke, call 911. While waiting for help, cool the person down with water, or put ice packs on their neck and armpits.To stay healthy, the CDC and Gambles Farr say stay hydrated, avoid alcoholic beverages, wear sunscreen and loose fitting clothing.Those most at risk, according to the CDC, are children, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions 2204

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego FBI is asking for information on an image, which it says may help lead to the identification and rescue of child victims.One of the images shared to the FBI’s Twitter page shows a piece of clothing that appears to depict a cartoon character on a broomstick. The FBI also shared a PDF with more images in an effort to dig up information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, the Drug Enforcement Administration is adding vaping products to the list of what they’ll accept on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The agency will be accepting prescriptions and vaping products on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to the agency, nearly 10 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs in 2018. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there have been 33 deaths in 24 states and nearly 1,500 lung injuries from vaping in 2019.The agency is treating the events like an outbreak, saying the best advice is to avoid using all forms of E-Cigarettes. The DEA decided to add vaping products to their drug take back event to make sure they're safely removed."If people throw them away, if people dump them down the toilet, if people store them in a drawer, they're still not safe," says DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Roane." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Medical Examiner ruled the death of a teenager who jumped off a bridge in Carmel Valley was an accident. Ruben Ortiz, 18, was one of six people in a Nissan Altima on July 9 when the car crashed on SR-56.Two passengers got out of the car and ran away, officers said. Ortiz and 17-year-old Jesse Garcia jumped 80 feet off the bridge into Gonzales Creek, not realizing it was a dangerous drop, according to investigators. Garcia and Ortiz, who suffered multiple blunt force injuries, died at the scene. RELATED: Teen identified after deadly jump from Carmel Valley bridge following crash A toxicology test showed Ortiz had THC and a trace amount of alcohol in his blood. California Highway Patrol officers said Garcia had been driving the night of the crash. Investigators found an open beer can in the center console. Two girls, ages 14 and 15, suffered severe injuries. The two unharmed passengers were later found for questioning.The CHP has not determined why the car spun out of control. 1030
