A trip to Detroit has landed a Texas couple in hot water with the law. The couple, John Guerrero and Virginia Yearnd, traveled to Detroit to attend a concert. They are facing charges child endangerment charges for allegedly leaving their 11-year-old daughter at home alone while they were in Michigan.Police say it took them hours to get ahold of the parents, and by the time they called back, they said they were in Louisiana.It appears that the couple expected the mother's sister to be checking on the girl, but investigators say that didn't happen.One of their neighbors, who did not want to be identified, said after living next door for more than a year, she didn't think of the couple as bad parents."I know them as good parents, very hardworking," she said. "He travels and his job is to set up concerts. I'm sure he was working and not just going to a rock concert."Part of the problem for investigators was that there were no notes or contact information for the sister who was allegedly supposed to be looking after the daughter.Right now, the 11-year-old is staying with a neighbor while the parents sort out legal troubles.Texas law states that child endangerment occurs when a person intentionally engages in conduct that places a child younger than 15 in danger 1294

It aims to help people realize that science can help manage chaos.The "Getting Through It" podcast is centered around a renowned expert whom many consider to be the voice of calm in a crisis.Dr. Lucy Jones takes on terrifying topics, like earthquakes, with ease. Back in August 2019, Jones led a group of Southern California leaders and curious earthquake adventurers on a tour along the San Andreas fault. She discussed "lifelines" which are electricity, water, gas, transportation and telecommunications lines, things that connect us all. She discussed how all of those things would be impacted during an earthquake, and what that would mean for us all.And while a terrifying topic, she does it with ease, easing fear for listeners. Now, she's taking on the next fear, the one we can't stop talking about.“It’s a scary time but if you understand the world it makes it less scary and that’s what I’m trying to do to help us all get through one of the really big change moments,” Dr. Jones said. “It’s not just that people are dying, this type of disruption will change our society. We will be a different culture in a year.”In 2016, Jones, a seismologist who worked with the US Geological Survey for more than 30 years, founded the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society with the mission of helping communities adapt to the "dynamic changes of the world around them." Her new podcast "Getting Through It" does just that.“We see all of these things that make something frightening or not and they happen over different time scales,” Dr. Jones said. “The earthquake is in a minute, the pandemic in a year, a flood in a month, climate change over 100 years, but all are disrupting society, killing people and damaging the economy and one of the big things we see in these situations is we’re frightened.”Thus far, the podcast has taken on topics like "surviving the pandemic with science" and "why you feel/fear the way you do about disasters."“There’s these sort of big picture understanding of how humans operate, how disasters affect us that have a lot of implications right now,” Dr. Jones said. “This is going to be a tough year. The pandemic is not over, we’re handling it worse than a lot of other countries for a lot of reasons, and right there it easy to blame. There’s a lot to go around but if we focus on that, where’s that going to lead us?”Her co-host and community resilience expert John Bwarie says they've been getting a lot of public reaction during the pandemic. People wanted Dr. Jones to weigh in.“Everyone’s at home, people are seeking, craving information that gives them a sense of calm and gives them a sense of control over the crisis because someone they trust is giving them information they can use. We thought now is the time to do this,” Bwarie said.They work together at the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society. Because the pandemic isn't going away, they figured they would help people through conversation.“We ask them what do you want to know and the response is how do I plan for my future or what’s gonna happen next it's not about a specific pandemic or specific natural disaster like an earthquake or wildfire it’s just about getting through it,” said Bwarie.When we asked why people find it so necessary and important to hear from a voice of reason right now, Bwarie said, “Part of what makes Dr. Jones so calming is her ability to communicate the information that is very complex and seems very difficult to understand she puts it in simple terms but also her tone, she’s very human in her communication.”There are a lot of things we do know, according to science: Wear a mask. Being outside is better.The podcast will discuss topics like children, mental health, working at home. COVID-19 she says, has exposed our major societal flaws. A Michigan hospital is facing a federal lawsuit alleging racial discrimination by a nurse who says she was told not to care for a patient because of her race.Teoka Williams works as a Registered Nurse at Beaumont Health's campus in Dearborn. Her lawsuit alleges that while working on the unit on Oct. 2, she overheard a patient say she did not want a "Black B****" taking care of her.Williams claims she told the clinical manager about the comment and that clinical manager then talked to the patient, who told her she did not want Williams to care for her.The clinical manager then allegedly told the patient that she would "move" Williams and that the patient would not have to see her anymore.The clinical manager then told Williams she was not to go into the patient's room and if either patient in the room needed care a white nurse named Olivia was required to go into the room, according to the suitThe lawsuit alleges that there were times when the patients in the room needed care and Williams was forbidden from doing so because of her race.Williams' lawsuit contends that she told Human Resources about the incident and was told that patient requests are honored all the time and that the next time it happened, she would be taken off the assignment altogether.The lawsuit contends Beaumont violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Michigan's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. A social media post crediting a Nashville man for stepping in to comfort a flight passenger who was body-shamed has gained plenty of attention.Savannah Phillips wrote on Facebook about her experience after being called "a smelly fatty" on board a United flight from Oklahoma to Illinois on Monday. The mother said she always preferred to sit by herself in flights because she was self-conscious about her weight, and feared others would feel uncomfortable sitting next to her.A man she described to be in his 60s with yellow sunglasses who claimed to be a comedian sat next right next to her.Her post stated,"As soon as I got buckled, he sat back down...his phone was maybe 12 inches from my face and he proceeded to text someone that he was sitting next to a "smelly fatty." I don’t even know what the rest of his text said. I turned my head away as fast as I could. I was shocked and it was like confirmation of the negative things I think about myself on a daily basis. Before I knew it, I could feel hot, salty tears coming down my face."Phillips told Scripps station WTVF in Nashville she began to cry and even prayed for the man. Unbeknownst to her, another passenger sitting in the row behind them across the aisle also happened to see the message on his phone."He tapped him on the shoulder and said, 'I need to talk to you'" she recalled. "The guy took his earphones out and turned around and he said, 'We're switching seats right now.'" Phillips remembered the passenger saying he was not going to put up with what the man said. They eventually switched seats, and an unlikely and pleasant encounter ensued."When he sat down he saw me crying and asked why I was crying." Phillips said. "He said to not let it get to me and not to worry about it, and we started making small talk which made me feel better." She learned the passenger who helped comfort her was Chase Irwin, a father and manager at Dierks Bentley's Whiskey Row Nashville on Broadway.Phillips shared her experience on social media in hopes he would be recognized, and within half an hour, he acknowledged reading the post.Irwin emphasized to WTVF on the phone that he did not intervene for publicity. He described feeling infuriated once seeing the message from the man's phone after he further said he was going to vomit. "I was going to wait until the end of the flight to say something but I could not have this guy sit next to her this whole flight and her thinking he's making fun of her," Irwin said. "It really gets to me deep down when I see someone crying, and when I saw her crying it really hit me hard and actually got sick to my stomach.""I was so blessed and happy he was there," Phillips added.
