SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hours after Navy officials said all fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were extinguished, smoke was visible coming from the vessel at Naval Base San Diego early Friday morning.Radio scanner traffic obtained by ABC 10News indicated crews at the scene reported at least two fires onboard the ship and called for evacuations at around 1 a.m. Friday. The 10News Breaking News Tracker observed smoke coming from the ship’s front end.At around 5 a.m., a Navy spokesperson confirmed to ABC 10News that no evacuations were ordered and all fires were out. The spokesperson said investigators were looking into the matter.On Thursday afternoon, Navy officials said all known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were declared out. The blaze on the ship erupted on the morning of July 12, and the firefighting efforts involving hundreds of crew members and thousands of aerial water drops took four full days.Navy officials said they will not know the exact cause of the fire until the ship can be inspected fully.ABC 10News learned Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday will be at Naval Base San Diego on Friday to inspect the USS Bonhomme Richard.During a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck described the 22-year-old ship as ravaged -- its melted aluminum superstructure bent at a 45-degree angle -- but not dead in the water."The ship can be repaired," he said. They met when they were young and growing up in Mosul, Iraq.Now over 100 years old, Elias is a little hard of hearing, but still loves his wife deeply. The couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this week, and one of their granddaughters, Lana, helped share their story"He used to tutor her when she was in high school, and they fell in love," Lana says. "The American dream they wanted, they wanted a better life, of course, they were under Saddam Hussein's reign at that time, so they just wanted a better life for their future."That was more than 30 years ago. So why did they choose Rancho San Diego as their new home?"Because it was similar weather to Iraq and they just wanted a similar, warm and sunny environment," Lana said.The celebration came with a trip to the Hotel del Coronado and a cake. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Gusty Santa Ana winds and dry conditions prompted the National Weather Service to declare a Red Flag Warning for parts of San Diego County.A Fire Weather Watch was initially set to take effect Thursday, but NWS officials -- citing Santa Ana winds and low humidity -- updated the declaration into a Red Flag Warning.The warning is scheduled to take effect Thursday at 10 a.m. and will expire at 10 p.m. Friday. As a result, Cal Fire is increasing staffing this week. LATEST WEATHER FORECASTNWS officials said, “Santa Ana winds will develop Thursday with peak winds arriving Thursday night into Friday morning before gradually decreasing Friday afternoon and evening. A very dry air mass will spread into southern California on Thursday with lowest daytime humidity on Friday around 5 percent.”According to NWS officials, the Red Flag Warning will impact the San Diego region’s mountain and inland valleys.“Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly with extreme fire behavior possible.
