"A vehicle was eastbound on Newton Avenue when it stopped in the intersection and someone inside fired multiple rounds at the group."A 44-year-old man was shot in the head and paramedics took him to a hospital, the officer said. "At this time, his injuries are non-life-threatening."A 29-year-old man was shot in the right arm and driven to a hospital by an unknown person, Heims said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog named Roadrunner was spotted on camera escaping a coyote in an incident that’s happening more than ever before, according to the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The shelter’s veterinarians got a call from neighbors in Vista last month. One of the residents saw a small dog repeatedly on the run from coyotes in the Creekside and Brengle Terrace areas. Neighbors kept in touch through NextDoor as many of them tried to lure the dog to safety. Babs Fry, whose nonprofit “A Way Home For Animals” helps rescue pets, was able to save Roadrunner. She brought the dog to the Helen Woodward Animal Center for a free checkup. “We were concerned that Roadrunner may have been bitten and would require Rabies shots and months of downtime, but he was one of the lucky ones who managed to escape without incident,” said Animal Health Supervisor Madison Hughes. Roadrunner was treated for malnourishment, and skin and flea issues, shelter officials said. Fry took him home for a full recovery and will start interviewing potential adopters next week. Roadrunner’s story is increasingly common, according to Helen Woodward Animal Center officials. The shelter has received more reports of coyote attacks and the deaths of pets than ever before. The increase in coyote encounters may be due to last year’s fires, seasonal drought, heat, and recent housing development, shelter officials said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three people suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds this morning in the Mount Hope Community of San Diego, a police officer said.A group of people were in the area of Market and Denby streets about 1:45 a.m. when several gunshots were heard and three people were shot, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.A 39-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, a 32-year-old man was shot multiple times in the buttocks and legs and a 30-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his lips, Heims said.All three men were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds and police had no suspect information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 14-year-old girl is the first child to die from influenza this season in San Diego.The girl, who died on Feb. 12, had an underlying health condition, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. She had contracted influenza A, also known as H1N1, the county says, and had not received this season's flu vaccine.“Pediatric influenza deaths are very unfortunate. Our condolences go out to the family,” said Wilma Wooten, County public health officer. “It is extremely important that people get vaccinated because influenza can be deadly.”The teen is one of five flu deaths reported last week, bringing the county's death toll this season to 35 people. The other deaths last week were four men —ages 82, 73, 62 and 56 — and all had underlying medical conditions. Only the 82-year-old and the 56-year-old had been vaccinated, the county says.At this time last season, there had been 268 deaths.“Influenza continues to be widespread. If you have not gotten a flu shot, do it now,” Wooten added.Last week, 539 lab-confirmed cases of influenza were reported, compares to 476 at the same time last season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A brazen package theft — and attempt to stop it — was caught on surveillance video at a Pacific Beach home.Penny Ryan wasn't home when the scene on her porch unfolded, but it was all captured on her doorbell camera. A man walked up to the residence with a small green skateboard and bag before he lays down the board and walks up onto the porch. The man then begins stuffing his bag with packages left on the doorstep.But before he gets away, a concerned nearby resident comes across the man as he's leaving and tells him to put the bag down multiple times.MAP: Track crime in San Diego County neighborhoodsThe thief appears to be willing to put the bag down, telling the resident, "I'll put it down, sir. Sir, I'll put it down." But instead, the man runs away.Ryan said the incident highlights a rise in crime within Pacific Beach, and residents are worried. A look at CrimeMapping.com shows there have been about 30 thefts and burglaries in the Pacific Beach area in the past six months."It has escalated so much in the last 3 years that we are all quite worried about how bad it’s going to get," Ryan said.
