(KGTV) -- A man in his mid-30s was killed Sunday afternoon after the SUV he was driving struck a tree in El Cajon.El Cajon police say the driver of a 1998 Ford Explorer drifted onto a center divider then slammed into the tree on N Second Street near Greenfield Drive at 1:49 p.m.The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending family notification.Surveillance video from a nearby store shows the impact of the crash and the aftermath. Several good Samaritans ran over to try to help the driver until police arrived.N Second Street between Persimmon Avenue and Greenfield Drive was closed off for approximately four hours as police investigated.Police said it was unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- An El Cajon police officer responding to a traffic-related call was hospitalized Monday morning after being dragged by an SUV and then struck by another vehicle. Police have identified the suspect as 41-year-old David Francis Cepeda Pangilinan. He is a 5'6" Guamanian male with short brown hair and brown eyes. El Cajon police said officers were called to the 100 block of Washington Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. in response to a vehicle blocking the street with the driver “asleep or unresponsive behind the wheel.”Officers arrived to find the driver and a female passenger asleep inside a black 2019 Volkswagen SUV with California license plate 8LCE117.According to El Cajon police: “When officers woke the occupants, the driver provided identification for someone other than himself and officers began to investigate.During this contact, the driver suddenly started the vehicle and began to put it into gear. One of the officers attempted to detain the driver and keep him from fleeing the scene.In doing so, the officer was trapped in the vehicle and dragged for a distance as the driver fled.As the driver fled with the officer still partially inside the vehicle, the officer was struck by another vehicle that was traveling in the roadway.The officer was ejected from the vehicle and sustained significant injuries.”According to police, the injured officer was taken to the hospital and is in critical but stable condition. No other injuries were reported.A neighbor was doing yard work when the incident happened and watched it unfold."I heard my son scream and crying so I turn around and I see officer down. I run to the officer but the other police man came. The guy was out, completely out. Blood was coming out of his nose, his mouth and his head. And his eyes were rolled in the back of his head. The other officer came and put his hand on his head. I start praying for the guy, the next thing we know we see him move. EL CAJON (CNS) - A man who drove drunk and at high speed down a curving Campo roadway, causing a crash that killed his two passengers, was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder and other charges.Ryan Renz, 26, faces up to 30 years to life behind bars when he is sentenced Dec. 20 for the Jan. 25, 2017, crash that killed his friends, 23-year- old Johnny Ray Meyer Jr. and 26-year-old Dillon Cody Wiltfong.Prosecutors said Renz -- who was on probation and driving on a suspended license due to a prior DUI conviction -- was drunk when he crashed Wiltfong's Volkswagen Jetta into a tree on Buckman Springs Road, near Lake Morena Drive, in the evening hours of Jan. 25.RELATED: Campo crash leaves two dead, driver facing chargesOne of the victims was ejected and the other was trapped inside the vehicle. Renz suffered minor injuries.Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans said Renz and the victims drank throughout the afternoon of Jan. 25 before the defendant got behind the wheel and drove somewhere between 85 to 96 mph down Buckman Springs Road, then crashed the Jetta into an oak tree. The passenger's side of the sedan -- where both Meyer and Wiltfong were sitting -- took the brunt of the crash, according to the prosecutor.Evans said the high speed of the Jetta caught the attention of Border Patrol officers stationed near the scene, some of whom pursued the sedan, but were unable to stop it before the crash. Officers arrived to a "very violent scene," in which the Jetta was found overturned and on fire, Evans said.Mechanical issues were ruled out as a potential cause of the crash by California Highway Patrol investigators, according to the prosecutor. 1677
