SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Testimony wrapped up Wednesday in the murder trial of two men accused in the stabbing death of a Chula Vista music producer whose body was found in a drum floating in San Diego Bay.Timothy John Cook, 54, is charged with the Sept. 30, 2017, murder of his housemate Omar Medina, 28. Co-defendant Derrick Spurgeon, 40, is charged with being an accessory for allegedly driving the boat used to dump the victim's body, which was found 12 days later inside the 55-gallon barrel, which had been weighed down by a makeshift anchor made of wire and cinderblocks.Medical examiners said Medina had been stabbed more than 60 times in the chest, back, neck and head.RELATED: Man whose body was found in a barrel had been stabbed 66 timesAttorneys will make closing arguments Monday morning at the downtown San Diego courthouse.Deputy District Attorney Cherie Somerville told jurors that Medina and Cook both worked at a scaffolding business for Cook's younger brother and were living together at a home in Chula Vista.In a text exchange with his brother, Cook expressed annoyance with Medina over his drinking and sloppy household behavior, leading Cook to eventually kick him out of the house, according to the prosecutor.RELATED: Opening statements made in murder trial involving body found in barrelSommerville also noted in her opening statement that Medina had recently come into a substantial amount of money via an ,000 settlement he received in a lawsuit.Medina's family never heard from him after Sept. 30, and filed a missing person's report soon afterward with Chula Vista police. Medina's unlocked car was found about a week later on Oaklawn Avenue, not far from the home he shared with Cook on McIntosh Street. Somerville alleged that a barrel matching the one containing Medina's body can be seen in the bed of the pickup in the footage.She also said a search of the McIntosh Street home yielded additional indications that Cook was covering up the murder, such as removal of his home's kitchen sink and stripping down Medina's room, which was located in an attached building on the property.Oien said Cook was merely fixing up the home, and that he had an agreement with his landlord to make occasional repairs in exchange for lower rent.Spurgeon's attorney, Roland Haddad, said there was no evidence that his client had any knowledge that he was assisting Cook in disposing a body, if Cook even committed the murder at all. The men exchanged phone calls on Oct. 11, but Haddad said there was no evidence regarding what discussions they had over the phone, nor what was said on the alleged boat ride when Medina's body was dumped into the water. 4095

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Southwestern College President and Superintendent Kindred Murillo will retire at the end of this academic year after serving 24 years in the California Community College System, the college confirmed Wednesday.Beginning as an adjunct faculty member at Desert Community College District, Murillo has served in various roles. She spent 11 years as a chief business official and served her last nine years in the system as a college president, first at Lake Tahoe Community College District, and then at Southwestern College for more than four years."It is the commitment faculty, classified professionals and administrators have had to the success and achievement of our students that has made my career so rewarding," Murillo said. "Southwestern College has been the most remarkable community college I have had the privilege of serving during my entire academic career. We have worked together to establish a path of transformation for our students and our community."Murillo guided the college's accreditation status from warning to reaffirmation within her first year. According to a college statement, she also tackled a backlog of personnel investigations and complaints, increasing accountability at the district.Early in her tenure, she formed an Advisory Task Force on Inclusion & Race Relations that was intended to acknowledge a history of racism and inequity by design and to "develop transformative interventions designed to strengthen, enhance and support culture change," a college document said.Governing Board President Nora Vargas credits Murillo's commitment for positioning Southwestern College as a model of equity in the California Community College System."Murillo's transformative changes would have taken any other leader a decade to accomplish," Vargas said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The entire passenger and freight rail line between Oceanside and San Diego will be closed at midnight and remain shut down all weekend for improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.Crews will shut down the lines just after midnight Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to SANDAG, which will make several improvements, including work on the Mid-Coast Trolley project, extending the UC San Diego blue line trolley from the Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north toward UC San Diego.Four rail services use the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo coastal rail corridor: North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and the BNSF freight line.Passengers using the Coaster train line are advised to use the BREEZE Route 101 or local buses. Amtrak will offer bus connections from Oceanside to San Diego for passengers with reservations.Crews working on the Mid-Coast Trolley project will remove temporary support structures, build retaining walls, protect slopes and install fencing and cable railing, as well as sewer, water, and drainage pipes.The entire project is expected to be completed late next year.Near the San Diego River Bridge, crews will add nearly a mile of double track across the river to create a continuous 7-mile stretch of double track in the southernmost portion of the coastal rail corridor.During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent noise and lights.Passenger rail service is scheduled to resume for the Monday morning commute. 1569

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for a man suspected of carjacking another man on a Bay Terraces street.The victim was sitting in his 2018 Kia Forte around 9:55 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Manzana Way, near the Hillsborough Recreation Center, when a white van pulled up alongside him, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man got out of the van and told him he wanted the car, then the victim -- assuming the man had a weapon -- got out of his car, Buttle said.Another person driving the van sped away, followed by the thief in the victim's Kia, which had California license plate 8BCW102, the officer said.
