ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Hundreds of people attended a carnival hosted by a celebrity chef on Monday to raise money for an Escondido restaurant owner nearly killed in a hit-and-run last December. Kaitlyn "Rosie" Pilsbury was riding her motorcycle when she was hit head-on by the driver of an SUV. The driver ditched the vehicle and took off. It happened in Vista just days before Christmas. Pilsbury suffered massive injuries and was in a coma for 12 days. "When I heard this happened my first call was to the network, my second call was to the mayor, and my third was to all these people, this is a 'Restaurant: Impossible' family in a community that cares about that young girl," said celebrity chef Robert Irvine of the Food Network. "She looks way better than she did four days ago. And today, she looks way better than she did yesterday." Pilsbury's mom flew in from New Jersey the moment she heard about the accident. Marie Pilsbury said the support is overwhelming. "She is, I believe, a miracle, in my opinion. I'm sorry, all the prayer and all the love I know that she felt it and I know that it made a difference," Pilsbury said tearfully. Her daughter is scheduled to be released from a rehab center on Tuesday. "She is so positive and so thrilled and so thankful for everything," said Pilsbury. Irvine told 10News' Rachel Bianco that the event helped raise nearly 0,000 that will go towards Kaitlyn Pilsbury's medical bills. 1807

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Supporters of Newland Sierra, a large housing development north of Escondido, launched their effort to rally voter support Friday at a press conference outside the Registrar of Voters. The project would build 2,135 homes on unincorporated land next to I-15 along Deer Springs Road. The design includes amenitites such as new parks and hiking trails, while touting that it preserves 60% of the land as open space. Newland also points out green innovations, such as solar panels on every home and electric car plug-ins in every garage. Most importantly, supporters say the homes are desperately needed to support families in North County.Opponents say the massive development would change the rural character of the area. They argue that traffic would be unbearable along Deer Springs Road and that evacuating during a wildfire would be dangerously slow. Newland counters that it will expand Deer Springs Road and that it includes a state-of-the-art fire plan. "We'll still have our country feeling, but it's nice to have a safer road," said Corrie Lott, a neighbor who supports the porject.Opposition is led by the neighboring Golden Door resort. "The developer stands to make more than a billion dollars, and the vast majority of homes will require a six figure salary to afford," said a spokesperson in a statement to 10News. 1360

Federal prosecutors have filed hate crime charges against a Pennsylvania man who authorities say stormed a Pittsburgh synagogue and opened fire, killing 11 people.Robert Bowers, 46, of suburban Baldwin, surrendered to authorities after Saturday morning's shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue. It's believed he made anti-Semitic statements during the shooting and targeted Jews in posts on social media that are a focus of the investigation, according to a federal law enforcement official.Bowers faces 29 charges in all in a rampage that left the historic Jewish neighborhood of Squirrel Hill, and the rest of the nation stunned. The attack was believed to be the deadliest on the Jewish community in US history, the Anti-Defamation League said in a statement."These incidents usually occur in other cities," Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich told reporters Saturday afternoon. "Today, the nightmare has hit home in the city of Pittsburgh."Bowers is charged with 11 counts of using a firearm to commit murder and multiple counts of two hate crimes: obstruction of exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death and obstruction of exercise of religious beliefs resulting in bodi

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai. The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain. The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters. The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight. The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. ESCONDIDO, Calif., (KGTV)-- Residents in Escondido shared their concerns Wednesday about the flooding on Country Club Drive.Neighbors said after every rain event, the street floods and closes, which creates not only an inconvenience but a safety hazard. There is no stop sign on Country Club Drive. But Jason Farr is at a stand-still. "I can't get in and out of our neighborhood," Farr said. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsFarr and his family moved into the neighborhood a few months ago. They have already experienced the notorious flooding. Farr's concern is that Country Club Drive is the only way in and out of his community."If emergency crews need to get here… If there are a couple of feet of water on top of the bridge, that's one thing, but if there's more like I saw yesterday, they just won't be able to get in and out," Farr said. He said he has several elderly neighbors who no longer have the strength or speed to evacuate at once. The flooding also trap his children from getting to school. "We have to be constantly be deciding if we want to bring our kids to school. Because I do not feel comfortable dropping my kids off to school and them not being able to be picked up," Farr said. While the water receded overnight, by 8:30 AM Wednesday the water crested back over the road. Farr said his neighbors told him that the severity of the problem got much worse as new developments sprouted into the once lonely neighborhood. RELATED: San Diego storm brings rain, snow, flooding“It's changing the watershed, changing the drainage. All the drainage is being funneled down hill,” Farr said. “We’re just the end of the hill, and we're paying the price for it."Farr said while this is a flooding issue now, come summer, this one way in, one way out street to his community will become a fire hazard. He has voiced his concerns to the county. So far, he has not received a response. 1910
