CHICAGO, Ill. – For the first time, researchers say there’s a real connection between people not getting enough sleep and them craving calorie-packed junk food. For graduate student Daria Porter, sleep is often in short supply.“To function, I drink coffee and then during the day, I'll drink tea,” said Porter. But not getting enough rest can also lead her to making unhealthy choices.“Sometimes we'll run down here and grab a sweet snack if we're really struggling all of us,” Porter said. We all crave junk food from time to time, but now scientists say they might know more about how your nose plays an important role in why you reach for that doughnut when you’re tired. “So, the sense of smell helps us to decide what to eat and what not to eat,” said Thorsten Kahnt, an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.Kahnt just completed research looking what happens in the brain when study participants got a normal night’s sleep, versus just four hours, and how that affected their food choices.“So, when people are sleep deprived, they changed the type of food that they ate,” said Kahnt. The research indicated that when tired, the brain goes into hyperdrive – causing an enhanced response to high fat, calorie dense foods.“So, they ate food like donuts or chocolate chips that are richer in calories,” said Kahnt. In addition, scientists scanned people’s neurological responses to food and non-food odors when they were sleep deprived versus being well-rested.“The part of the brain that responds or processes food or odors in general,” said Kahnt. “That has a stronger response to food and non-food odors when you're sleep deprived.”The research provides new insights into the biological connection between sleep habits and weight gain. And how understanding that connection can help thwart making bad choices.Researchers say the best bet is to put that snack down and instead hit the sack. Eleven people have died so far in 2019 while climbing Mount Everest, a behemoth of a mountain that towers 29, 029 feet above sea level. This is more than twice the number of people who died climbing Everest in 2018, which saw only five deaths that season.But it's not the number of deaths that some may find shocking — it's the reasons behind them. Only two of this season's Mount Everest deaths can be attributed to falls.So what's killing climbers ascending the mountain? It's primarily exhaustion and altitude sickness, and something called "the death zone."Seasoned climbers call any part of the mountain above 26,000 feet "the death zone" because there is only so long a human can survive at that elevation due to lack of oxygen. "Even when using bottled oxygen, supplemental oxygen, there's only a very few number of hours that we can actually survive up there before our bodies start to shut down," mountain guide Adrian Ballinger told CNN. And, unfortunately, the wait at the summit of Mount Everest plays a role in these deaths because the longer someone is at that altitude, the more severe they feel the effects from lack of oxygen and exhaustion. During the week beginning May 20, crowds of climbers became stuck in a queue to the summit. When this happens, climbers aren't eating, drinking or sleeping and continue to use up vital oxygen, which can lead to death.British climber Robin Haynes Fisher was one of those who had warned of the dangers of overcrowding."With a single route to the summit, delays caused by overcrowding could prove fatal so I am hopeful my decision to go for the 25th will mean fewer people. From least to most severe, they are: acute mountain sickness, high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The symptoms for all three types are similar (headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath), but HAPE is accompanied by a buildup of fluid in the lungs and HACE, the most severe type of altitude sickness, occurs when there's a buildup of fluid in the brain.So how can climbers avoid the same deadly fate as the 11 who died? Simply put — be careful. CHICAGO — From May to October, a team of people is working every day, even weekends, to look for dead birds on the ground in downtown Chicago.Annually, about 5,000 birds that are not native to the region are injured or killed after colliding into Chicago’s glassy reflective skyscrapers. The team looking for the birds is documenting what kind are coming though the city.The birds live in rain forests and wild areas and are not experienced with tall buildings, group members say. It’s a foreign environment for them, so they are easily hurt, says group member Annette Prince.The group aims to decrease the number of birds killed in the city and is pushing for more bird-friendly building designs throughout the nation. One suggestion the team has is to turn lights out at night.“We are No. 1 in the urban lighting we put out,” Prince said. Less glass helps with the problem, too.“It’s estimated that there are a billion birds a year killed in windows, with a huge concentrations in cities like Chicago,” she said.This is something the U.S. can fix, Prince said.“There are things you can do to make buildings safe, and to protect these birds that are so valuable to us,” she said. 1192
