WASHINGTON (AP) — Dozens of email accounts at the Treasury Department were compromised in the massive breach of U.S. government agencies being blamed on Russia. That's according to an Oregon Democrat, Sen. Ron Wyden, who says hackers broke into systems used by the department’s highest-ranking officials. Wyden issued a statement Monday after he and other members of the Senate Finance Committee were briefed by the IRS and the Treasury Department. Wyden says that though there is no indication that taxpayer data was compromised, the hack “appears to be significant." In addition, the breach appears to involve the theft of encryption keys from U.S. government servers, Wyden said.“Treasury still does not know all of the actions taken by hackers, or precisely what information was stolen,” Wyden said in a statement.It is also not clear what Russian hackers intend to do with any emails they may have accessed.A Treasury Department spokeswoman declined to comment on Wyden’s statement.Treasury was among the earliest known agencies reported to have been affected in a breach that now encompasses a broad spectrum of departments. The effects and consequences of the hack are still being assessed, though the Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity arm said in a statement last week that the intrusion posed a “grave” risk to government and private networks.In the Treasury Department’s case, Wyden said, the breach began in July. VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — The man accused of killing his girlfriend in Cardiff pleaded not guilty Wednesday at his arraignment.Henry Cowen, 41, stood stoically inside the defendant's box, watching Deputy District Attorney Marnie Layon accuse him of murdering 43-year-old Sabrina Lukosky. Friends at the courthouse said Lukosky was a beloved butterfly breeder, who was "so lovely."The investigation began when Lukosky's mother requested a welfare check in early October, after not hearing from her daughter for several days. Officers came to the gray flat the couple shared on Cowen's mother's property in Cardiff. They saw Lukosky's car but noticed a foul smell coming from the residence. A few days later, they executed a search warrant and found Lukosky's dead body and signs of a violent struggle inside the bedroom. "There was a broken stick, a bottle that had been broken, some amount of blood, and the victim had a 1.5-inch vertical gash to her forehead," Layon said. But that was not what killed her. The Medical Examiner said Lukosky died of strangulation and blunt force trauma. Prosecutors believe Cowen then left North County, first to got to Los Angeles. Then they said he took a Lyft to Riverside County, where he met with his children's mother. Investigators believe it was then that Cowen took steps to escape the country."That woman and her father, at his request, took him to the Israeli Consulate there, so that he could make arrangements to obtain a visa to get out of the country to move to Israel," Layon said. "They learned when they were going through the process, that would take six to eight months, and an expression was then made that the preference would be to go to New York."But before he could leave, officers with the Fugitive Task Force arrested Cowen in Riverside County on Oct. 11. He remains in custody with no bail.Cowen has an extensive violent criminal record, including assaulting an ex-girlfriend in California and kidnapping and torturing a man in Washington State. WASHINGTON — The Senate intelligence committee has concluded the Kremlin launched an aggressive effort to interfere in the 2016 presidential contest on behalf of Donald Trump and says the Trump campaign’s interactions with Russian intelligence services during the campaign posed a “grave” counterintelligence threat. It says Trump associates were eager to exploit the Kremlin’s aid, particularly by maximizing the impact of the disclosure of Democratic emails that were hacked by Russian military intelligence officers.The report from the Republican-led panel lays out significant contacts between Trump associates and Russians, describing for instance a close professional relationship between Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Konstantin Kilimnik, whom the committee describes without equivocation as a Russian intelligence officer."The Committee found that Manafort's presence on the Campaign and proximity to Trump created opportunities for Russian intelligence services to exert influence over, and acquire confidential information on, the Trump campaign," according to the report released Tuesday.The report notes how Manafort shared internal Trump campaign polling data with Kilimnik and says there is “some evidence” that Kilimnik may have been connected to the Kremlin’s operation to hack and leak Democratic emails, though it does not describe that evidence. Virginia Beach Police are investigating a shooting that seriously injured two people early Sunday morning.Officers were alerted to multiple shots fired in the area around 12:45 a.m. A woman was located and suffering from a life-threatening wound. Medics treated the woman and took her to the hospital.A few minutes later at 12:48 a.m., officers received word that a victim with life-threatening injuries was located in several blocks away. EMS treated and took the victim to the hospital for further treatment.A possible suspect has been detained and the investigation is ongoing.Prior to this shooting, police responded to another shooting at the 1900 block of the Boardwalk. A woman suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident.There is an increased police presence throughout the oceanfront area due to College Beach Weekend. Problems with violence in past years have caused some to be critical of the event.
