SEOUL, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) issued a joint communique here Monday, vowing to cement bilateral relations.     The two countries pledged to broaden and enhance cooperation, and intensify coordination on regional and international issues so as to achieve long-term common development while contributing to world peace and prosperity, according to the joint communique issued during President Hu Jintao's state visit to the ROK.     The two sides agreed to promote the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries in a comprehensive way.     The two heads of state expressed their satisfaction over the development of bilateral ties in various fields including politics, economy and culture since China and the ROK established diplomatic relations in 1992. Hu Jintao arrived in Seoul on Monday for a two-day state visit to ROKOn the Taiwan issue, the ROK reiterated its adherence to the one-China policy.     The ROK pledged to further develop ties with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) through reconciliation and cooperation, while the Chinese side reaffirmed its support for the reconciliation process between the ROK and the DPRK and their final peaceful reunification.     China and the ROK will maintain frequent exchange of high-level visits and contacts, the communique said.     Diplomatic bodies of the two countries will hold advanced strategic dialogues this year, as the start-up of a strategic dialogue mechanism of exchanging views on important issues concerning bilateral common interests.     Besides, foreign ministries of the two countries will establish a mechanism of coordination in a bid to further exchanges on foreign policy and international situation, the communique said.     Experts from the two countries will launch joint research on promoting all-round bilateral exchanges and cooperation, and hand in their reports to the two governments.     In addition, senior officials from the defense bodies of the two countries will also increase contact and strengthen exchanges and cooperation on multiple levels.     On economic and trade cooperation, the two countries vow to intensify cooperation in trade and investment, inspection and quarantine, trade relief and intellectual property rights, in an effort to bring forward the target of annual bilateral trade worth200 billion U.S. dollars to 2010.     Meanwhile, the two countries will facilitate the adjustment and supplementation of the Medium and Long Term Development Vision for China-ROK Economic and Trade Cooperation.     The two nations are willing to work together to further expand bilateral economic and trade cooperation, the communique said.     In addition, cooperation in fields such as environment, information and communication, logistics and energy will also be pushed forward. He last visited the country in November 2005.

BEIJING, July 7 -- Chinese state-owned banks, including Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, intend to boost the contribution of the credit card business to their profits as they tap the rising demand to use plastic to pay for purchases.     ICBC, the country's biggest lender, expects to boost its credit cards in circulation to 50 million at the end of 2009 from 33 million now, Li Weiping, president of the Beijing-based bank's card center, told Shanghai Daily on Saturday in Shanghai. The credit card business accounts for about 10 percent of the bank's intermediary business, or fee-based income, and is one of the main contributors.     Chinese banks are shifting from its traditional deposit-lending business as they expand their profit avenues.     ''We expect the contribution (of credit cards to profit) to grow by 2 to 3 percentage points annually,'' Li said.     ICBC is among the country's "big four" state-owned banks to speed up the credit card business while their smaller joint stock rivals have already an edge in the market.     China Merchants Bank, the sixth biggest lender on the Chinese mainland, has one-third share of the credit card market. Other state-owned banks, including Agricultural Bank of China, said they are seeking growth as they pursue prudent risk control.     China Construction Bank expects to break even on its credit card business next year, said Wu Huitao, deputy general manager of the bank's credit card center. CCB targets card numbers at 20 million at the end of this year, from 16 million now, Wu said.     Credit cards will be the most important consumer credit product after mortgages, with profit forecast to reach US.6 billion by 2013, accounting for 22 percent of total consumer credit profits, said New York-based McKinsey & Co.

XIANYANG, Shaanxi, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao has written to the Tibet Nationalities Institute (TNI) to celebrate its 50th founding anniversary, which was the first institution of higher learning for ethnic Tibetans set up by the Central Government outside Tibet Autonomous Region.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, hailed the institute's "important contribution to the economic development and social progress" of Tibet, which has turned a great number of ethnic Tibetans into high-quality cadres and specialists.     Hu expressed the hope that the TNI would continuously improve its managerial level in teaching, play a better role as the training base for Tibetan cadres, and make greater contributions to improving the life of people of different ethnic groups in Tibet and promoting stability and unity in the region.     A ceremony was held on Sunday at the TNI in Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, northwest China. BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin is urging to cultivate more farmers who not only plant but also know the ABCs of technology and management, since the country is seeking new ways to promote rural development.     "We should foster many more 'new-style' farmers who are educated and who know techniques and the basics of sales and management," said Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, adding that rural areas should use urban development as a catalyst. BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of China's top political advisory body met on Tuesday to call for ideas on rural development and reform.     The Standing Committee of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee will hold its third meeting in mid October. Its major topic is rural development and reform, according to a statement issued after a meeting of CPPCC National Committee chairman and vice chairpersons presided over by Chairman Jia Qinglin.     Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) members will meet from Oct. 9 to 12 in Beijing to discuss major issues about promoting reform and development in the rural areas at the third Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee.     Political advisors are expected to discuss the guidelines reached at the Party session, the statement said. "We shall present research findings our political advisors made about rural development and try our best to put forward as many good proposals as possible to the Party."     At Tuesday's meeting, Jia called on political advisors to take an active part in a nationwide campaign to learn and implement the Scientific Outlook on Development.     The campaign aims to push Party members, especially leading Party members and government officials, to learn how to implement the Scientific Outlook on Development and carry it out effectively.     Political advisors should think about how to implement it in the CPPCC's work to improve its supervision on the ruling Party and participation in state affairs, Jia said.
