CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Coronado officials say lifeguards received multiple reports of shark sightings this week, prompting warning signs to be posted for visitors.The city said four shark sightings were reported between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, and the sharks ranged in size from 6 to 10 feet long. One of the sharks was seen by a lifeguard who was on a personal watercraft.The sharks were reportedly within 40 yards of the South Beach area shoreline.The city has posted signs warning beachgoers who visit the area.Naval Base Coronado also posted on Facebook on Friday that shark activity was reported in the Breakers Beach area, and closed water activities until further notice.Just one month ago, a 12-foot great white shark was seen off Coronado's North Beach area by a lifeguard paddleboarding about 100 yards from shore, prompting a 24-hour warning to beachgoers but no water closures. 910

Congress has a rare opportunity Wednesday to consider whether tech giants should be broken up due to antitrust concerns.The CEOs of Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook are testifying remotely in a House Judiciary Committee Hearing starting at noon on Wednesday.Facebook internal company documents are being deployed against CEO Mark Zuckerberg by lawmakers asserting that the company has gobbled up rivals to squelch competition.Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the Democrat who heads the House Judiciary Committee, told Zuckerberg at a hearing Wednesday that documents obtained from the company “tell a very disturbing story” of Facebook’s acquisition of the Instagram messaging service.He said the documents show Zuckerberg called Instagram a threat that could “meaningfully hurt” Facebook.Zuckerberg responded that Facebook viewed Instagram as both a competitor and a “complement” to Facebook’s services, but also acknowledged that it competed with Facebook on photo-sharing. Some critics of Facebook have called for the company to divest Instagram and its WhatsAPP messaging service.During his questioning with Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos couldn't guarantee that his company isn't accessing seller data to make competing products.“We have a policy against using seller specific data to aid our private label business,” said Bezos.“But I can’t guarantee to you that that policy hasn’t been violated.”With the hearing underway, it's hard to tell who is the most powerful person in the room."Google controls nearly all of the internet search in the United States," Rep. David Cicilline, D-Rhode Island, said. "Amazon controls nearly half of all online commerce in the United States. Facebook has approximately 2.7 billion monthly active users across its platforms, and finally, Apple is under increasing scrutiny for abusing its role as both a player and a referee in the App Store."A year-long congressional investigation is looking for ways to check that power in what experts say will require a new understanding of U.S. competition law."(The) major point of these hearings is to move away from a conception of competition law as focusing on the well-being of citizens, as purchasers of goods and services, and to adopt a broader conception that looks at the citizen as an employee — as a resident of a community, as a consumer of news," Willam Kovacic, the former chairman of the Federal Trade Commission said.The four companies have all denied anti-competitive behavior. Last week, Apple even commissioned a study that found its App Store commission rates were in line with other companies.Several large tech companies have voiced concerns that congressional regulation might make them less competitive globally."I worry that if you regulate for the sake of regulating it, it has a lot of unintended consequences," said Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google's parent company, Alphabet. "If you take a technology like artificial intelligence, it will have implications for national security and other important areas of society."Even as the COVID-19 pandemic has made tech companies more essential and more valuable, they have been facing a growing backlash. Protests have taken place across the country over safety concerns at Amazon warehouses, and advertisers have been boycotting Facebook over the site's failure to properly police hate speech."I think they come into the hearing not with a halo, but with great concerns about exactly whose side they are on. And that should be a matter of concern," Kovacic said. "Again, you look at the mood of Congress. You look at how Republicans join Democrats today in scolding these companies. That's a combustible environment for the leading enterprises."The House investigation is expected to lead to a recommendation for new legislation, perhaps bringing along with it greater scrutiny of tech acquisitions — like Facebook's purchase of WhatsApp and Instagram, and Google's purchase of YouTube and Fitbit. CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — A woman was attacked by an alligator on Wednesday while she was swimming in a lake in Citrus County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.The FWC says 24-year-old Felicitie Marie Gillette was swimming in Lake Hernando around 1 a.m. when an alligator grabbed her by the left arm and began to drag her underwater. She was reportedly able to fight off the alligator and call 911 for help. Gillette was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital for treatment of her injuries. According to the FWC, she was treated and released. She sustained non-life threatening injuries.The alligator is believed to 5 to 6-feet long.The FWC and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office are working to catch the alligator. A trapper has also been called to the scene.The public beach access to Lake Hernando is closed while a wildlife trapper searches for the alligator.  923

  

City of San Diego workers on the taxpayer dime were doubling the hours worked on their timecards and getting paid for it anyway. The revelation is part of a damaging new audit set to be released Friday. "Quite frankly, we're appalled," Johnnie Perkins, a city deputy chief operating officer, said in a press conference called Thursday. The audit found the a unit of 17 workers in a unit of public utilities department were working an average 3.6 hours per day, but putting eight hours on their timecards - and supervisors were approving them. The unit is charged with replacing faulty cement water meter covers and water meter boxes at homes and business across the city of San Diego. "We need to make sure that we're changing what our expectations are not just for those that are on the front line repairing our lids and boxes," Perkins said, "but for our midlevel and senior managers, what do we expect in terms of how they are going to be evaluated or held accountable for their performance, or in this case, lack thereof?"The investigation comes just months after City Auditor Eduardo Luna's department found that the public utilities department sent erroneously high water bills to nearly 3,000 San Diego families. Perkins said reforms are currently being installed. The announcement came one day after city public utilities director Vic Bianes announced his retirement, effective Thursday. Matt Vespi, an assistant director in the finance department, takes over on an interim basis.The city plans to have a permanent replacement by the end of the year.   In a statement, Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the public utilities department needs to earn back the trust of its customers."The Mayor has called for sweeping reforms that include looking into every aspect of the department’s operations and changing how things are done to better serve the public," he said. In the case of the inflated timecards, Perkins declined to say how much was lost, what the workers earned, and exactly how long it was going on. He promised taxpayers that despite the troubles, the water supply is safe, and that the city would get to the bottom of it. "We own this," he said. "If there's an issue we're going to own it, and we're going to be held accountable because it's the ratepayers and the taxpayers of San Diego who we work for, and we cannot forget that."  2439

  

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The national “If You Give a Child a Book …” campaign will distribute over 165,000 books to kids in low-income households across the country this school year after raising 5,369 during its annual fundraiser this fall.The childhood literacy campaign is led by the Scripps Howard Foundation and supported by employees of The E.W. Scripps Company, members of the Scripps family and communities where Scripps does business in more than 40 markets across the country. The campaign helps Scripps fulfill its vision of creating a better-informed world.Beginning January 2021, each Scripps TV station and national brand will partner with schools and nonprofits in their communities to ensure the books go to children who need them most, whether they are learning in a traditional classroom setting, remotely or a hybrid of the two.Since the campaign’s first year in 2016, more than 352,000 new books have been donated to children facing poverty in communities served by Scripps businesses. With the additional funds raised through this year’s campaign, the total number of distributed books will surpass 500,000.The first ,000 raised during the campaign was matched through a generous gift from The Kroger Co. Foundation.
