HAVANA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Cuban medical authorities have launched the sales of the world's first therapeutic vaccine against lung cancer, local officials said on Tuesday.The CimaVax-EGF vaccine, as a result of a 25-year research into diseases related to tobacco smoking, has been developed by researchers and scientists at the Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) in Havana.The active drug ingredient in the vaccine is based on "a protein we all have when cancer is uncontrolled." "The epidermal growth factor is related to all cell proliferation," said Gisela Gonzalez, head researcher of the project."The drug could turn the cancer into a manageable, chronic disease by generating antibodies against the proteins which triggered the uncontrolled cell proliferation," she said.The immunogenic vaccine is appropriate to patients with advanced lung cancer in stages of three and four, showing no positive response to other kinds of treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the expert said."It is not possible to prevent the disease but this vaccine improves significantly the status of the critically ill patients," she added.She said the CimaVax-EGF has gone through clinical studies and trials in over 1,000 patients across the island and is currently distributed free of charge in all hospitals of the Caribbean island nation.Gonzalez also said researchers at the CIM planned to use the same principle of the CimaVax-EGF in treating other cancerous tumors such as prostate, uterus and breast cancers.Lung cancer is regarded as one of the world's most serious, common and deadly cancers and is most frequently found among tobacco smokers.According to the World Health Organization, the disease generally kills 5 million people a year, and the figure is expected to rise to as much as 8 million by 2030 unless smoking habits are changed.In Cuba, like many other developing countries across the world, smoking is seen as a status symbol. BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- No newly-formed oil belt was detected in the past two days in north China's Bohai Bay from ConocoPhillips' platforms in the Penglai 19-3 oilfield, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said.However, new spots of visible oil spills could still be found around platform C, the SOA said in a statement on Sunday.It is estimated that about 4.51 liters of oil leaked into the sea on Saturday, a slight drop from 6.56 liters from Thursday.No oil clean-up work was done on Friday and Saturday due to the strong winds and rough conditions at sea, the statement said.ConocoPhillips China, a subsidiary of U.S. energy giant ConocoPhillips, first reported spills to authorities in June. The oil spills have polluted more than 5,500 square km of sea water in the Bohai Bay since June.The oil spills have spread to beaches in Hebei and Liaoning provinces. The spills have been blamed for losses in the provinces' tourism and aquatic farming industries.The company on Aug. 31 submitted a report to the SOA claiming that it had screened out all potential sources for oil spills and blocked all oil leaks.After days of evaluation, however, the SOA said on Sept. 2 that ConocoPhillips had failed to complete the clean-up.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Online search engine Google Inc. has agreed to pay 500 million U.S. dollars to settle claims that it allowed online Canadian pharmacies to place advertisements targeting consumers in the United States, U.S. Justice Department announced Wednesday.The settlement, one of the largest ever in the United States, represents the gross revenue received by Google as a result of Canadian pharmacies advertising through Google's AdWords program, plus gross revenue made by Canadian pharmacies from their sales to U.S. consumers.The advertisements led to illegal imports of prescription drugs into the country, the Justice Department said.The shipment of prescription drugs from pharmacies outside the United States to customers in the United States typically violates the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and in the case of controlled prescription drugs, the Controlled Substances Act.Google was aware as early as 2003, that generally, it was illegal for pharmacies to ship controlled and non-controlled prescription drugs into the United States from Canada."The Department of Justice will continue to hold accountable companies who in their bid for profits violate federal law and put at risk the health and safety of American consumers," Deputy Attorney General James Cole said in a statement."This settlement ensures that Google will reform its improper advertising practices with regard to these pharmacies while paying one of the largest financial forfeiture penalties in history," he said.Google had previously set aside that amount for a possible settlement over its advertising practices, according to a regulatory filing in May.

MOSCOW, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- A state of emergency has been imposed in a district in the Krasnodar Region in south Russia amid an out break of the African swine fever, the regional emergencies center said on Sunday.The emergencies center told local reporters that the African swine fever virus (ASFV) was found in a private farm where 15 pigs died of the disease, but the source of the infection is still unclear.Local authorities said some 12,000 pigs in and around the Krylovskaya village, some three km away from the private farm, are being culled, 50 of which have already died of the ASFV in recent days.In April, the regional emergencies has temporarily declared a state of emergency in the Labinsky district in the region, as the ASFV was found at a livestock farm. 85 pigs were culled at the farm.
