SAN YSIDRO, Calif. -- A quick conversation with a customer is now a rare interaction for border town business owner Sunil Gakhreja.“There is no business. You’ve been in here for 20 minutes and no one’s come in, no one’s even crossed by in front of us,” said Gakhreja.The Department of Homeland Security banned all non-essential travel between the United States and Mexico because of COVID-19.For business owners in the small border town of San Ysidro, about 20 minutes south of San Diego, this closure is suffocating their livelihood.“When they close the border, economically, it affects us a lot. That’s our main bread and butter,” said Gakhreja.The San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce said 95% of the customers in the stores cross the border from Mexico into the U.S. to shop.The chamber reports now that border crossings are restricted—businesses are losing .8 million per day.Gakhreja is no exception. He was forced to lay off the entire staff at his perfume shop.“It’s only me and my wife working. That’s how we can survive.”The family’s entire livelihood hangs on the success of one strip mall on San Ysidro Boulevard. They just opened a pizza shop next door named for Gakhreja’s mother Maya.It’s a tribute he’s desperately trying to keep alive.“We put everything— our soul in there, our money, every single penny we have. I don’t want to let it go down, in any way,” he said.Sunil has been in the United States for more than two decades after immigrating from India.He said this city gave him the chance for a different life than he had growing up.“This country has given me everything,” said Gakhreja. “I am here because of this community. This border town has given me everything: the ability to buy my house, to run my business, I couldn’t be more blessed, but I don’t want to give up my hope. I want to hold on to that last breath that we have.”The San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce is handing out PPE to help small businesses hold on. Packages of hand sanitizer, masks, face shields and gloves will go out to any business that needs it.“Being safe, PPE, distancing ourselves, wearing our masks, that’s the way to protect ourselves,” said Jason Wells of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce. “Not being xenophobic and doing things like closing the border.”Gakrehja said this street on the border can’t wait too much longer.“You’re going to lose jobs, people will go into depression, this is our American dream,” he said.Gakrehja is just hoping lawmakers see one thing: in times of turmoil—keeping people apart can cause great pain.“We have to understand we are a great nation, but at this time we need other people’s help too,” he said.The border closure is extended until July 22, 2020. (KGTV) — Hundreds gathered in Santee on Saturday to call for justice for women of color.A flyer for the march advertised "promoting black and brown unity" and justice for Breonna Taylor and Vanessa Guillén.Breonna Taylor was an EMT who was shot and killed during a no-knock warrant against her boyfriend at her home in March. No drugs were found in her apartment.Vanessa Guillén was a 20-year-old Army specialist who disappeared in April from Fort Hood in Texas. Remains believed to be hers were found near the Army post in July, sparking protests over the military's handling of sexual harassment allegations.A section of Mission Gorge Rd. was blocked off by police for the planned protest. Counter-demonstrators also assembled in the area.One of the demonstration's organizers told ABC 10News that they hope their calls for racial justice are heard by Santee's City Council leaders."Santee has its things, it's known as being racist, and I'm here to change that. That's the goal," said Alana, one of the organizers with East County BIPOC, who adds that she is born and raised in Santee. "We tried to work with City Council and we tried to be a part of a diversity committee, and it was kind of just brushed under the rug. Nothing ever happened."The group is also calling for City Council to create a diversity committee led by people of color, for Santee Mayor John Minto to denounce the Defend East County Facebook group, and to meet with San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain Christina Bavencoff.One demonstrator told ABC 10News, "our message is that minorities can be safe here. I grew up here and there is racism but there's also perks to living in Santee. The community, when they accept you, can be good. But also for minorities, to feel comfortable and to expand all of our minds and to open up about Black Lives Matter as well."In regards to counter-protesters, the demonstrator added, "We're not here for them. SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) - Two people were critically injured in a car crash Sunday night after a driver sped through the Port of Entry. The crash happened around 10:15 p.m. on Dairy Mart Road near Interstate 5. According to police, a driver in a Chevrolet Silverado drove through the port of entry without stopping before crashing head-on into a Mitsubishi Lancer. One person was in the truck and another in the car at the time of the crash. Both were critically injured. The California Highway Patrol later confirmed to 10News that the driver of the truck is suspected of driving under the influence. 604

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco supervisors are set to approve new legislation to discourage racist 911 calls that they say expose people of color to dangerous run-ins with police.Supporters say people need to think twice before calling 911 on someone who is barbecuing, jogging or stenciling "Black Lives Matter" at a home.The legislation is called the Caution Against Racial and Exploitative Non-Emergencies Act, also known as the CAREN legislation. SANTEE, Calif. (CNS) - Authorities asked for the public's help in finding the driver of a minivan suspected of following a nine-year-old boy along a street in Santee and trying to entice him to get into the van.The boy told San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies he was walking alone on Trailridge Avenue, between Hightail Drive and Weston Road, about 5 p.m. Wednesday when the driver asked him to get into the van and go to a community pool with him. The boy refused and walked away and the driver left the area, according to Sgt. Joseph Jarjura.The driver was described as a white man, between 18-20 years old with short black hair, wearing a light-colored T-shirt, Jarjura said, adding a woman may have been in the passenger seat, but no description was available.The minivan was possibly a black Dodge Caravan with tinted windows and black rims.Anyone with information was asked to call the department at 858-565-5200. 938
