WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - In Ohio, a dad turned an awkward silence into a beautiful moment when he belted out the national anthem at a high school basketball game after the sound system failed.The moment captured on video took place before the Waverly Tigers were to take on the Portsmouth West Senators Friday night.According to CNN, the pregame rituals started as usual, with everyone standing before playing the national anthem, but then, silence.The sound system was experiencing technical difficulties.That's when Trenton Brown began to belt out "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the encouragement of his wife, with no musical backup or a microphone.After he was done singing, Brown sat down and started eating his popcorn, CNN reported.Johnny Futhey, another parent who was at the game, captured the moment and posted it on his Facebook page, where it quickly went viral.Futhey said the performance brought tears to people's eyes.Brown told CNN that he's been singing most of his life but has never performed the national anthem solo. 1042

It's a spinoff from his Band In A Bus program.“We believe it’s like giving away a box of joy,” said Rose.With more and more questions about what classes and extracurriculars will look like as the coronavirus pandemic continues, Band In A Bus is changing its approach to hand out recorders and drum sticks to as many kids as possible.“The least we can do in these trying times is help kids feel some type of happiness and excitement every day,” Rose said. "That’s kind of why we’re trying to pilot this program.”Band In A Bus says budget cuts due to the coronavirus are forcing some schools to cut back music programs even more, which makes these free boxes even more important for kids.“The worst thing that we can do to a kid is strip them of this creative outlet,” Rose said. “As a growing young person, the most valuable thing is learning who you are and your tone of voice.”The Band in a Box program has enough money to help about 500 kids, but it is raising more money to try to impact as many families as possible.“That’s the experience that every kid can kind of relate to – that excitement, that fun,” Rose said. “You could see their smiles as they were drumming. With hospitals overwhelmed in much of the United States, the number of coronavirus cases jumped to record levels on Wednesday. The total of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday was 144,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.There were also at least 1,900 coronavirus-related deaths reported in the US in the last 24 hours, according to Johns Hopkins, marking the deadliest day of the pandemic since May 6, when 2,300 Americans died of the virus.Wednesday's case increase was the highest single-day total since the pandemic began and broke a record that stood for one day. The previous record of 140,000 new cases was set on Tuesday. Wednesday marked the ninth consecutive day in which there were at least 100,000 new cases reported.The news comes as governors and public health experts throughout the country have pleaded with citizens to wear masks and follow social distancing recommendations. A number of states were looking to re-impose restrictions in hopes of keeping hospitals from filling up with COVID-19 patients.Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine threatened to close restaurants, bars and gyms in his state again if things don’t change. The state had more than 6,000 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, marking a one-day record.“I am very well aware of the burden this will place on employees and the owners, but these are places where it is difficult or impossible to maintain mask-wearing, which we know now is the chief way of slowing this virus,” he said.In neighboring Indiana, the state is limiting the size of social gatherings, depending on the county.“Unfortunately, too many of us have let our guards down,” Gov. Eric Holcomb said Wednesday.Across the country in Nevada, the state’s governor issued a similar warning."We don't have much time to act to avoid a dangerous hospital surge and keep our economy going and keep people at work," said Gov. Steve Sisolak.The COVID Tracking Project, a project led by The Atlantic, shows that current coronavirus-related hospitalizations hurdled the 60,000 mark in the US on Tuesday for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has more than doubled in the last six weeks throughout the US.While state governors have been doing what they can to fight the virus, the White House has been silent on the virus since Election Day.The US is not alone in seeing a surge in cases. When will companies learn the golden rule: Think before you tweet.Keurig and other brands caught flack from all sides for how they responded to social media calls to distance themselves from Fox News host Sean Hannity. Companies walked back statements they made on Twitter or struggled to explain their actual relationships to Hannity -- in each case stoking the social media fires.Critics targeted companies that advertised on Hannity's syndicated radio show as well as his Fox News program after Hannity appeared to defend Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore on Thursday. Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct with teenagers, including a 14-year-old girl. He has denied the allegations.The firestorm began in earnest on Friday. Angelo Carusone, president of liberal watchdog group Media Matters for America, appealed directly to brands like Keurig to cut advertising ties with Hannity."Good afternoon @Keurig. You are currently sponsoring Sean Hannity's show ... please reconsider," Carusone wrote on Twitter.Keurig responded the next morning. The company said on Twitter: "We worked with our media partner and FOX news to stop our ad from airing during the Sean Hannity Show."Keurig's response was praised by Hannity's critics. But it sparked a backlash from Hannity's supporters, who started a #BoycottKeurig hashtag and, in some cases, even smashed their own Keurig machines.By Monday, Keurig CEO Bob Gamgort had apologized for how Keurig responded."The decision to publicly communicate our programming decision via our Twitter account was highly unusual," Gamgort wrote an internal memo to employees. "This gave the appearance of 'taking sides' in an emotionally charged debate that escalated on Twitter and beyond over the weekend, which was not our intent."Keurig wasn't the only company to walk back its initial response to the Hannity controversy.Realtor.com tweeted on Saturday "we are not currently, and will not be running TV ads on Hannity." But it later deleted the tweet, and on Sunday it posted a statement to its corporate blog with a very different message: "We will continue to place ads across a broad range of networks, including Fox News and its top shows."Reddi-wip, which is owned by ConAgra, tweeted on Monday "our objective has always been to reach fans in ways that align with our values. Therefore, we are removing our ads from the show," in response to a user who asked the brand not to support Hannity. Later, the company said "we removed Hannity from our advertising plans," adding on Tuesday, "this program has not been included in our media plan for a long time."A ConAgra representative confirmed on Tuesday that the company has not advertised with the program for months, but added that the controversy hasn't impacted ConAgra's future plans.Irv Schenkler, Director of the Management Communication Program at New York University's Stern School of Business, said that companies need to take a balanced approach when developing their social media strategies. On one hand, firms should be engaging with their customers online. On the other, they should be wary of jumping into a controversy too quickly, he advised.Sometimes when companies tweet "they are acting from the seat of the pants, as opposed to taking a moment to analyze and examine the dimensions of the event or issue," Schenkler explained.By responding too quickly on social media, companies may end up exacerbating controversies that may fizzle out on their own, he said.Brayden King, a professor of Management and Organizations at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, said Twitter can be an easy way for brands to get messages to a large audience. "Twitter reaches a lot of people very quickly," he said, while "a press release can be ignored by the very people you want to see it."But companies do face a risk when they use social media platforms to disseminate a position. "If you don't think through the media strategy carefully, you can expose yourself to criticism from other people -- including people you see as potential customers," King said.Schenkler added that brands may sometimes forget how public their Twitter interactions are."What [brands] might consider to be business conversations are just out there, and people forget that," he said. "And they pay the price sometimes."To protect themselves, Schenkler said, companies may want to enact a social media process or protocol that prioritizes the brand's ultimate objectives -- and keep it in mind when responding to a controversy.  4534

  

When Sen. John McCain's family announced Friday that he was ending medical treatment?for aggressive brain cancer, the news shook Capitol Hill and prompted support from his Republican and Democratic colleagues alike. But one prominent voice was missing: President Donald Trump's.The White House press office did not react to the news, and when Trump traveled to Ohio in the evening he did not mention the ailing senator in a nearly hour-long speech to Ohio Republicans, which ran a gamut of topics from the death of Mollie Tibbetts to NFL protests to Kanye West.In past months, Trump has frequently referenced McCain's 2017 health care vote on the campaign trail without naming him, drawing the ire of the Arizona Republican's family."One of our wonderful senators said 'thumbs down' at 2 o'clock in the morning," the President said at a campaign event for New York's Rep. Claudia Tenney earlier this month.The senator's daughter, conservative commentator Meghan McCain, called Trump's comments "gross and pathetic" at the time.Although Trump claimed the Senate was one vote away, in reality the vote was only to go to conference with the House on the Senate's "skinny repeal" of Obamacare.The President did not repeat that reference, which has become a familiar refrain in his stump speech, on Friday evening.Trump also did not mention McCain at a signing ceremony earlier this month at Fort Drum, New York, for a defense spending bill the senator had spearheaded, the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act.Trump expressed support for McCain when the senator's tumor was first diagnosed."Senator John McCain has always been a fighter," the President said in a statement at the time. "Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon."A White House official said Trump also called McCain following word of the senator's diagnosis.And before that health care vote, the President called McCain an "American hero" in a tweet.Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House last December, Trump said he had talked with the senator's wife."I did speak to Cindy McCain, and I wished her well. I wished John well. They've headed back, but I understand he'll come if we ever needed his vote, which hopefully we won't. But the word is John will come back if we need his vote, and it's too bad," Trump said.He continued, "It's tough. He's going through a very, he's going through a very tough time. There's no question about it, but he will come back if we need his vote."The two have had a tortured relationship and McCain, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in July 2017, has been one of the administration's most outspoken Republican critics.Trump has previously attacked McCain's record of service, saying the Vietnam veteran and one-time prisoner of war is "not a war hero" because he was captured."He is not a war hero," Trump told pollster Frank Luntz, who was hosting a July 2015 question-and-answer session at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa."He is a war hero," Luntz interjected."He is a war hero because he was captured?" Trump said, cutting him off. "I like people that weren't captured, OK? I hate to tell you. He is a war hero because he was captured. OK, you can have -- I believe perhaps he is a war hero."Trump has since acknowledged that McCain is a hero, but he refused to apologize in subsequent interviews. 3511
