BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's anti-graft authorities announced on Monday in a statement that during the year it had found 21.5 billion yuan (3.24 billion U.S.Dollar) of public money held in unauthorized departmental coffers.The probe was led by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China.The probe had put government agencies, public institutions, social groups, state-owned and state holding enterprises under scrutiny, and had uncovered 45,593 cases of public money being held in unauthorized departmental coffers, involving a total of 21.5 billion yuan.A total of 2,669 officials involved in these cases have been punished, also according to the statement.

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhuanet) --Chinese companies Thursday denied allegations by a Zimbabwe trade union that said Chinese construction firms had violated labor laws there by underpaying and abusing local staff.Ge Yizhong, deputy general manager of Zim Nantong Construction, which is currently operating in Zimbabwe, told the Global Times that local workers his company had hired were satisfied with their working conditions, including salaries."There is no ill-treatment of workers at my company. We have provided protective clothing to local workers and pay them according to the regulations set out by the local trade union," he said. "We have adjusted working hours to meet workers' demands. BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- During the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), China spent 3.26 trillion yuan on social security, an annual increase of 17.6 percent, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) told Xinhua Friday.Wang Jun, vice minister of the MOF, said in the 2006-2010 period, the social security expenditure from the central government stood at 1.4 trillion yuan (210.19 billion U.S. dollars), which was 2.1 times the expenditure in the previous five years.As the improvement of civil welfare is a crucial component of the harmonious society China is pursuing, financial authorities at all levels should continue to raise investments in social security when making the 2011 fiscal budget and plans for the 12th Five-Year Plan starting from 2011, Wang said.

BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Friday welcomed ruling from the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the European Union (EU) anti-dumping duties on Chinese screws and bolts were discriminatory and are in violation of global commerce rules.For a long time, the EU has been requiring Chinese exporters to prove they meet with the "single duty" requirements when they are responding to anti-dumping cases, bringing a heavy burden and unfair treatment to Chinese companies, said an official with the MOC.In particular the WTO ruled the EU's single duty requirements and practices are discriminatory and violated WTO rules.China urged the EU to respect the WTO ruling and rid itself of codes or practices that go against WTO rules and treat Chinese exporters fairly to ensure normal trade between China and the EU, the official said.At the beginning of 2009, the EU decided to impose anti-dumping duties of up to 87 percent for the next five years on fasteners imported from China.The WTO set up an expert panel on Oct. 23, 2009 after China initiated the WTO case on July 31, 2009, saying anti-dumping measures taken by the EU against the import of Chinese steel fasteners violated WTO trade rules.

JINAN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Shandong Province said Saturday that one of the two killers who shot dead four policemen on Jan. 4 had also murdered another man before the gunfight.Liu Jianjun, 50, allegedly killed one man on Dec. 29 last year in Dezhou City of Shandong.Liu and his 52-year-old brother Liu Lumin shot at policemen who were investigating the Dec. 29 murder case in Tai'an City of the province on Jan. 4 .Three policemen were killed at the scene, and another died later in the hospital.After gunning down the officers, the two men fled the scene, hijacking four cars and shooting two drivers before their car collided with a police wagon.The gunmen, armed with a homemade pistol and a double-barreled shotgun, continued to fire after police had cornered them, injuring more policemen and civilians.Liu Lumin then shot and killed himself while Liu Jianjun was taken into custody.
