After about 90 minutes, 82 spellers moved on to the second to square off against Merriam-Webster's hardest words.Like with any competition, the difficulty level took another step up. Abigail Rosado, of All Hallows Academy, kicked off the round with the word "eiderdown" and nailed it. Students in grades 6 - 8 are eligible to compete in the regional competition, which will take place at the Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley. San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. The workers are prepared to settle as soon as Marriott decides to do the right thing and sign a contract that provides living wages.”For business owner Joey Aiello, he says he won’t be able to make back the money he’s lost. “I just have to work harder and keep everything a float the best I can.” 1869

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeless people in San Diego woke up Tuesday morning to find San Diego Police officers going street by street, offering resources.  Police officers lined the streets of the East Village. They were going street by street approaching the homeless in their tents. At one point there were at least eight patrol cars on one block.  SDPD says their efforts are a part of their ongoing outreach to let the homeless know about the resources available to them in hopes of ending the cycle of homelessness.  Most of the homeless received warnings about their property blocking the street or other violations. A few were detained for previous violations. One person was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant. Two people were transported to county mental health. Officers were also letting people know about the new bathrooms installed by the city in hopes of stopping the spread of Hepatitis A.  965

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A new rule from the California Air Resources Board could wind up costing San Diego MTS hundreds of millions of dollars.CARB announced a series of regulations last week, all aimed at making bus fleets more environmentally friendly.One rule says all buses need to be zero-emission by 2040.That could be costly.Right now, SDMTS uses Compressed Natural Gas in their buses, which they say burns much cleaner than diesel fuel.Those buses cost 7,000 each, and MTS buys about 50 new buses each year.New electric, zero-emission buses will cost about 2,000 each.Replacing the entire fleet with electric buses will cost 7.5 million more than CNG buses."The technology is relatively new, the costs are high right now," says MTS Spokesperson Rob Schupp. "I think CARB is looking into the future. As we encourage more and more manufacturers to build these buses, the costs will come down."San Diego MTS is already putting six electric buses in their fleet this summer as part of a pilot program.They'll use those to test how the electric buses operate across several terrains and distances in San Diego.They also received a grant to help buy 11 more for a South Bay Bus Rapid Transit line that will open in 3 years.Beyond that, MTS says they may use a combination of state funding, grants and possibly rate increases to pay for the new electric buses.Schupp says the state has plans to chip in about 0,000 per bus.The cost of new buses isn't the only concern about going electric.MTS says they need to look into how much electricity will cost compared to natural gas.They also may need to build and install charging stations around town, because the buses may not be able to go as far as they would using gas.Despite all that, Schupp says the MTS Board fully supports the change. 1812

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A suspect was arrested in a 1970s-era killing in California after investigators used the same advanced DNA testing that helped crack the Golden State Killer case, authorities said Thursday.John Arthur Getreu, 75, was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting and strangling 21-year-old Janet Ann Taylor in March 1974, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office announced.Taylor was last seen alive attempting to hitchhike from Palo Alto to her home in nearby La Honda. Her body was found along a busy street.Getreu was already in custody in Santa Clara County after being charged last year with sexually assaulting and strangling Leslie Perlov, another 21-year-old woman, in 1973.Investigators previously believed the killings of Perlov and Taylor were connected. But their cases had gone unsolved until DNA testing evolved enough to deliver credible results from the degraded DNA collected at both killing scenes.Authorities in both counties submitted DNA samples to the same publicly available DNA database used to identify Joseph DeAngelo, who authorities believe is the Golden State Killer.Getreu was linked to both killings after the testing connected him to both crime scenes, investigators said.In the Golden State Killer case, investigators used DNA from the attacks to locate a relative of DeAngelo then turned to traditional techniques to find the suspect.Authorities have linked the Golden State Killer to 13 attacks of women throughout California between 1974 and 1986."Law enforcement is not giving up on victims," Assistant San Mateo County Sheriff Gregory Rothaus said at a news conference on Getreu in Redwood City. "We have new DNA technology that is a great tool for us."Santa Clara County court records show Getreau is represented by the county's public defender's office, which didn't return a call.Getreau has not yet been appointed a lawyer in San Mateo County. 1910
