HELSINKI, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- It was the afternoon of Feb. 12 local time in the Confucius Institute classroom at the downtown University of Helsinki. To celebrate the "Year of the Tiger," they staged a string of performances to share their happiness.The performances were quite Chinese and included small dramas, Chinese folk songs, poems from the Tang and Song dynasties, and Taichi.Apparently, their love of the traditional Chinese culture simmered into the music and poetry. Additionally, the students also brilliantly displayed their achievements in learning the Chinese language.Perhaps the most symbolic icon of the Spring festival is the dumpling, which would certainly feed the hunger of the students at the Confucius Institute for both food and knowledge.Juhani Riisio, a student at the University of Helsinki, called the dumplings "quite good to taste."The students knew that dumplings are always served during the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays, but making the food was a new challenge for them.The first time doing anything is never easy. However, it could be read from the students' actions and faces that they were doing their best.It seemed that they were making the dumplings as carefully and confidently as they were at learning Chinese.Hard work and eagerness to learn usually pays off. The students were soon able to made decent looking dumplings, though the taste was still waiting to be examined.As the experimental dumplings were cooked and served, delicious smells seemed to stuff the room. Anyone who wanted to know the results of the students' efforts could see nothing but gladness and comfort from the smiles of both teachers and students.The making of a dumpling may take only a couple of hours to learn but a culture could take a lifetime to appreciate. Small and symbolic as the little dumplings are, they help to shorten the distance between the western world and China, facilitating communications amongst different peoples. By learning from each other, it is certain that our tomorrows would be defined by mutual understandings instead of mistrust.

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai urged here Friday that public complaints and petitions should be handled properly to promote social stability and harmony.Ma Kai, also secretary-general of the State Council, or cabinet, made the remarks at a national conference attended by heads of relevant government departments dealing with such petitions.Ma stressed that the government should make more efforts to prevent the occurrence of disputes and complaints right from the start.He also called for better investigation and sound settlement of petition cases.He urged setting up a risk assessment system in the decision making procedure in major social issues.Better implementing existing policies and the accountability system for relevant official departments are also needed, Ma said.

ZHANGZHOU, Fujian, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Friday visited some Taiwan businesses in Zhangzhou of southeastern Fujian Province ahead of the Spring Festival to extend New Year greetings.Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited a business park for Taiwan farmers in Zhangpu county of Zhangzhou City. The park, set up in 2006, houses more than 70 Taiwan-funded agricultural firms."We will try our best in everything that will benefit the Taiwan compatriots, and we will honor our words," Hu told the Taiwan business people.He said the mainland and Taiwan were negotiating on the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement. "Its' something that will help promote cross-Strait economic cooperation and bring win-win results. BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The State Council of China Friday issued an urgent notice urging relevant departments and local authorities to settle pay disputes involving migrant workers as millions of them are heading home for lunar new year reunion.The notice asked local governments and relevant departments to prioritize in their work the settlement of migrant workers' back pay dispute with their employers.It underlined the construction industry where back pay disputes often happen.It also ordered local governments to improve the emergency management system to respond to possible mass incidents caused by pay disputes.Two migrant workers were stabbed to death by their employer over a pay dispute Wednesday in central China's Henan Province.The two men asked for wages on behalf of 17 fellow workers and got into a fight with their labor contractor after being told that their monthly payment had been docked by over 100 yuan (about 14.6 U.S. dollars), and then were stabbed in the neck with a fruit knife by the contractor.In China, millions of migrant workers from the countryside make their living in booming cities. Back pay to migrant workers has affected the income of the rural population for a long time and is considered a "chronic illness" undermining social stability.

SHANGHAI, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese educational institutions blamed for cyber attacks on Google and other firms said Saturday the allegations are unfounded.The New York Times reported Thursday the cyber attacks on Google and other American firms have been traced to Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) and Lanxiang Vocational School (Lanxiang) in east China's Shandong Province, which the report alleged has ties to the Chinese military."We were shocked and indignant to hear these baseless allegations which may harm the university's reputation," said a SJTU spokesperson.The spokesperson said the allegation linking the attacks with SJTU students or teachers does not hold water."The report of the New York Times was based simply on an IP address. Given the highly developed network technology today, such a report is neither objective nor balanced," the spokesperson said.SJTU will fully cooperate with investigators if Google seeks judicial remedies, the spokesperson said.Li Zixiang, party chief at Lanxiang, another alleged source of the attacks, said, "Investigation in the staff found no trace that the attacks originated from our school."Lanxiang students are still on their winter vacation, Li added.He said Lanxiang has no relations with the military, adding that school authorities do not have military backing.He also dismissed the report's suggestion of involvement of a "specific computer science class" taught by a Ukrainian professor."There is no Ukrainian teacher in the school and we have never employed any foreign staff," Li confirmed."The report was unfounded. Please show the evidence," he said.Lanxiang, founded in 1984, has about 20,000 students learning vocational skills such as cooking, auto repair and hairdressing.The computer science class offers basic courses about Photoshop, 3D drawing and Word -- not software engineering."It was not until 2006 that our graduates began to join the army. So far, 38 students have been recruited by the military for their talent in auto repair, cooking and electric welding," said Zhou Hui, director of the school's general office, who stressed it is natural for citizens to join the army at a proper age.Google said on Jan. 12 it might pull out of the Chinese market, citing disagreement with government policies and unidentified attacks targeting Google's services in China.
