SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least three large sharks were spotted off the coast of Torrey Pines State Beach swimming close to surfers in the water on Thursday.California State Parks Lifeguards say they received reports of five sharks swimming about 50 feet from shore and 100 to 200 yards from Lifeguards Tower 1 at about 12 p.m. The sharks were seen specifically gliding around the Flat Rock area, located north of Black's Beach and south of Torrey Pines State Beach, according to a State Parks spokesperson.Sky10 was overhead as the sharks swam nearby surfers who were just offshore of Torrey Pines:Officials say the largest of the sharks, which may have been great white sharks, was about 10 feet in length."The sharks did not interact with any beachgoers during this time. The shark actions are considered non-aggressive and consistent with normal white shark behavior," a State Parks spokesperson said.A San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard made announcements to people in the water about the sighting. Announcements were being made in the area up to one mile south of Bathtub Rock, SDFD spokeswoman Monica Mu?oz said.Shark sighting signs would remain up in the area for 24 hours, officials said. 1198

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Californians trying to raise happy and healthy families are finding affordability a challenge, a study shows. WalletHub ranked states based on feedback from psychology, social work and child studies experts at several universities, and statistics from each region. States were given grades in categories including the cost of housing, child care, and unemployment. California ranked 19th overall. The individual category rankings are as follows: 5th: Percent of families with young kids5th: Infant mortality rate15th: Separation and divorce rate34th: Percent of families in poverty36th: Violent crime rate38th: Unemployment rate46th: Child care costs49th: Median family salary (adjusted for cost of living)50th: Housing affordability Minnesota, Massachusetts and North Dakota filled the top three spots for family-friendly states. The worst states for families were New Mexico, Mississippi and Louisiana. Housing prices, a problem for western states, were at their best levels in the Midwest. Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota and Ohio topped the list. California's median home price as of November 2018 was 7,900, Zillow reported. The median rent price in California was ,750.Each state’s affordability was based in part on median mortgage debt, credit score, housing costs, share of people who save money for their child’s education, and annual family health insurance premium. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the Timken Museum of Art remains shuttered due to coronavirus-related restrictions, museum officials say they're preparing for whatever a post-pandemic reopening will require. The museum said this week that it plans to install military-grade anti-viral technologies, which will reportedly clean the air of harmful pathogens at a level higher than that of hospital operating rooms."The Timken and Putnam families, innovators themselves, created our free museum in 1965 as a result of their successes in technology and engineering," says museum Chairman of the Board Jessie Knight, Jr. "We are honored to carry on that tradition by being the first museum in the world to bring cutting edge, military grade technology into practical, everyday use."RELATED: In-Depth: Balboa Park's future unfolds during COVID-19 pandemicThe Balboa Park museum had originally planned to incorporate an ultraviolet technology into its existing HVAC system that would eliminate 10% to 20% of airborne pathogens. The new system will "capture and kill" up to 99.7% of pathogens, the museum says."We take our mission of making fine art accessible to everyone very seriously, particularly on the heels of a pandemic when arts and culture are needed more than ever," the museum's Executive Director Megan Pogue said. "When our visitors return to the Timken, they can feel confident knowing we have made this significant, groundbreaking investment that provides a safe, welcoming and enriched environment for all."RELATED: Observation Wheel could bring people back to Balboa ParkWhile the Timken is closed, the new anti-viral system will be installed and tested. The museum is also offering free online classes and lectures on art education and art-making activities and classes. The museum hopes to reopen in 2021, following additional improvements.RELATED: Balboa Park carousel work continues through pandemicThe Timken is not the only Balboa Park attraction using this time to enhance its offerings. Peter Comiskey, the Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, says that nearly every museum in the park has been refreshing exhibits and facilities."While they've been closed, they've been taking advantage of, in some cases, completely removing all of their pieces and reworking their entire buildings," says Comiskey. 2338

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As if San Diego's craft beer scene doesn't already have enough options, the legalization of marijuana has created new opportunities for companies interested in the world of the cannabis-infused.Enter High Style, a San Diego-based brewery launching a THC-infused, non-alcoholic beer called "Pale Haze." The drink incorporates the traditional flavors of beer using Amarillo and Cascade hops, as well as 10mg of THC.The beer has a "light, crisp, and extremely effervescent" flavor, according to the brewery, with notes of tropical fruit and citrus.RELATED: Blue Moon founder now brewing THC-infused craft beerHigh Style's Vice President of Marketing Jared Threw said the brewery's brewmaster worked over 12 months on the process to create the alcohol-free beer — though there are small traces of alcohol, as with most non-alcoholic beers. However, Threw said their goal was to perfect the beer so that it didn't taste like a typical non-alcoholic beer and much like a craft beer instead.Though the feeling of drinking a traditional beer shouldn't be lost, according to the company. High Style says consumers will feel a "fast onset similar to drinking an alcoholic beer," with a "light, clear headed, and euphoric high." But those effects could be different person to person."We recommend if someone isn't a heavy cannabis user, to start with half a beer, wait 1-2 hours for the effects to fully settle, and then have more as needed for the desired level," Threw said.Currently, the beer is only available at the dispensaries March and Ash in Mission Valley and Mankind Cooperative in Miramar. Though before High Style labels itself as a trailblazer, Threw said there's still room for others to help expand the market."It is hard for us to be an accurate example of the difficulty level since we are such a unique product type," Threw said. "We don't have a tasting room or restaurant at this time, so we aren't competing for sales in that way. Being so unique in the space, it is easy to break through the clutter, get attention, and have success at beer festivals."High Style says new locations will be added soon and hopes to have their beer available in all recreational marijuana states within the next three years. 2244
