The U.S. recorded more than 120,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday as cases continue to skyrocket across the country.According to Johns Hopkins University, there were 121,888 new cases of COVID-19 recorded across the country on Thursday. That shatters the previous record of 102,000 cases that were reported on Wednesday.Johns Hopkins reports that more than 1,200 people died of the virus in the U.S. on Thursday, the highest death total since Sept. 15. The highest daily death total throughout the pandemic occurred on April 15, when 2,600 people died.According to Johns Hopkins, COVID-19 is currently spreading faster in the U.S. than it is anywhere else in the world. The U.S. has recorded an average of about 80,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the last seven days; the country with the second-highest rate of new cases is India, with an average of about 45,000 new cases of the virus each day.Health officials warn that the U.S. is entering what could be the most dangerous and deadly period of the pandemic, as colder weather forces social gatherings indoors, where the virus is more easily spread.Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 9,606,369 cases reported in the US, 234,911 being fatal. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling nearly half a million Kidde smoke detectors, saying they could fail to work in the event of a fire.According to the CPSC, anyone with a Kidde smoke alarm should remove their alarm from the ceiling or wall and look for a yellow cap on the inside of the alarm (see photo above). The Washington Football Team might be called that longer than previously expected.Ahead of the team’s first game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles, owner Daniel Snyder told The Wall Street Journal the team name may remain as it is.“Sure, it's possible!” Snyder wrote in an email to the WSJ. “If the Washington Football Team name catches on and our fans embrace it then we would be happy to have it as our permanent name. I think we have developed a very classy retro look and feel.”The team dropped their name this summer, after years of criticism because it is a racial slur toward Native Americans. The U.S. Army has announced previously-scheduled leadership changes at Fort Hood as well as an investigation into the chain-of-command actions surrounding the case of Spc. Vanessa Guillen.Gen. Michael X. Garrett, commanding general of U.S. Army Forces Command, is directing that Maj. Gen. John B. Richardson IV formally assume duties as deputy commanding general for operations of III Corps and acting senior commander of Fort Hood.The change will take effect on Sept. 2.Army officials say the change in leadership was previously-scheduled and will enable "continuity of command" as III Corps returns from its role leading the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve.Maj. Gen. Richardson previously served as FORSCOM's director of operations from 2019-20 and was selected in March 2020 by the Department of the Army to serve as the next DCG for III Corps.Maj. Gen. Scott Efflandt will continue to serve as the deputy commanding general for support and will remain at Fort Hood to assist with the reintegration of III Corps as they return from their mission supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.With Maj. Gen. Efflandt remaining at Fort Hood, the Army will announce the name of a new commander for the 1st Armored Division, which Efflandt had previously been designated to lead. That announcement is expected in the coming days.The Army also announced that Sen. Garrett will appoint Gen. John Murray, commanding general of Army Futures Command, and one of the Army’s most senior commanders, to lead an in-depth investigation into the chain-of-command actions related to Spc. Vanessa Guillen.There are currently several investigations underway at Fort Hood. The Army says those investigations are tasked with reviewing a wide range of topics and concerns.
