SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Come February, SeaWorld San Diego is hoping to fill the night sky over Mission Bay with the lights of a drone show.The California Coastal Commission began considering their proposal for a test run at a hearing near San Francisco Thursday.For decades, fireworks capped off a day of summer fun at SeaWorld. A few years ago - amid ongoing concerns over impacts on wildlife, water quality and pets - SeaWorld scaled back the shows, in favor of laser light shows. Now comes another high-flying option in the form of the drone light shows like those that have wowed at places like Universal Studios and Disney World. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction crews have started on about 4.5 miles of bikeways and safety improvements stretching from downtown to Hillcrest.The projects include separated and buffered bikeways on Fourth and Fifth Avenues, safety improvements such as lighting, upgraded landscaping, and improved crosswalks for people with disabilities and pedestrians.In all, the project will cost .2 million and cross from B St. in downtown, through Bankers Hill, and to Washington St. in Hillcrest."This project will make it safer and easier for people to walk and bike along commonly traveled streets to visit local businesses and reach destinations such as Downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, and Hillcrest," said SANDAG Vice Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. "San Diegans are walking and biking more during the pandemic and this project will provide safe and convenient options for people to continue to choose active transportation, even when the health crisis is far behind us."The new bikeways are part of the Uptown Bikeways effort proposed in 2012, meant to connect Uptown, Old Town, Mission Valley, Downtown San Diego, North Park, and Balboa Park. SANDAG says community members worried about the potential loss of parking due to the project worked with officials to find solutions, and ultimately were able to provide a surplus of parking.The agency adds that it has modified construction schedules to best minimize its impact on businesses currently using temporary outdoor setups to operate under coronavirus restrictions along Fourth and Fifth Avenues.Construction on the project is expected to be finished in 2022. During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent lane closures, parking restrictions, construction noise, and dust. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ask anyone, and they'll probably tell you they're going through "COVID Fatigue."It's a thing. In fact, UC Davis Health defines it in a study as tired of being cooped up, tired of being careful, and scared. But what if we told you we could end this pandemic in just five weeks? An MIT-trained physicist claims he has a theory that can do just that."I am a physicist and complexity scientist, and I've been working on pandemics for 15 years," said Dr. Yaneer Bar-Yam from his Massachusetts home.Dr. Bar-Yam is president of the New England Complex Systems Institute. He's a data scientist who studies pandemics and is an expert in controlling infectious diseases. His recommendations were partly responsible for stopping Ebola in 2014, and he claims his complex theory could do the same to stop COVID-19 before a vaccine arrives."The crazy thing is we're always just about five weeks away from getting rid of this disease," said Dr. Bar-Yam.Sounds promising, but his theory takes discipline."What we really need to do is implement a set of very strong actions," added Dr. Bar-Yam.Those actions are on his website EndCoronavirus.org. There are nine specific measures to crush COVID-19 in just five weeks and fully reopen our economy, our schools, and our lives."The most important thing locally is staying away from other people because the way the disease transmits is by breathing the same air or touching the same surfaces," said Dr. Bar-Yam.One of those measures is a lockdown. But not what you might envision, by being cooped up and unable to leave your house. Dr. Bar-Yam uses a theory called Green Zones, something we could even do at the county level. The goal is to go from neighborhood to neighborhood, on a micro-community level, getting coronavirus cases down to zero."You don't want to travel to other neighborhoods or other areas because that's how you transmit the disease from area to area," said Dr. Bar-Yam.The first two weeks are used to isolate cases and stop transmission for 14 consecutive days. If you're not in a green zone, you can't travel outside your neighborhood. Then, the next two to three weeks are used to effectively test, trace, and isolate anyone capable of transmitting the virus until your community is down to zero cases. Dr. Bar-Yam describes what we're doing now as fighting a house fire by attacking the fire in only one room."That's right, it's all over the place, and we're constantly trying to deal with it. And we have to take super aggressive actions if the fire is burning all of the time," he said.If you don't think it can work, know this: his method was practiced in Ireland, Iceland, and numerous other countries, including New Zealand, where less than five cases a day have been reported since May 3. And yes, it even worked for the most part in China with it's 1.4 billion people. But here's the catch: one of the nine measures to crush COVID is "getting everyone on board." As we've seen recently in Ocean Beach or the religious gathering in Cardiff with people packed together without masks, that's a hard thing to do."Everyone has to say, 'Yes, we're going to do this together. And it's our responsibility,'" said Dr. Bar-Yam. "You can't wait for the government. You can't wait for the mayor, or the county, or the state. It has to be a community decision to do this." 3348
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Caltrans is starting a yearlong pilot program in San Diego to reduce wrong-way driving.The agency has installed markings at 30 locations that include red arrows and "DO NOT ENTER" written across the pavement that are only legible when driving in the wrong direction onto freeway ramps.The markings will stay up until the end of the year, according to Caltrans.The agency says that a previous three-year pilot program helped reduce wrong-way driving by 44% in San Diego. The program utilized special reflectors, sensors, and illuminated signs in early 2018.Now, those specialized reflectors have been installed on hundreds of miles of highways, according to Caltrans."The number of wrong-way drivers decreased significantly during the initial pilot program," said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. "The addition of these markings, along with what we have learned thus far, will go a long way as we continue to study ways to deter wrong-way drivers."While wrong-way crashes only account for less than 1% of all crashes on California's highways, they are often among the deadliest, Caltrans said."We are constantly looking for ways to improve safety on the transportation system," said Caltrans (San Diego area) District 11 Director Gustavo Dallarda. "If the testing of this new product is successful, it could provide a new tool to reduce wrong-way driving." 1383
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials say they seized more than .1 million in narcotics in two days at ports of entry in San Diego and Imperial Valley counties.Monday, a 45-year-old Mexican citizen driving a commercial bus was stopped at the San Ysidro port of entry and underwent a secondary screening. A K9 officer detected narcotics in the vehicle's gas tank.Officers found 229 pounds of cocaine, 23 pounds of fentanyl, and more than six pounds of heroin in the gas tank. In a second incident, on Tuesday, agents stopped a 23-year-old U.S. citizen at the Calexico East port of entry and referred them to a secondary screening. The port's imaging system screened the vehicle and noticed an anomoly in the back seat. A K9 officer also made a positive detection.Officers discovered 73 wrapped packages of methamphetamine hidden in the back seat, firewall, glove box, and inside vehicle panels.Later that same day, at the Calexico West port of entry, a 35-year-old Mexican citizen was found to be smuggling narcotics in the same manner.Imaging and a K9 officer detected narcotics, leading officers to find 50 wrapped packaged of methamphetamine inside vehicle panels.CBP officials seized all of the narcotics, valued together at more than .1 million.“Seizing these 400 plus pounds of narcotics is not only about keeping drugs out of our communities,” said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. “It’s also about keeping millions of dollars in profits away from transnational criminal organizations, and preventing the ensuing crime and chaos they cause on both sides of the border." 1617
