Washington Capitals forward Devante Smith-Pelly was allegedly on the receiving end of taunts from fans in Chicago's United Center, forcing security to remove several of those responsible for the chants. After Smith-Pelly was penalized for fighting with the Blackhawks' Connor Murphy, he could be seen tapping his stick on the glass of the penalty box and confronting a group of fans. According to the Washington Post, one of the penalty box officials contacted arena security to have the fans removed. Smith-Pelly said the fans chanted "basketball, basketball, basketball" at Smith-Pelly. Smith-Pelly, a 25-year-old Canadian, is one of roughly two dozen black players currently in the NHL. "I just heard some chanting, some racially charged chanting I guess, and you could tell by my reaction, I got pretty upset," Smith-Pelly said on Sunday. "What was said this time around crossed the line."Smith-Pelly said this is not the first time an incident like this has happened. "It has happened in hockey before, it has happened to people we personally know, (my father and I) have had this conversation before," Smith-Pelly said. "A few ignorant people being idiots, that's it." NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a statement on Sunday supporting the decision to eject the fans. "The National Hockey League condemns this unacceptable and reprehensible behavior," Bettman said. "The League fully supports the actions taken by the United Center and the Blackhawks to eject the offenders and would expect the same response to any similarly unacceptable behavior at any of our arenas."While this incident was isolated in nature, no player, coach, official or fan should ever have to endure such abuse at one of our games. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been released from a Baltimore hospital where she had been treated for a possible infection.The 86-year-old Ginsburg has returned to her home in Washington, D.C., and is “doing well,” court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said Sunday.Ginsburg spent two nights at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She was taken there Friday after experiencing chills and fever.The court says she received intravenous antibiotics and fluids and that her symptoms abated.Ginsburg has had four occurrences of cancer, including two in the past year. She had lung cancer surgery in December and received radiation treatment for a tumor on her pancreas in August.She had a rare absence from a public session of the court in mid-November because of what the court said was a stomach bug. She was back on the bench the next time the justices met.Her latest hospital stay began Friday, after the justices met in private to discuss pending cases.She was initially evaluated at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington before being transferred to Johns Hopkins for further evaluation and treatment of any possible infection.Ginsburg has been on the court since 1993, appointed by President Bill Clinton. WAUWATOSA, Wisc. — An organization founded by rapper Jay-Z has offered to pay the bail bonds and citation fees for those who were arrested in Wauwatosa Thursday night while protesting the decision not to charge a local police officer who shot and killed of 17-year-old in February.Jay-Z is funding the bail bonds and citation fees through Team ROC, the social justice arm of the rapper's entertainment company Roc Nation. The group also funded billboards calling for justice for Jacob Blake in the Kenosha area earlier this year.Wauwatosa police said 24 people were arrested Thursday night while were protesting the decision to not charge Officer Joseph Mensah in the fatal February shooting of 17-year-old Alvin Cole. Those arrested included Alvin Cole's mother, Tracy, and Alvin's sisters.In a statement issued Friday, Jay-Z and Team ROC called for Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers to select a special prosecutor to "ensure justice is served."Team ROC says it also attempted to erect billboards to call for justice for Cole in Wauwatosa, but claims its request was apparently denied by the owner of the billboards, identified by the organization as the Lamar Advertising Company.Team ROC says it also ran an advertisement in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel last summer, calling for Mensha's immediate prosecution and firing.
