SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Foodies have no shortage of fun in San Diego, whether it comes to the region's Mexican cuisine, Italian flavors, or Asian dishes.But there's so much more to offer local diners, and it hasn't gone unnoticed.San Diego ranked highly among the nation's best foodie cities, according to a new study from WalletHub. In comparison, the top food city, Portland, Ore., ranked 13th in affordability and 5th in diversity, accessibility, and quality.The top cities were rounded out by New York City in 2nd; Miami, Fla.; San Francisco; Los Angeles; and Las Vegas, Nev.So how did San Diego rank so well? WalletHub's study weighted its two main scores using 30 metrics that were graded on a 100-point scale. Metrics included factors like sales tax, cost of groceries, restaurants per capita, restaurant growth, and more.RELATED: Michelin identifies several San Diego restaurants as 'hidden gems'Numbers aside, San Diegans likely already know of the diverse cuisine found across the county, from food halls such as those in Little Italy (Little Italy Food Hall), Point Loma (Liberty Station Food Hall), and Carlsbad (Windmill Food Hall) to the many specialty food markets that dot the region.San Diego also saw its first restaurant to be awarded a Michelin star this year at Fairmont Grand Del Mar's Addison.And if you value a view as much as the meal, you're in luck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Getting an education these days seems to be getting more and more expensive. But The San Diego Foundation has millions in scholarship money to award to local students pursuing a variety of secondary education options. Students like Jawid Habib, who received money through several years of college and law school. As the son of Afghan immigrants, Habib says his accomplishments meant a great deal, "I'll never forget the moment that I got my college acceptance letter at UCSD and I handed it to my mom and I'll never forget the tears in her eyes and I'll never forget the tears in my father's eyes when they saw that acceptance letter."As happy as that moment was, the reality of paying for school was still a challenge, until he found the Foundation. "It gave me peace of mind, that's one of the biggest things it gave me peace of mind because I was more focused on success rather than focused on how to afford my education," Habib said.Danielle Valenciano is the director of community scholarships at the foundation and tells 10News that last year the non-profit gave out more than .6 million to nearly 900 students. "If we're able to help offset hunger or homelessness or their books or a bus pass so they can get to school every day, we're doing our job as a community to help these students succeed," Valenciano said. The application process for next year is already underway, and there's money for all kinds of education, including community college, career and technical schools and teaching credential programs. Valenciano also says some of their donors are looking for so-called diamonds in the rough, "Students who may not have the best high school grades but there's something there and they have aspirations and they have a goal, these donors want to help these students."And hopefully give them an opportunity to achieve their goals, like Habib who is now a practicing attorney. 1921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Efforts to streamline the construction of a massive transportation hub in the Midway District and update the Navy's Old Town campus have been approved by the state.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2731 this week, which will allow the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) to quicken the environmental review process in order to build a transit hub connecting to San Diego International Airport and redevelop the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) Old Town campus site, should the Navy partner with SANDAG.The bill, introduced by California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria and Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), will allow SANDAG to use the Navy's environmental document as the basis of its California Environmental Quality Act document and requires most legal actions over the project to be resolved in 270 days.RELATED: Mayor Faulconer, Acting Navy Sec. agree to make NAVWAR facility a transit hubThe bill will also require the transit hub to meet high environmental benchmarks, such as LEED Gold certification, reducing vehicle miles by 25%, and be greenhouse gas neutral in exchange for the streamlined environmental process."This bill represents a unique opportunity to protect the existing 5,000 Navy jobs from relocation, create a 21st-century transportation system in San Diego, and provide desperately needed economic stimulus to our local economy in the wake of COVID-19," said Gloria. "This project has the potential to generate at least 16,000 jobs and provide housing for up to 27,000 residents – both of which we know are desperately needed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Heavy rain over the last few years has brought an unexpected splash of color to portions of San Diego.For the last month or so, Rainbow Eucalyptus trees have been shedding their bark, revealing a multi-colored trunk."It's outstanding," says Peter Fritsch, who walks by a handful of the trees along Sports Arena Boulevard. "I love the contrast between the gold and the red and the gray and sometimes blue."RELATED: Interactive map: Exploring San Diego's history, culture through street artHorticulture experts say the colors are more pronounced in tropical climates, but here in San Diego, you can still see a rainbow on the trees."As it ages, the stuff that doesn't look as colorful, has been oxidized somewhat, it peels off," says Bradley Brown, a Master Arborist with Tree Life Consulting. "Over time, the new bark will have those varying shades of color."According to the city, there are Rainbow Eucalyptus trees in Balboa Park, Sports Arena, the San Diego Zoo and parts of Mission Bay. There's no official count for how many exist in the city.Still, right now, they're easy to spot.RELATED: Mission Hills home transformed into whimsical topiary garden"It's amazing watching all the bark peel off and seeing the rainbow come alive in them," says Jason Sandoval, who owns a gas station that has several of the trees nearby.Eucalyptus trees have a rough reputation across San Diego. They grow fast and have a tendency to fall over in high wind and rain events.But Brown says they can be safe if they're well maintained. He'd like to see more planted throughout the city."It's something we should embrace. It's kind of San Diego's tree," he says. "You see pictures of LA and they have palm trees. Ours is the Eycalyptus. It's those Dr. Seuss forms along the freeway that's something we should embrace." 1829

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Evacuations across San Diego County during large wildfires will look different this fire season due to the pandemic.Sean Mahoney, Regional Chief Executive Officer for the American Red Cross Southern California Region, said they've put together a plan for families that could be impacted by wildfires this year.Mahoney said it starts with the temporary evacuation points, where families can initially go after being evacuated. That is a place for them to safety wait until firefighters can get the fire under control and to receive information.Mahoney said buildings like community centers and libraries have traditionally served as temporary evacuation points, but putting people indoors now carries risk due to COVID-19.This year, the Red Cross has identified several possible temporary evacuation points that would be safer during the pandemic. Many are local school parking lots. Instead of waiting indoors, they will ask for families to remain in their vehicles until a Red Cross worker can attend to them."We would approach their window, we would have a mask, and we would get their cell numbers, and from that point on, we can use cell phones to give them updates," Mahoney said.Mahoney added they picked parking structures with shade so families can be more comfortable.In cases where families need to be sheltered overnight, Mahoney said they have two plans, depending on the situation."If there are just a small number of people displaced, we'll put them in hotel rooms we'll have Red Cross people in the hotels, and then we'll just have to adjust feeding them as well," Mahoney said. "It'll be much more costly, but we have a responsibility, and it's our mission to provide sheltering and feeding folks on the worst day of their lives, and we take it very seriously."In cases where they have to establish an overnight shelter, Mahoney said they would look to set up several shelters with fewer people at each one. Space and capacity would be factors."Certainly at the shelters, our staff will be wearing masks, and taking those precautions as far advanced cleaning and separating people and separating cots. We will also provide masks to people that come in and make sure they do health checks as they come in," Mahoney said. 2262
