LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A helicopter crashed offshore near Jones Inlet Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said the pilot, a 64-year-old man, appeared to be attempting a controlled descent at Meadow Island at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chopper landed in an area with about three feet of water.Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and several other local agencies responded. The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a facial laceration and back and rib pain. He was the only one on board.There was also some damage to the helicopter.Chief Petty Officer David Turner of the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not know the cause of the crash, nor did he know details of the flight plan.There was very thick fog in the area Wednesday, and while Turner did not know if it was a contributing factor to the landing, he said it's difficult to operate in those conditions.Visibility was only a half-mile in the area at the time of the incident with misty conditions in the area."I kept on hearing this helicopter, circling and circling, and after a couple of circles, it didn't sound right to me," said Damian Walsh the man who helped rescue the pilot and took video of the immediate aftermath.Walsh was out on his boat when he says a thick fog quickly rolled in around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon."It turned pretty quickly probably had about 20 yards of visibility," he said.He and another boater rushed to the scene after hearing a loud splash.One coast guard officer told Walsh that the pilot fell 1,000 feet in three seconds.The helicopter fell into shallow water."He was lucky; if he fell 50 yards over, he wouldn't have survived," Walsh said. "I got him on the boat; I called his wife, let her know he was alight."Walsh said he and a couple of other Good Samaritans got him over to rescuers."They wouldn't have found him in that fog. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Two Iranian men are facing federal charges for allegedly masterminding an international computer hacking scheme that used ransomware to extort about ,000 in Bitcoin from Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and also targeted dozens of other victims, including the Port of San Diego, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.Faramarz Shahi Savandi, 34, and Mohammad Mehdi Shah Mansouri, 27, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Newark, New Jersey, for the scheme that caused more than million in losses and allowed the alleged hackers to collect over million in ransom payments, according to the DOJ. The six-count indictment, unsealed Wednesday, alleges that Savandi and Mansouri, acting from inside Iran, authored malware capable of forcibly encrypting data on the computers of more than 200 victims, including Hollywood Presbyterian and the Port of San Diego. The attack had temporary impacts on business services, park permits and public records requests, a port spokeswoman said. Ransomware was used in the attack and included a note requesting payment in Bitcoin. While some of the port's information technology systems were compromised, staff proactively shut down other systems to avoid further problems, the spokeswoman said. In February 2016, Hollywood Presbyterian announced it had paid a ransom of about ,000 in Bitcoin to restore its electronic medical record system after a cyber-attack that crippled its computer system but did not compromise patient care or patient and employee personal information. The attack prevented hospital staff from accessing selected computer systems and blocking electronic communications, medical center officials said. According to prosecutors, starting in December 2015, Savandi and Mansouri allegedly accessed victim computers through security vulnerabilities and installed the SamSam Ransomware. They then allegedly demanded ransom paid in the virtual currency Bitcoin in exchange for decryption keys for the encrypted data, collected payments and exchanged the Bitcoin into Iranian currancy using Iran-based Bitcoin exchangers. Assistant U.S. Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski described the scheme as ``21st-century digital blackmail'' in which the defendants allegedly used ransomware to ``infect the computer networks of municipalities, hospitals, and other key public institutions, locking out the computer owners, and then demanded millions of dollars in payments from them.'' Savandi and Mansouri are charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud and related activity in connection with computers, and two substantive counts each of intentional damage to a protected computer and transmitting a demand in relation to damaging a protected computer. Hancock told lawmakers that officials have identified “a new variant of coronavirus which may be associated with the faster spread in the south of England.” He said so far, about 1,000 cases of the variant have been identified in England, and they have alerted the World Health Organization. The finding comes as video game sales this year have boomed as more people are stuck at home because of the pandemic and many countries have once again imposed limits on public life. The paper released Monday is based on survey responses from people who played two games, Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In a first, the study used data provided by the game makers, Electronic Arts and Nintendo of America, on how much time the respondents spent playing, unlike previous research that relied on imprecise estimates from the players. The researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute said they found the actual amount of time spent playing was a small but significant positive factor in people’s well-being.The paper, which hasn’t been peer reviewed, said the level of enjoyment that players get from a game could be a more important factor for their well-being than mere playing time.The results could cast doubt on long-held assumptions that gaming causes aggression or addiction, though the authors acknowledge they are only a snapshot.“Our findings show video games aren’t necessarily bad for your health; there are other psychological factors which have a significant effect on a persons’ well-being,“ said Andrew Przybylski, the institute’s director of research. “In fact, play can be an activity that relates positively to people’s mental health – and regulating video games could withhold those benefits from players.” 1693
