SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire Department and Bomb Squad responded to a hazmat situation in Kearny Mesa Monday. According to the department, the incident started just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of Balboa Avenue and Ponderosa Avenue near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, workers at Senior Aerospace Jet Products routinely put titanium shavings in barrels. Monday afternoon, one of the barrels, a 55-gallon drum, began to get hot and started expanding. Firefighters arrived at the business and poured water on top of the barrel to cool the contents after evacuating the building. The bomb squad and hazmat technicians were also called to the scene and, after opening the barrel, say the titanium was reacting with another chemical. Shortly before 7 p.m., the area was declared safe and the barrel turned over to the company for proper disposal. 924

 OCEANSIDE (CNS) - An electronic device that can bring down drone aircraft, presumably as they interfere with emergency firefighting planes and police helicopters, has been obtained by Oceanside police, it was reported Saturday.Oceanside police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were among the first police agencies to acquire a "Drone Killer" from IXI Technology, a Yorba Linda company that supplies electronic equipment to the U.S. armed forces, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday. Deputies deployed the anti-drone device at the 2017 Rose Parade.IXI Technology agreed to donate the ,000 drone-incapacitating weapon to Oceanside police and made a presentation to the Oceanside City Council on March 28, the Union-Tribune reported."The purpose is primarily for emergency situations," Oceanside police Lt. Aaron Doyle told the newspaper. "It won't be used when someone complains about a neighbor flying a drone. It's pretty much for a life-or-death situation, to save lives."Drones can force authorities to ground air operations to avoid collisions. That's what happened in December during the Lilac fire, when aerial firefighting had to be called off for more than an hour due to a drone in the area.The device can be pointed at a drone in the air and will cut off communication between it and its operator, the Union-Tribune reported. A drone targeted by the device will either hover in place, return to the place it was launched or simply land, depending on its programming.The device can disable most drone models, IXI Technology's Andy Morabe told the Union-Tribune. When the drone killer encounter's a drone it can't stop, the company plans to rewrite software to remedy the problem within days, Morabe said. 1754

(CNN) -- An atmospheric river is moving to the West Coast, likely to bring menacing flooding, heavy mountain snow, and damaging winds.Atmospheric rivers are narrow corridors of the upper atmosphere that transport intense moisture from a large body of water onto land.Track the latest weather and holiday travel delaysThe Pineapple Express is a specific atmospheric river that originates near Hawaii and travels across the Pacific Ocean to the western coast of North America.Oregon and Washington will see the worst of the stormThursday through Saturday, heavy precipitation will move into Oregon and Washington. Coastal regions will become saturated from very heavy rain, with as much as 4-8 inches expected.The higher elevations of Oregon and California can expect heavy snow, with possible totals of 5-20 inches. Forecasts for the Cascade Mountains in Washington are even higher, with totals expected between 1-3 feet.Ice is also possible for portions of the Hood River Valley Thursday. Accumulations of up to three-tenths of an inch are possible, which could lead to dangerous driving conditions, tree damage, and power outages.Damaging winds up to 60 mph are expected along the coast, with 25-40 mph farther inland.Storm moves into California By the weekend, the system will move south into California, taking the heavy rain to places like San Francisco and Sacramento. The good news is that the system will weaken as it moves south. So, California will not receive as much rain as Oregon and Washington. Most locations in Northern California will pick up at most 1-2 inches of rain."The atmospheric river for the end of the week looks to be an AR1 in the central California coast and northern Washington, but strengthen as high as an AR4 in Central Oregon," explains Anna Wilson, field operations manager for the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CWWWE) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.Atmospheric river events are characterized by a rating scale of 1-5, with Category 1 being a low-end, primarily beneficial event, and a Category 5 being a high-end, primarily hazardous event. This scale, used by the CWWWE, takes into account both intensity and duration.According to the agency, atmospheric river events can sometimes produce 25-50% of the annual precipitation in some western US locations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police believe a University of San Diego professor accused of making threats against fellow professors may have a gun in his possession.Last week, 10News reported on the ordeal unfolding inside USD's Theology and Religious Studies Department: Fliers circulating with three pictures of professors, labeling them "fascists" and urging boycotts of their classes. Versions of the flier with gun cross-hairs were slipped under those professors' doors. 10News has learned two of those professors have filed for restraining orders against fellow professor Louis Komjathy, now suspended by the school.RELATED: Professor accused of threats made against University of San Diego professorsSan Diego Police filed for their own gun violence restraining order to take away any weapons, a request granted by a judge citing "credible information" Komjathy owns one or more firearms, ammunition or magazines. In the restraining order petition, officers say when they asked him about owning a gun, he said, "I do not. Search my apartment and my car if you want."Meanwhile, there are new details about Komjathy's motive for the fliers. Komjathy had been passed over for a promotion, and in the police interview, he reportedly said, "It was supposed to be symbolic representation of having a target on their backs and being singled out. I did not mean to infer violence on anyone ..."The possibility of an actual gun is once again sparking lingering questions raised at a recent student protest, concerns the school didn't notify students in time. The university releasing an email about the fliers about a week after they were first discovered.A spokesperson with the school reissued the following statement: "Our commitment to protecting employee privacy restricts our ability to share further details of an incident that clearly violates university policy and is antithetical to our mission and values. (AP) -- Starbucks is adding plant-based meat to its U.S. menu for the first time.The Seattle-based coffee chain says a breakfast sandwich made with imitation sausage from California-based Impossible Foods is now available at a majority of its U.S. restaurants. The sandwich comes with egg and cheese and is served on a ciabatta bun.Starbucks said earlier this year it would add plant-based meat to its menus worldwide as part of an effort to reduce its environmental impact.In April, it began selling lasagna, pasta and wraps made with Beyond Meat crumbles in China.
