WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden will nominate Pete Buttigieg to be his secretary of transportation, the campaign confirmed on Tuesday.Biden formally introduced Buttigieg as his pick to run the agency at an event on Wednesday. According to Biden, if confirmed, Buttigieg would become the first openly gay person to serve in a cabinet position. In his remarks, Buttigieg said he would strive to improve America's crumbling infrastructure and shared stories of growing up in Indiana with ambitions to be an airline pilot."Travel in my mind is synonymous with growth, with adventure — even love. So much so that I proposed to my husband Chasten in an airport terminal. Don't let anybody tell you that O'Hare isn't romantic," Buttigieg said. At 38, Buttigieg falls under the "millennial" generation and would also be the first person of that generation to serve in the cabinet. As head of the Department of Transportation, the 38-year-old would likely play a large role in accomplishing Biden’s goal of passing a sweeping infrastructure bill, which has been pitched as a major job-creator.“Mayor Pete Buttigieg is a patriot and a problem-solver who speaks to the best of who we are as a nation. I am nominating him for Secretary of Transportation because this position stands at the nexus of so many of the interlocking challenges and opportunities ahead of us. Jobs, infrastructure, equity, and climate all come together at the DOT, the site of some of our most ambitious plans to build back better," Biden said.Buttigieg has already made history. During his recent run for president, he became the first openly gay major party candidate to win delegates. The former presidential candidate helped Biden solidify the Democratic nomination when he dropped out of the race before Super Tuesday and endorsed the former vice president, consolidating the moderate vote against progressive Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.A long criticism of Buttigieg during the campaign was that he didn't have experience in the federal government. Some say this sort of cabinet position could give him the experience to run for the White House again at a later date. 2170

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Joe Biden painted a very different picture of the COVID-19 pandemic than President Donald Trump during his first briefing as the nation's president-elect on Monday. "We are still facing a very dark winter," Biden said after a briefing with his advisers in Delaware. Biden announced a new COVID-19 advisory board. The group will be co-chaired by Dr. David Kessler, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner; Dr. Vivek Murthy, a former surgeon general of the United States; and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, a public health professor at Yale University. "Please wear a mask," Biden implored those watching. WHAT WOULD CHANGE UNDER BIDEN When President-elect Biden takes office, more than just "presidential tone" will change. "They are going to allow the evidence to be back in the driver seat," said Dr. Jon Andrus, an adjunct professor of global health at The George Washington University. Some of the potential changes include: a national mask mandate, more guidance to governors and mayors, increased reliance on international health groups, and more testing and contact tracing. "Lessons learned from many countries, such as those in southeast Asia, show aggressive testing and contracting tracing works," Andrus said. Biden's statement to the media came on the same day Pfizer released promising news about a potential vaccine, saying it 90% effective in some of their trials. 1413

WASHINGTON D.C. — A 17-year-old boy was killed and 20 people were shot, including an off-duty police officer, in Washington D.C. early Sunday morning at a large gathering. The victim was identified as 17-year-old Christopher Brown and police say the off-duty 1st District police officer was shot and is in the hospital fighting for her life.Officers said another 17-year-old was shot and the other victims were all adults and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The police chief said there were multiple shooters and at least 11 of the 20 people shot were women. “There was some kind of a dispute,” said Police Chief Peter Newsham, with the Metropolitan Police Department. “Multiple weapons were produced,” he told reporters. He said a motive for the shooting wasn’t clear. The chief also said they would be talking to building management about the gathering and officers will be looking at whether more could be done to break up the group. At this time, officers believe the gathering started late Saturday night and shots were fired just after midnight. "Sadly, some people who have no regard for human life, opened fire," said Mayor Muriel Bowser, reiterating that drinking and using marijuana in the street is illegal in D.C., as is having a gathering of this size. WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell congratulated Democrat Joe Biden on Tuesday as the president-elect. The Republican leader said the Electoral College “has spoken.” "So, as of this morning, our country has officially a President-elect and a Vice President-elect," McConnell said during comments in the Senate Tuesday morning. "So, today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden." 418

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration’s plan to provide every nursing home with a fast COVID-19 testing machine comes with an asterisk: The government won’t supply enough test kits to check staff and residents beyond an initial couple of rounds. A program that sounded like a game changer when it was announced last month at the White House is now prompting concerns that it could turn into another unfulfilled promise for nursing homes. Residents and staff of nursing homes account for as many as 4 in 10 coronavirus deaths. Administration officials respond that nursing homes can pay for ongoing testing from a billion federal allocation available to them. 674
