(KGTV) - After Monday's arrest in the death of a Carlsbad woman found on a hiking trail, prosecutors must now decide whether to charge the teenage suspect as an adult.A 17-year-old teen from Carlsbad was booked on murder charges weeks after Lisa Thorborg, 68, was found stabbed to death along Hosp Grove Trail.Investigators tell ABC 10News police work led them to the teenager, before DNA evidence confirmed their suspicions. Former District Attorney turned criminal defense attorney Paul Pfingst says prosecutors must now decide whether the accused should be tried as an adult."An adult for a first-degree murder case can receive a 25 years-to-life sentence. A juvenile can only be kept until the age of 25," said Pfingst.A decade ago, Pfingst represented Heather D'Aoust. At the age of 14, she killed her mother with a claw hammer. D'Aoust was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 16 years to life.Pfingst says unlike in that case -- thanks to new state laws -- if prosecutors do charge the 17-year-old as an adult in the Carlsbad case, a judge will have the final say."The more dangerous that person is, they most likely they are to be charged as an adult," said Pfingst.Pfingst says the biggest factor is the crime itself."Is the act is such that it demonstrates such a wanton disregard for life and for people around them that the person needs too be confined?" said Pfingst.Pfingst says the background of the suspect will heavily scrutinized."Including whether they've been involved with gang activity, prior acts of violence, prior acts of rebellion," said Pfingst.Police in the Carlsbad case declined to say if the teen has a criminal history. (AP) — The spacecraft team that brought us close-ups of Pluto will ring in the new year by exploring an even more distant and mysterious world.NASA's New Horizons spacecraft will zip past the scrawny, icy object nicknamed Ultima Thule (TOO-lee) soon after the stroke of midnight.One billion miles beyond Pluto and an astounding 4 billion miles from Earth (1.6 billion kilometers and 6.4 billion kilometers), Ultima Thule will be the farthest world ever explored by humankind. That's what makes this deep-freeze target so enticing; it's a preserved relic dating all the way back to our solar system's origin 4.5 billion years ago. No spacecraft has visited anything so primitive."What could be more exciting than that?" said project scientist Hal Weaver of Johns Hopkins University, part of the New Horizons team.Lead scientist Alan Stern of Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, expects the New Year's encounter to be riskier and more difficult than the rendezvous with Pluto: The spacecraft is older, the target is smaller, the flyby is closer and the distance from us is greater.NEW HORIZONSNASA launched the spacecraft in 2006; it's about the size of a baby grand piano. It flew past Pluto in 2015, providing the first close-up views of the dwarf planet. Good close-up pictures should be available the day after the flyby.ARE WE THERE YET?New Horizons will make its closest approach in the wee hours of Jan. 1 — 12:33 a.m. EST. The spacecraft will zoom within 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) of Ultima Thule, its seven science instruments going full blast. The coast should be clear: Scientists have yet to find any rings or moons around it that could batter the spacecraft. New Horizons hurtles through space at 31,500 mph (50,700 kph), and even something as minuscule as a grain of rice could demolish it. "There's some danger and some suspense," Stern said at a fall meeting of astronomers. It will take about 10 hours to get confirmation that the spacecraft completed — and survived — the encounter.POSSIBLY TWINSScientists speculate Ultima Thule could be two objects closely orbiting one another. If a solo act, it's likely 20 miles (32 kilometers) long at most. Envision a baked potato. "Cucumber, whatever. Pick your favorite vegetable," said astronomer Carey Lisse of Johns Hopkins. It could even be two bodies connected by a neck. If twins, each could be 9 miles to 12 miles (15 kilometers to 20 kilometers) in diameter.MAPPING MISSONScientists will map Ultima Thule every possible way. They anticipate impact craters, possibly also pits and sinkholes, but its surface also could prove to be smooth. As for color, Ultima Thule should be darker than coal, burned by eons of cosmic rays, with a reddish hue. Nothing is certain, though, including its orbit, so big that it takes almost 300 of our Earth years to circle the sun. Scientists say they know just enough about the orbit to intercept it.COMPARING FLYBYSNew Horizons will get considerably closer to Ultima Thule than it did to Pluto: 2,220 miles versus 7,770 miles (3,500 kilometers vs. 12,500 kilometers). At the same time, Ultima Thule is 100 times smaller than Pluto and therefore harder to track, making everything more challenging. It took 4 ? hours, each way, for flight controllers at Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland, to get a message to or from New Horizons at Pluto. Compare that with more than six hours at Ultima Thule.WHAT'S NEXTIt will take almost two years for New Horizons to beam back all its data on Ultima Thule. A flyby of an even more distant world could be in the offing in the 2020s, if NASA approves another mission extension and the spacecraft remains healthy. At the very least, the nuclear-powered New Horizons will continue to observe objects from afar, as it pushes deeper into the Kuiper Belt. (KGTV) - After hundreds of signs and fences along the trails at the Carlsbad Ecological Reserve are ripped from the ground, Fish and Wildlife is now setting up a specialized enforcement team. Secret cameras set up around the 500 acre reserve caught dozens of bikers ripping up signs, cutting fence wire and vandalizing property.Fish and Wildlife representative Peter Tira told 10News this is nothing new."We're not dealing with recreational mountain bikers, we're dealing with folks who disregard the law and believe the law doesn't apply to them," said Tira.Starting Saturday, April 6, Fish and Wildlife enforcement officers will hand out citations to all bikers who are caught riding the trails. Each citation comes with a 0 fine. "We've installed about 500 signs on this property almost all of which have been taken down or vandalized. On each of the signs it says 'No Bicycles'," said Tira.However, many mountain bikers who showed up to the trails Wednesday told 10News this is a popular spot for many in the Carlsbad area. Ivan Sekanovich comes to ride these trails at least once a week and is disappointed that Fish and Wildlife are letting the actions of a small group of bikers ruin it for the rest of them."For the most part, people know where they're supposed to hike and the bikers know where to bike," Sekanovich said. 1358

"You know that’s like every Black kid’s dream growing up, wanting to be a basketball player, until you realize your dreams ain’t gonna work but. Ya know, that’s always been one of my favorite things to do.”He realized that dream would never be a reality when he was a teenager.“I was 17. I was incarcerated for nine years in prison.”Brown grew up in a neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Some call it the city’s murder capital with more homicides being committed there than any other neighborhood in the city.“When we young, we really didn’t have nobody positive to look up to. The person with the nice car, that was the one selling drugs. He was doing all the illegal stuff,” Brown said.He says owning a gun to use, or simply protect yourself, is basically expected in a community with illegal activity. Brown says he’s lost a lot of family and friends to gun violence. He points to the tattoos on his arms of lost loved ones:“These is like my cousins and friends that died. Best friend, Bert. Bud, he was like my uncle. Frut, he was one of my closest. And the rest of them are like my cousins: DJ, Aaron, Yak, Von, TG, Low, Dome, Devin, Lil Mike.”After being released from prison, Brown says he struggled to get on his feet until he got involved with an organization called READI. He says he needed a bit of a push to commit to a change in his life. Thankfully, persistence paid off.“My outreach worker came ringing my doorbell, asking my momma where I was at,” Brown said.Now he is a READI participant. According to Community Project Manager Kimeco Roberson, READI is an innovative evidence-based response to reducing gun violence in Chicago.“A lot of the shootings that are happening are coming from specific communities and a specific targeted group of people, or a specific group of people within those communities, and that small number of people have contributed to a large percentage of violence that has taken place across the city,” Roberson said.Across the country, especially in cities, Roberson says people of color are marginalized in communities that have experienced decades of trauma.“Trauma happens in the brain. Trauma can be healed. So a part of that healing process is our cognitive-behavioral therapy.”Roberson says one key to helping these men is through relationships. READI offers rigorous cognitive-behavioral therapy mixed with job training and career readiness.Speaking from experience, Brown says READI has found a successful way to make a difference in people’s lives.“I’m doing better through READI already. Like that’s a consistent check for me every week and I got somewhere to go,” Brown said.He may not be a pro basketball player, but he can be a positive role model in the years to come for his four-month-old son.“I’mma show him like, ‘you don’t got to do this, you ain’t got to do what I did, you don’t have to sit in jail for nine years for gun violence, you don’t have to have a bad juvenile background'.
