A frightening bank scam now allows thieves to get right into your checking account, and even savvy people are falling for it.All they need is:Your cellphone numberA bank account that is compatible with the Zelle money transfer system.You assuming that it's really your bank on the phoneIt just happened to one man in Ohio, who showed how thieves can now con their way into getting thousands of dollars from your checking account.Damon Lander runs a university biology lab. As a university employee, he's not the type of person who would fall for a phone scam — until this one."The other evening, I got a phone call from what I thought was Fifth Third Bank," he said.With his caller ID showing his bank's number, Lander answered the phone, and immediately worried when the caller explained he was with the bank's fraud department."He told me they had detected fraud in my account, and they were going to help me take care of that, and set up security measures, and take care of the fraudulent charge," Lander said.It all sounded perfectly legitimate. So he did what the phone rep instructed, such as entering a verification code on the log-in page on the bank's app.The caller promised to lock the account, and issue him a new debit card. Lander thought everything was taken care of.But within a few minutes, Lander says, he got a strange text from the bank."My user ID had been removed," he said.A few minutes later, he got more alerts from the bank, and that's when he really started to worry."They changed my username, my password, my card PIN and set up a Zelle account."Scammers open Zelle accountLander had never used Zelle before, but it is a money transfer app similar to Venmo that is automatically offered to customers at almost a dozen big banks around the country, including Bank of America, Key Bank, Chase and Fifth Third.Suddenly, Lander watched helplessly as another text alerted him that his brand new Zelle account sent ,000 to a disposable cellphone number."They transferred funds to someone I've never met before," he said,Panicking, he called the bank's customer service number, where he learned the bank had not initiated any fraud call.In fact, to Fifth Third, it appeared that he had made all the changes to his account since he entered a verification code that essentially gave the keys to his account to a scammer.Why this scam is so worrisomeWhat's scary is that this scam doesn't require a thief to gain access to your ATM card or a blank check they found somewhere, as bank theft required in the past.All it takes is a text or call claiming to be from your bank's "fraud department" and they can get into your account. A figure skater has filed a lawsuit accusing longtime US Figure Skating coach Richard Callaghan of sexually abusing him for approximately two years, beginning when he was about 14.The lawsuit, filed in San Diego court, alleges Callaghan sexually molested figure skater Adam Schmidt repeatedly between 1999 and 2001, both while coaching the then-teen and later at a competition in San Diego. Schmidt, now 34, is a former member of the US National Figure Skating Team, his lawyers said.The abuse continued, the lawsuit says, despite the fact a 1999 New York Times article revealed allegations of sexual misconduct by Callaghan with another figure skater. The coach remained "in good-standing" with the US Figure Skating Association, which was aware of allegation by the alleged victim, but dismissed it, the lawsuit alleges.Callaghan was also an employee at an ice skating rink in Rochester, Michigan, the lawsuit says, where he was allowed to continue coaching minors, and where he allegedly abused Schmidt."While performing these duties, (Callaghan) violated his role as a coach, sexually violated the Plaintiff, and used his position of authority and power over the Plaintiff," the lawsuit alleges.The US Figure Skating Association and a Michigan ice skating center are also identified as defendants in the lawsuit. Additional defendants are unknown individuals and corporations.The lawsuit claims that as a result of the abuse, Schmidt suffered anxiety, depression, fear, grief and stress. He suffered a mental breakdown and was subsequently hospitalized in January 2017, the lawsuit says, when he first shared his account of sexual abuse with a mental health professional."Our client is an extremely talented young athlete who dreamed of nothing more than to stand on an Olympic podium and hear our National Anthem," John Manly, Schmidt's attorney, said in a news release. "Instead, he had to stop competing in the sport he loved because of the sexual, physical and emotional damage done to him by his coach, Richard Callaghan."The lawsuit seeks damages on 10 counts, including alleged sexual battery and assault by Callaghan, and negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress on the part of all defendants.Referring to the US Figure Skating Association and ice rinks where Callaghan worked, Manly said, "If they had done their legal duty in 1999 and reported Callaghan to the police, our client and other children could have been protected from this monster."Dean Groulx, an attorney for Callaghan, told CNN in a statement that he had not received the lawsuit and was unaware of Schmidt's allegations."However," Groulx said, "Richard Callaghan denies all wrongdoing at any time. A Cincinnati police officer outed an undercover colleague to the nightclub owner under investigation and concealed ,000 in off-duty income from the IRS, according to federal prosecutors.Quianna Campbell, 39, was arrested Friday. She stands charged with lying to federal agents and submitting false tax returns.According to the criminal complaint filed against Campbell in United States District Court, federal agents first became aware of her during a 2015 investigation into Cincinnati nightclubs’ potential involvement in organized drug trafficking and money-laundering. “During the course of this investigation, information was received that individuals associated with nightclubs had been or were currently being warned of police activities and were in essence being tipped off and possibly protected by members of the Cincinnati Police Department,” an IRS investigator wrote. Investigators later uncovered text messages in which a nightclub owner texted Campbell to ask about a specific person who had visited the club. “She’s an officer….” Campbell wrote back. She also discussed possible reasons police would be investigating the club, writing: “They work on random nights and go into different bars. He was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, where doctors determined that Zhu's spinal cord was fractured, and he was declared medically brain-dead three days later, court documents say.Zhu's parents, Yongmin and Monica Zhu of Concord, California, filed a petition Friday morning, pleading with the court to allow the hospital to proceed with a sperm retrieval procedure on their son's body.He always wanted to live on a ranch and raise a family and have horses, his parents say in in their petition.More than his wishes to become a father, Peter is the only male child to continue the Zhu family lineage.
