Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon has pulled out of a job as a correspondent for NBC at the Winter Games in South Korea.News broke earlier Sunday that Rippon, one of the first openly gay U.S. athletes to compete at the Olympics, was being hired to work on TV, digital and social media for NBC for the remainder of the Games in Pyeongchang.NBC tweeted out the news Sunday morning, welcoming the 28-year-old bronze medalist to its team.But Rippon said hours later that although he was "so flattered" by NBC's offer, he decided against the move because it would mean leaving his U.S. teammates and the Olympic Village."It's so important to me, you know, I worked so hard to be on this Olympic team, and my teammates and my friends were there for me during my events, and that meant so much to me, that I really feel like I need to be there for them during their events," he said on NBCSN.NBC's article online about Rippon becoming one of its correspondents now redirects readers to his Olympic profile page.Rippon later suggested he only learned about the network's plans to hire him from social media."I actually found everything out about the offer via twitter HAHA," he tweeted. On World Autism Awareness Day, Monday, April 2, Pennsylvania theme park Sesame Place announced that it was the first theme park in the world to complete training to become a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The park's certification was granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). IBCCES says that Sesame Place is "the first theme park in the world to receive such a distinction."Sesame Place is located at 100 Sesame Road in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The park features rides, shows, parades, and full size characters and opens for the season on April 28 at 10:00 a.m.The Sesame team members were trained in sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview, program development, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness, so that staff members can cater to all guests who visit the park.One of the most helpful outcomes of this certification is the IBCCES?Sensory Guide, which breaks down each of the rides' stimuli. This guide grades the rides in terms of touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight stimulation. The senses are scored from 1, which is a low stimulation, to 10, which is a high stimulation.The park has quiet rooms for guests needing to recover from sensory stimulation from the rides. They also have noise-canceling headphones, or WhispEars, on a first come, first served basis for guests with hearing sensitivity. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside city officials are asking for developers to submit their bids to create an "iconic" downtown sign for the city, similar to areas of the county like the Gaslamp District, North Park, and Escondido.The city's request for proposals calls for a sign that will act as a new landmark and "the heart of the Sunset Market" at the intersection of Tremont Street and Pier View Way.The sign must be an "over-the-road" style sign that spans the intersection and aims to, "create a 'place' that locals and visitors are invited to enjoy for decades to come," the city says.Candidates can submit an initial design by January 13, 2021. The top five candidates will be granted ,000 and four weeks to flesh out their designs, budget, and other aspects. The city's Property and Business Improvement District will then choose the best three to go before a public vote. Only a handful of states have adopted a "contact tracing app" to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. In the Dakotas, the developer of the "Care19" app says his technology is available for other states too.Before COVID-19 was on anyone's radar, Tim Brookins, an alumnus of North Dakota State University, built something called the "Bison Tracker App." It tracked fans on their way to the football’s National Championship Game in Dallas in January“Literally this last year, we tracked 15,000 people so you can see 15,000 dots drive south over the week and then drive home when it’s done,” Brookins said. “People when they’re driving have nothing else to do they do nothing but check this thing to watch the migration of green dots across the map.”Brookins works for Microsoft. When the pandemic hit, the company told employees they could use their technology expertise to help their hometowns. So Brookins reached out North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.“He was initially saying we need to get contact tracing and a key part is remembering where you’ve been and oh by the way with Bison Tracker, Tim, you know how to collect people’s location, right?” Brookins said.And so, the Bison Tracker technology morphed into Care19.“It’s a key part of the contact tracing process to remember where you were over the last week or so and that’s hard to do when you’re feeling well, let alone if you’re feeling sick or frightened or stressed,” Brookins said.The app records where you go, and makes a list for the past 14 days. That way, if you test positive, you can help contact tracers trace where you went, who you talked to, who you've possibly infected.Jensa Woo, a librarian with San Francisco Public enlisted with the California Department of Public Health as a contact tracer. Woo registered after her library system closed during the spread of the virus.“I’ll talk with the contact and then the Department of Public Health recommendation is that they go get tested, if they test positive then there’s a follow up. A ripple effect but it starts with whether or not the person tests positive,” Woo said.Woo has talked to people as young as 11. California doesn't use an app instead, health officers say, their health workers have used contact tracers for decades to slow the spread of infectious disease like measles, SARS, and HIV/AIDS. Woo does all of her work from home, doesn't come into contact with anyone -physically.“It’s kind of tracing things out and being methodical in trying to figure out where has that virus gone and where are people in a place to isolate and stop so that virus doesn’t affect other people,” Woo said.Brookins says his app technology is already loaded for two states, North and South Dakota. It wouldn't be hard to add another state; he's in talks with some, and with universities.“There are a lot of states out there who are just so busy with their human tracing they haven’t come up for air to even consider doing an app since it’s an add on to their existing process,” Brookings said.When asked about the critiques of this type of technology and if people’s every move will be watched and recorded, Brookins said states don't have access to the data. In fact, only he does- and at that, all he's got is coordinates. No names.“If you want data that’s valuable, do something like Facebook. They have your email they know your city, what high school you went to, if you’re in a relationship and they have a billion users. that’s valuable,” Brookings said. “This data that’s completely anonymous isn’t even sale-able.”As for Woo, she says she's learned a lot and loves reaching out and helping people in the community. She misses the library and the books, but this is a close second.“It kind of comes second nature to interview people and to listen well and to ask good questions and open ended questions while I’m putting information in - so multi-tasking,” woo said. 3900

One day after 17 lives were taken during a school shooting in Florida, a grandmother in Everett, Washington was given credit on Thursday for foiling a planned school shooting, according to a police press release. According to the press release released on Thursday, the grandmother of 18-year-old high school student Joshua Alexander O'Connor called 911 after finding O'Connor's journal that allegedly detailed plans to kill classmates. After the grandmother showed law enforcement the journal, O'Connor was arrested on Tuesday for attempted murder. Police said detectives seized O’Connor’s journal, inert grenades, a cellular phone and a High Point 9 mm carbine rifle following a search warrant. “This is a case where the adage ‘see something, say something’ potentially saved many lives,” said Everett Police Chief Dan Templeman. “It is critically important for community members, to include students and parents, to remain observant and immediately report odd or suspicious behaviors with our children or with fellow students. We were fortunate that a family member believed there were credible threats and contacted law enforcement for further investigation. I’m sure the decision was difficult to make, but fortunately, it was the correct one.”O'Connor's bail has been set at million. O'Connor is a student at ACES High School in Everett.
