CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — The Dooley family woke up Wednesday morning to some deflated holiday joy outside their home on Highland Drive."A lot of sadness. It really broke our heart, " said homeowner Gavin Dooley.A check of the surveillance video revealed the culprit. Just before 3 a.m., a black SUV pulls up next to their home, as someone emerges from the passenger side and climbs over their four-foot gate. Moments later, the person throws himself onto a large inflatable of a Santa and his fish taco truck.The scrooge tore through their yard, destroying all of their giant Christmas inflatables."Must have had a good pop on the first one. Second one, he jumps on it twice," said Dooley.That inflatable was a 9-foot tall television, reflecting the images of a projector from the movie "A Christmas Story." The vandal then tackles the final inflatable, which sported North Pole penguins.The end result: 0 dollars worth of inflatables destroyed."Pretty unrepairable. Just like a balloon, they’re popped. There's a huge tear in them," said Dooley.Dooley, who has three children, says his youngest -- his 9-year-old son -- was the most distraught.Also dismayed, some neighbors who bring their toddler girl to see the inflatables every day. That morning, she was nearly in tears."She kept saying, 'Porque? Why? Why would they do this?'" said Dooley.It’s a question Dooley has asked himself. Why? And why at the end of a tough year when holiday cheer is so needed."We were hoping Christmas decorations would bring a lot of joy to people. This turns that joy into sadness," said Dooley.Dooley would like to put up some smaller inflatables but is worried they could also be targeted.The family has filed a police report. (KGTV) – The Legoland Hotel in Carlsbad is set to reopen before the theme park.Legoland California officials said the hotel, located on the same grounds as the Legoland theme park, will reopen to the public on Friday, July 17.With the reopening of the hotel, officials confirmed there will be numerous health and safety modifications in place such as social distancing practices and enhanced cleaning regimes.Legoland Hotel will operate in a reduced capacity, take cashless payments, and have a face coverings requirement for all guests three years of age and over. Hotel staff will also be required to don face coverings.Officials said those interested in staying at the hotel should book reservations online.The announcement of the hotel's reopening comes a week after officials said the Legoland theme park, which was shut down in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, would not reopen prior to Aug. 1.A reopening date for the theme park has not yet been determined. 992

(KGTV) - Instead of planning for a wedding, loved ones of a Camp Pendleton marine were holding a funeral this Memorial Day weekend.From the moment Kathleen Bourque met Conor McDowell off a dating app last summer in Washington D.C., it was electric."Insane, crazy, passionate ... He has a huge heart and always puts others before himself, and I was really drawn to that," said Kathleen.Four days later, the graduate of The Citadel asked her to move to San Diego as he reported for duty at Camp Pendleton. She said yes. During the cross-country trip, she wondered aloud, 'What are we doing?'""He said, 'Kathleen, trust is a choice ... We're both insane, but at least we're insane together, and give them something to talk about," said Kathleen.Together, they moved into an apartment in Cardiff and their love grew. Just before Conor, 24, left for a 10-day training maneuver earlier this month, he called his mother and told her the engagement ring made with grandma's diamond's was almost ready."He said,'When I return from maneuvers, I'm going to formally propose to Kathleen, I said that's so wonderful,'" said Susan Flanigan, Conor's mother. That proposal would never happen. During an exercise at Camp Pendleton on May 9th, the light armored reconnaissance vehicle he was riding in flipper over, injuring six other Marines and killing Conor.Conor's father, Michael McDonwell, says his son pushed another Marine into the vehicle to safety but couldn't save himself."It's devastating ... He was a person who lived his life to the fullest with great kindness, love and integrity," said Flanigan."I am shattered. My heart has been ripped out of my chest. I was his life and he was mine. I have lost a part of myself in losing him," said Kathleen.This weekend, loved ones held a funeral in Conor's hometown in Maryland. The bagpipes he had wanted for his wedding played instead at his service."He was the strongest person I knew. He taught me how to find the strength I didn't know I even had," said Kathleen.A memorial will be held at Camp Pendleton in early June, before a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. CAPE YORK, Australia – Australian scientists say they’ve discovered a massive new coral reef that’s taller than the Empire State Building.The scientists were aboard a research vessel exploring the sea when they found the detached structure in the Great Barrier Reef last week, according to a press release from the Schmidt Ocean Institute.The institute says the “blade-like” reef is the first to be discovered in over 120 years.On Sunday, the institute’s team conducted a dive using an underwater robot to explore the new reef and learned that it's more than 500 meters high, the base is about 1.5 kilometers wide and it rises to its shallowest depth of only 40 meters below the sea surface.The newly discovered reef adds to the seven other tall detached reefs found in the area since the late 1800s.“This unexpected discovery affirms that we continue to find unknown structures and new species in our ocean,” said Wendy Schmidt, co-founder of Schmidt Ocean Institute. “The state of our knowledge about what’s in the ocean has long been so limited. Thanks to new technologies that work as our eyes, ears and hands in the deep ocean, we have the capacity to explore like never before. New oceanscapes are opening to us, revealing the ecosystems and diverse life forms that share the planet with us.”This isn’t the institute’s first big discovery of the year, though.
