SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As more people went back to work last month, the region's unemployment dropped to 13.9% in June, 1.3% lower than the previous month, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.The coronavirus and its related job loss still looms large over the economy even as some industries begin to resume business. The state's unemployment rate dropped to 15.1% in June, while nationally, the rate decreased to 11.2% in the same time period. Arts, entertainment and recreation added 4,800 jobs.The trade, transportation and utilities sector logged 9,500 jobs gained month-over-month, the largest portion of which was in clothing and clothing accessories stores, with 3,900 added jobs.Construction gained 4,100, educational and health services 2,800, other services 2,200, manufacturing 1,900, professional and business services 1,600, financial activities 900 and information 200.Mining and logging employment did not show any gains or losses.The only industry to lose jobs was the government sector, which lost 3,900 jobs in June.Comparing year-over-year, the San Diego region lost 153,600 non-farm jobs and 800 agricultural jobs. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Citing the potential risks of sexual and physical abuse to children, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan today urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to consider allowing county school districts to make their own determinations regarding reopening in advance of a Tuesday decision that could send the county to the most restrictive tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap.In a letter sent Monday to Newsom, Stephan said there has been ``a drastic increase in child predatory behavior on the internet'' with children out of school and teachers unable to ``be the eyes and ears of law enforcement'' to report suspected abuse among their students.Local reports to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled since schools were shuttered due to the pandemic, and that similar increases have been seen nationwide, Stephan said. Stephan also said domestic violence reports have increased since stay- at-home orders were issued, and that Rady Children's Hospital has seen an increase in ``consult cases,'' in which cases of suspected child abuse are reported by physicians.Stephan's letter was sent in advance of Newsom's Tuesday decision regarding San Diego County's COVID-19 category status, when the county could potentially slide into the ``Purple Tier,'' meaning many schools could not open for in-person learning.``When evaluating the health of our children and our community, we must consider the effects of COVID-19, but also acknowledge and weigh the other real and potentially more life-threatening threat from violence and exploitation of children,'' Stephan said.``This is the public safety lens that I sincerely hope you will consider.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of opening fire inside a Poway synagogue, killing a woman and injuring three other people, pleaded not guilty today to more than 100 federal hate crime charges alleging he acted out of hatred toward the Jewish and Muslim communities.John T. Earnest, 19, is accused not only of the synagogue shooting but also of an earlier arson fire at an Escondido mosque. He is being charged by both federal and state prosecutors and faces a possible death sentence in both cases. Neither office has made a decision regarding whether they will pursue the death penalty.Earnest, of Rancho Penasquitos, is accused of carrying out the shooting at Chabad of Poway on April 27 -- the last day of Passover -- killing Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who was shot twice in the synagogue's foyer and died at a hospital.The congregation's rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein, 57, lost an index finger in the shooting. Two other people -- Almog Peretz, 34, and his 8-year-old niece, Noya Dahan -- were also injured.Earnest is also accused of setting a March 24 fire at an Escondido mosque -- a crime to which Earnest allegedly confessed in an online manifesto he posted prior to the synagogue shooting.Following his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon, he's slated to return to court May 28 for a preliminary hearing. He remains held without bail.He was charged last Thursday with 109 federal hate crimes: -- 54 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs using a dangerous weapon, resulting in death, bodily injury and attempts to kill; -- 54 counts of hate crimes stemming from the synagogue shooting in violation of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act; and -- one count of damage to religious property by use of fire.Each of the 54 hate crime and obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs counts apply to a person who was inside the synagogue during the shooting, Brewer said. Among those people, 12 of the congregants present were children, he said.Earnest is due back in federal court May 28.Earnest is also charged in state court with murder, attempted murder and arson. He wrote that he spent four weeks planning the attack, citing his ``disgust'' for Jews and a desire to kill them, and expressed admiration for the Australian white nationalist who attacked two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March, killing 50 people.The writer also claims responsibility for the March 24 fire set at the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque, also known as Islamic Center of Escondido. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman died Monday after being injured Sunday when she was hit by a car in Rancho Penasquitos, police said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner says Nang Arm, 37, died after she was taken off life support Monday. Medics responded to a call at 7:07 a.m. Sunday on Black Mountain Road and Carmel Mountain Road, where they found an unconscious woman with face injuries, San Diego police Sgt. Robert Hawkins said.A gold-colored 2006 Nissan Sentra driven by 20-year-old Uvelyn Nunez- Jaramillo and carrying two passengers, was heading south on the 13700 block of Black Mountain Road when the car veered to the right, SDPD Sgt. Tim Underwood said.The car went onto a sidewalk, damaged a fence, then struck the Nang. She was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, Hawlins said.The car continued a short distance down the street, where it also hit a water line before it came to a stop. Nunez-Jaramillo exited the Nissan and walked away.Several passersby stopped at the scene to render aid to the woman and emergency personnel, Underwood said.Detectives determined that Nunez-Jaramillo caused the crash. She was contacted and returned to the scene, where police determined she allegedly was driving under the influence.She was arrested and booked in the Las Colinas Women's Detention Facility for felony driving under the influence and felony hit and run.Detectives also interviewed Nunez-Jaramillo's two passengers, who were released, Underwood said. 1468
