SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The beloved founder of the popular Roberto's Taco Shop chain which began in San Diego died last week, according to the company.Dolores Robledo, 90, died on July 14, the company said in a release. Robledo opened the first Roberto's Taco Shop — and San Diego's first taco shop — with her husband, Roberto, in 1964, according to the company. Prior to that, the couple started their food career providing tortillas to stores and restaurants from their San Ysidro tortilla factory."Since then, Sra. Dolores had been sharing her love for family and authenticity through each meal served," the company said in a release. "She has left the legacy of her love and perseverance. The way she touched lives will remain ongoing. Dolores Robledo will be deeply missed. Please keep her family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time."Robledo was the mother to 13 children and had 39 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. In 1990, Roberto moved to Las Vegas and soon after decided to open his first taco shop in Las Vegas. With the help of her family, Roberto's expanded to 60 locations across California and Nevada.The Roberto's chain is believed to have started the variety of other eateries with the "berto's" suffix in San Diego. It's long-rumored that the famed California Burrito was created at one of these "berto's" shops, but which shop can claim that title continues to be debated.On Instagram, the company continued: "Sra. Dolores Robledo, founder of Roberto's Taco Shop, loved cooking good Mexican food for her family and friends. She and her family expressed that passion by opening their first Roberto's Taco Shop in San Diego in 1964. She will be missed but her legacy of cooking fine Mexican dishes will continue for generations to come."Visitation services for Robledo will be held at 4 p.m. on July 29 at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The heads of several of California's major theme parks voiced their disapproval on Wednesday with California's recently release theme park guidance. Any open theme parks must implement a reservations system, screen guests for COVID-19 symptoms, and require face coverings throughout the park unless eating or drinking.In a statement Wednesday, Dr. Mark Ghaly, California Health and Human Services Secretary, said the rules are intentionally slow and stringent to stop the coronavirus spread."Theme parks are a high-risk setting where large scale, random mixing occurs. Theme parks draw regional, national and international attendees that may spend days mixing with others outside their own household," said Ghaly. "The state's public health guidelines have always been driven by data and science. This will continue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man who was convicted of driving drunk when he hit a Lyft car, killing the driver, was sentenced in court Thursday.Steven Quintero was sentenced to 16 years in prison following an emotional day in court in which three young women in the car at the time of the crash and the victim’s sister all gave statements. “The worst part of my story is that I remember every detail of the crash," said Kelly Hoffman with a shaky voice. "I am haunted by the memory of the violent, powerful impact and the sound of the bending metal and shattering glass," she added.A jury convicted Quintero of DUI causing injury, hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license in the crash that killed Henry Reyes along State Route 94 just east of downtown San Diego.RELATED: Driver who hit and killed Lyft driver in 2016 faces retrialThe crash happened on October 1, 2016. Reyes pulled over on the side of the road when one of the passengers inside the Lyft, Sarah Smith, got sick.When Reyes pulled over, he got out to help Smith out of the car and get her water. While walking around the front of the car to get back in, the Lyft was struck from behind, killing Reyes.Smith, Hoffman and Jessica Techel all suffered major injuries in the crash. “When I see photos of the car I am reminded that I’m lucky to be alive, have all my limbs and my mental capacity," Techel told the court.Reyes' sister brought photos of her brother to court. In one of them, he was with his 2-year-old son. Evette Rous testified how important her brother was to her and her family.  He gave her away at her wedding, and was always around with a sarcastic comment for his sister. She said her life is forever changed. “When Steven Quintero made the decision to drink and drive, he not only killed my brother, he killed a part of each of us who lived Henry. He killed dreams, and memories yet to be made," she said.Rous said her mother didn't come to court because she felt there was no justice for Henry Reyes.  The victims all testified they were disappointed when two different juries failed to convict Quintero of murder.  In exchange for not trying Quintero a third time, he agreed to go to prison for 16 years, without the possibility of probation.  Quintero also agreed not to appeal his case.Quintero did not address or even look at his victims as they spoke.  His attorney told them he apologizes for his actions and is filled with remourse.Rous called the apology an insult.The 2016 crash wasn’t the first time Quintero was found to be driving under the influence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The biggest auto theft scheme in San Diego history has come to an end. District Attorney Summer Stephen announced Thursday that more than 100 vehicles were stolen though identity theft and fraud dating back to 2016. Investigators say the ringleader, 34-year-old Bryan Orr, created shell companies and used more than 20 co-conspirators to help him steal cars using identity theft and fraud. The items stolen ranged from high-end luxury vehicles to RVs and jet skis. "They would create fake lines of credit, fake credit histories, fake documents so that they could use it in their schemes," said CHP Captain James Portilla. "He would create fake websites so if an institution wanted to verify info on a loan application they would look like there was a legit business."In one scam, a straw buyer would purchase and finance a new vehicle. Thereafter, the auto loan would be paid in full by other co-conspirators. Once the title to the vehicle was sent to the purchaser, the vehicle would be immediately re-sold. Once the sale proceeds were secured, the individuals who made the payments would falsely report the fraudulent use of their bank accounts, leading financial institutions to refund the payments that had been made on the vehicles. Immediately the funds were withdrawn and passed on to Orr, investigators said.“As newer vehicles become equipped with effective anti-theft technologies, traditional methods of stealing vehicles are not as effective,” said Portilla, “As a result, we have seen an increase in vehicle theft using a variety of fraud schemes.”Another fraudulent scheme involved the purchase or return of “merchandise” between the various shell companies. Once the seller withdrew the proceeds from the transaction, the buyer would dispute the purchase and receive a provisional credit from the bank. Similar to the vehicle purchase scheme, upon receipt of the refund, the funds would be withdrawn immediately or used to make fraudulent purchases with other “shell companies.” Orr used the shell companies to steal in excess of .5 million from banks during this time period, prosecutors said.Orr has no criminal history and is still in custody on million bail. If convicted, he may face up to 100 years in prison.While 21 people face charges, six of them are still wanted in this case. 2334

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Drug Enforcement Agency launched a summer project drilling down on factors leading to violent crime across the nation. It is called Project Safeguard.Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego district, John Callery, said, "over 75% of those [violent] crimes are driven to get money to buy drugs."He said drugs and crime go hand in hand. "When a person devolves into a drug addict unfortunately they become very desperate right? And a desperate person will do desperate things to get money and buy drugs."Callery said his team geared up to knock out 15 cases with violent criminals. The arrests happened from August to October."We took a three month, for lack of a better word, a surge. Let’s get violent actors off the street. Let’s arrest them, DEA, and let’s charge them federally." Callery said they arrested 34 criminals.He added they have a lot of evidence to go through as well, "we’ve seized 71 firearms and... seized 160 kilograms of heroin and 160 kilograms of fentanyl."He hopes the arrests lead to hundreds more and reveal kingpins in the Mexican Drug Cartels."We’re a border town and we have a huge responsibility here to try and stop drugs from entering the United States because 75% of all drugs enter right here in our area and go to the rest of the United States." Callery said he is incredibly proud of his teamHe said five agents were infected with the novel coronavirus since March and have recovered. He said they haven't stopped working through the pandemic.Callery said his next big task is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24th.
