PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bill Cosby's lawyers are arguing in a new appeals filing that it was “fundamentally unfair” to let prosecutors use Cosby's damaging deposition from a sex accuser's lawsuit against him at trial. The filing made Tuesday largely focuses on what Cosby believes was a binding promise from a district attorney that he wouldn't be charged in the case. A spokeswoman for the Montgomery County district attorney's office isn't commenting but says prosecutors will file a response within a month. OTAY MESA, Calif., (KGTV) — Thursday's Caliente Fire turned into a massive blaze at a pallet yard in Otay Mesa, a fire that has burned nearly 500 acres.The business owners returned to the yard Friday to find devastation, as the blaze remained 75% contained.This is not a dream. The life that Francisco and Carolina Ramirez built is now gone. "You're hoping that it will you will wake up in the morning and go back as usual. It was an effort to help Mother Nature. But on Thursday, it was Mother Nature that destroyed their business, Atlas Wood Pallets. "It's like we've been into a war. And then after that, we only see ashes," Ramirez said. Ramirez says his yard was a small city made of 60,000 pallets. But 99.9% of his inventory is now ash. The 8-foot loading dock is now a swimming pool of dirt. And what seemed to be a lifetime supply of nail gun nails are now unusable. INTERACTIVE MAP: Where the Caliente Fire burnedRamirez admits, he did not think it would get this bad. "Far away, we saw that the little fire started, and then a fire truck was nearby, so at that point I thought everything was under control," Ramirez said. But the topography of the canyon and the sudden gusts caused the flames to zig-zag straight to their yard. "The canyon has a different amount of fuel, so you get a change in the fuel. PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The loss of Hannah Ernst’s grandfather, Cal Schoenfeld, is still very fresh in her mind."He was one in a million," she said when describing him. "He had a heart of gold and his smile was beyond anything."It was on May 8 when the family’s patriarch lost a month-long battle with COVID-19.The loss was devastating to the Parsippany family, all happening at the height of the COVID-19 crisis in New Jersey."There was a lot of panic, a lot of pandemonium," she said.A time of mourning soon turned into a moment of inspiration for the 15-year-old, who created a digital portrait to honor her grandfather."I was just really messing on my iPad," Ernst explained. "I’ve seen something similar where you make silhouettes of people but I thought how cool would it be if someone put the yellow heart, which is the symbol of COVID, in the back of them."The creative and powerful tribute was later posted by the teen’s mom in a COVID-19 support group on Facebook which then led to others inquiring about getting their loved ones memorialized.Her “Faces of Covid” project then materialized and 325 portraits later, Ernst says she’s just getting started."I think they felt a part of something," she said, referring to what her portraits brought to families. PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Two sets of sisters graduated Marine Corps recruit training together, further strengthening their bonds.The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in Parris Island, South Carolina, says one set includes Virginia sisters Ashley and Amber Valentine, while the other is comprised of Maria, Vanessa and Melissa Placido Jaramillo, who grew up in Nevada.According to MCRD, the Valentine sisters joined shortly after their grandfather passed away and wanted to carry on his legacy in the U.S. armed services.Ashley, 19, and Amber, 22, say having each other to rely on through training helped during some of their highest highs and lowest lows.“I went through a moment during first phase where I received some bad news in a letter, and she was there to be a shoulder for me to lean on,” Amber said in a press release posted to MCRD’s Facebook page.However, the Valentines won’t be attending combat training together, because Ashley suffered a hip fracture prior to graduation and must heal. After combat training, Amber plans to serve in the communications field and Ashley will be certified as a motor transportation operator.As for the Placido Jaramillo family, Maria, Vanessa and Melissa made a pact to join the military together when they were young children, according to MCRD. Melissa and Vanessa, both 22, are identical twins. Maria is a year younger than them at age 21.During recruit training, Melissa says the sisters succeeded thanks to friendly competition and daily positive affirmation.MCRD says the three sisters have yet to find out what military occupational specialty they will be assigned but are looking forward to what the Marine Corps has in store for them. Police in Northern California say a nurse driving home from her shift at a hospital was assaulted after she encountered a group of protesters who say she intentionally drove into the crowd. Santa Rosa police say they are investigating but add that video evidence does not show that the woman purposely drove into about 100 people marching Saturday night. The woman told officers she was punched in the face by a man who followed her after she drove away from a “swarm” of people blocking her vehicle. Protesters initially said a teenager on a bicycle had been injured but no victims have come forward to police."SRPD officers met with several protesters who believed that the driver of the SUV intentionally drove through the crowd. There was some discrepancy as to how fast the vehicle was driving. Several protesters provided video footage of the incident to the officers on scene," police said in a statement. "The videos show the protesters taking over all lanes of traffic on Sonoma Avenue, heading eastbound. It also showed it was dark outside. In the videos, it is clear that the vehicle is approaching the crowd and you can hear several people yelling profanities at the driver. At one point, protesters surround the vehicle and the vehicle is struck by several unknown objects and a skateboard. Because the vehicles’ path was blocked by protesters, the driver tried to maneuver her way out of the crowd until her path was clear. There is no indication from the videos that the driver was trying to run over protesters on purpose."Video of the incident has not been released. 1591
