Gavin Newsom sign a bill that would require high school students across California to take an ethnic studies class to graduate."My parents are both first-generation immigrants, they came from Hunan, which is where all the spicy food from China is from," Alvin Lee, 17, said chuckling.Lee is a first-generation American and as a high school senior, sees flaws in our education system."Christopher Columbus is the savior, right all these white figures are the saviors but they don't talk about what Asian Americans, African Americans, what Hispanic Americans and Native Americans did to build America," Lee said emphatically. "We don't learn about this lived history and I think it's very destructive. I think it almost erases some of our identity."Lee said it also leaves minorities feeling powerless. He is a co-founder of GENup, a youth organization committed to changing our nation's schools by giving students more of a voice in their education.That is why he supports AB 331."AB 331 would ease in eventual graduation requirement for high-schoolers in California that they take an ethnic studies course. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Pride announced Thursday they will not allow law enforcement agencies to have a contingent in the Pride Parade or a booth at the Pride Festival as a show of support for the black LGBTQ community and until policing changes are made.San Diego Pride's statement comes amid a major push for police reform and defunding across the nation in the wake of the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.In a letter to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Pride officials asked that he and the City of San Diego “stand with us in support of our Black LGBTQ and ally communities.”Pride San Diego Executive Director Fernando Lopez told 10News, “It can be traumatizing for folks to see people with guns and Tasers and batons march down a parade.”He added, “Now someone who’s black can’t take off their skin. A law enforcement officer can take off their uniform. They are a whole human being. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man shot in an officer-involved shooting downtown last weekend has died from his injuries.Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra, 25, died of his injuries at the hospital on Monday just before 10:30 p.m., SDPD said Tuesday.On Saturday, two officers in the area of 1200 6th Avenue saw Ibarra leaving a building and recognized him from a recent wanted flier regarding a robbery, according to SDPD. Police say the officers attempted to stop and talk with Ibarra but he began to walk away.RELATED: SDPD release surveillance video, body cam footage from officer-involved shooting in Downtown San DiegoPolice say Ibarra dropped the items he was carrying and "reached into his waistband." He drew an object and pointed it at an officer, prompting both officers to fire their service weapons, police added."He produced a handgun and then pointed it at the officers," said SDPD Capt. Rich Freedman over the weekend. "For fear that they were going to be shot, the officers return fire."Ibarra was hit at least once. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and was placed in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.A loaded revolver wrapped in a bandana was recovered at the scene, but police have not determined if Ibarra fired the weapon at officers.The two officers involved, identified as Jonathon Lucas and Tevar Zaki, were not injured. Both officers have been with SDPD for about four years, according to the department.
