SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sunday, San Diego Police will be enforcing scooter, bike and pedestrian safety at several beaches. Throughout the day, officers will be conducting the operation in unspecified areas of Pacific and Mission beaches between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.During the enforcement period, officers will be looking for traffic violations made by drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.RELATED: CA scraps helmet mandate for motorized scootersThe department says it will be paying special attention to drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and lights and failing to yield to pedestrians.Officers will also be watching when pedestrians cross streets illegally or fail to yield to drivers with the right of way.RELATED: Increase in child dockless scooter injuriesAccording to police, the number of pedestrian deaths is rising as more people use non-motorized transportation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Students, friends, and family are mourning the sudden death of a beloved East County teacher.John Berray, a longtime and well-known math teacher in Grossmont Union High School District, was seriously injured when he was leaving for work on Jan. 29.For an unknown reason, he got out of his car without it being placed in "park" and became pinned between his vehicle and his wife's vehicle, the county Medical Examiner said. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for an anoxic brain injury before he was pronounced dead on Feb. 12.According to a statement from Grossmont Union High School District, Berray worked at the district office as a digital learning coach. He most recently served as the district's math curriculum specialist where his passion for math led to innovations being used district wide.By all accounts, Berray was not only an exceptional educator but a husband, father, and friend.His career started in 1995 at West Hills High. He was selected by his students as the Golden Apple Award winner in 2000 and once again in 2008. His peers named him the West Hill High School teacher of the year in 2014. He went on to be named one of five 2014-15 San Diego County Teachers of the Year.After his passing, social media was filled with people living their thoughts and memories of Berray and his impact.Students, colleagues, and family will honor Berray with a memorial planned on March 14, Pi Day, at Journey Community Church in La Mesa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former gang member who killed San Diego Police officer Archie Buggs in 1978 was granted parole suitability Thursday.Jesus Cecena was 17 years old when he opened fire on Officer Buggs during a traffic stop in Skyline. According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Cecena fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the fallen officer and fired a final bullet into his head at point blank range. The officer died on the street, his hand still on his service revolver.Cecena was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His term was later modified, due to a change in law making him eligible for Youth Offender Parole.Cecena has been denied parole at least 13 times. After that period, the Governor will have 30 days to uphold, reverse, modify, send it to the full Board of Commissioners for another review, or take no action.The parole review period will end in January 2019, after the end of Governor Jerry Brown's term, leaving the decision in the hands of his successor. 1609

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Highway Patrol is investigating following a crash involving a military Humvee Thursday night.The crash happened on eastbound Interstate 8 just west of Dunbar Lane. Five vehicles were involved in the crash.As a result of the incident, traffic was backed up on the interstate for miles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Food and Drug Administration is responding Friday to a Team 10 investigation launched after San Diego women complained about Monat Global hair care.Dana Sohovich talked exclusively with 10News, saying the company’s hair products caused severe hair loss and bald spots. Sohovich has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging it falsely promised her “longer, fuller, stronger” hair.
