Sears has won some more time to save itself. But not a lot more time.At a bankruptcy court hearing Thursday, Judge Robert Drain approved Sears' plan to auction off about 500 stores. The auction is central to the company's mission to remain in business. (KGTV) - Several immigrants' rights groups allege harassment and one man says he was strip-searched by Customs and Border Protection agents.The Southern Poverty Law Center, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and the American Immigration Council filed a motion requesting more information from the U.S. government regarding the detention of the Director of Al Otro Lado, calling their acts retaliation for helping asylum seekers.Hugo Castro, Director of Border Angels, Tijuana, spoke with 10News about his experience last December."I was sent to secondary for no reason," Castro said. He was in Mexicali for a doctor's appointment when he was detained by a CBP officer."The officer searched me, said I didn't have a weapon and was trying to grab me and I said hey, you don't need to grab me, just tell me what to do," He said the next 5 hours were unnerving. "They took my cellphone... after that they searched me, body search, and took off my shoes and look all around my, through my pants and underwear," he said looking at the ground.Castro said he was interrogated about migrants and the immigration rights' group Al Otro Lado."You know, if I was part of the caravan the organizers. If we were paying migrants, if we were helping migrants to cross the border."Castro said he explained to the officer he helps bring donations to nine shelters in Tijuana. Castro said he was detained for five and a half hours. Scientists from all over the world recently returned home after the largest Arctic expedition to date.The Polarstern, a German ice breaker, housed hundreds of scientists who spent time over the past year to do research in the Arctic.“The MOSAiC Expedition is an expedition to the central Arctic. We took a ship, an icebreaker ship, and froze it in the arctic sea ice. It stayed there and drifted with that ice for a full year and that ship served as a platform for doing all kinds of research to understand the changing Arctic sea ice and the implications that has on the arctic system and global system,” Matthew Shupe, scientist and co-coordinator of the MOSAiC Expedition, said. He is also a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder.“MOSAiC really represents the largest expedition to the arctic ever,” he said. “MOSAiC is, I would say, very photogenic. It’s really compelling and captivating to all kinds of audiences.”But the data collected and changed observed during the rip serve a larger purpose than just beautiful, picturesque nature videos and photos.“The Arctic is changing. The sea ice is changing and we knew this,” Shupe said. “But when we went there the ice was thinner than we expected.”That change impacts a number of things. Shupe said as the Arctic changes, it’s opening for business. “It’s opening for cargo transportation, it’s opening for tourism.”It’s an indicator of larger changes as well.“Can potentially affect our weather, you can imagine the large scale circulation of our globe is dependent on things like a cold North Pole versus warm tropics and that affects the large scale circulation,” he said.The data these scientists collected over the span of a year will be used for global climate and weather prediction models.“These models rely on information, we have to understand the Earth's system in order to model it,” Shupe said.Hundreds of scientists from 37 different nations, all focusing on different projects, funded in part by U.S. tax dollars.“This is funded by the national science foundation, department of energy, NOAA, NASA, these are institutions that are funding this kind of research to understand arctic change and how it affects all of us," Shupe said.Next year, you’ll be able to experience the Arctic, too.“This planetarium film is an educational documentary about the MOSAiC Expedition,” said Lianna Nixon, a filmmaker, who spent a few months aboard Polarstern. She documented the expedition for a few months to bring the Arctic to everyone. “What we wanted to do was really express what kinds of science people were doing in the field and take that into your local planetarium.”The 30-minute film will be available at planetariums as soon as next year -- a 2D version will also be available.“The Arctic impacts all of us no matter where we live. The polar regions drive a lot of our global climate systems,” Nixon said.Expeditions to the Arctic have been happening for more than 100 years, but this new data collected by MOSAiC will be used in the science community for years to come.“MOSAiC is building on this history of expeditions to the Arctic,” Shupe said. 3131

(AP) — The Mercury News reports that California’s largest utility company said its equipment might have caused a fatal wildfire last month in Northern California.Investigators for the state have seized some of Pacific Gas & Electric’s gear in connection with the blaze, known as the Zogg fire, the company told state regulators. The blaze broke out Sept. 27 near the Shasta County town of Igo. The Shasta County wildfire began in the vicinity of Zogg Mine Road and Jenny Bird Lane. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The new Mexican president is hoping a new deal with three Central American leaders will stop or slow the flow of migrants seeking asylum in the United States. Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador signed the new deal within hours of taking office. The deal with Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, promises to create a fund that would fight poverty, create jobs and make sure migrants feel safe in their home countries. It will also create a re-integration program for those traveling with the caravan who wish to go back.University of San Diego professor, Ev Meade, says this deal looks good on paper but no one will know for sure until more specifics are released. Professor Meade has been traveling to Tijuana to meet and speak with the migrants. He says most leave because of instability. "What I hear from a lot of people is indirect effects of violence, so it's someone that might say I can't afford to feed my family but when you start asking them questions about what they do, the business that they worked for, why they were laid off, the violence is always there. It might be one degree, two degrees, three degrees of separation but the violence is always there," says Meade. It is still unclear how much funding will go towards those Central American countries but Meade says it will be years before we see the effects of the deal. "This kind of progress, when you talk about big structural issues, doesn't happen in a month, or three months or a year, I mean, it takes time," says Meade. 1528
