OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The piercing sound of a high-powered drill could be heard coming from the Otay Mesa border wall prototypes Tuesday morning. Journalist Jorge Neito captured the images from a neighborhood in Tijuana. Construction workers could be seen drilling more than a dozen holes into the concrete barriers.Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed to 10News last week that the prototypes were coming down to make space for a secondary border fence. That fence will strech 14 miles from the beach to Otay Mountain. Officials never specified when the prototype demolition would happen.The prototypes are 30 feet high and were built in last September of 2017. President Trump toured the barriers in 2018. Out of the eight designs there wasn't one specifically picked for the border wall. "There was never an intent to pick one and copy that along the entire U.S. border. The entire concept literally was how can we do this better," San Diego Sector Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott told 10News in 2018. "But we're not picking one of these walls over the other walls, and we never planned on doing that. So, depending on the terrain or the environment, it could be any one of these? Correct."10News reached out to Border Patrol locally to find out if today's work is part of the prototypes' demolition and a spokesperson referred us to Washington D.C., so far we have not heard back. 1413

People around the country are managing sadness and disappointment this holiday season as they make the tough decision not to see family due to coronavirus precautions.2020 has been rough, and as most of the country experiences a rise in COVID-19 cases and a potential second shutdown, experts say it's okay to be disappointed."We all are feeling sad and it's important to recognize it, deal with it and express it, but also we need to realize we'll all get through this, and we have to put the safety of others before our own needs and there are other ways to connect," said Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, a pediatric mental health expert.Capanna-Hodge sees kids of all ages in her Connecticut-based practice and works with parents, teaching them to reduce and reverse mental health issues in children without a prescription."We do that by calming and regulating the nervous system with brain-based therapy, and then we come in with teaching. which is psychotherapy," Capanna-Hodge said. "It's really a very effective way to get unstuck when you have an issue like ADHD or autism."She says children with ADHD and autism may have be having more difficulties amid the pandemic than others."What we've seen during the pandemic is an exacerbation of pre-existing conditions, and some kids for the first time are showing signs of panic, loneliness, depression and anxiety," Capanna-Hodge said. "Certainly, we're seeing parents who are extremely overwhelmed."Those same overwhelmed parents, hoping for holiday togetherness, are now having to explain to their children why they have to have a quieter than usual holiday gathering.Capanna-Hodge has three tips for parents to do just that.1. Validate feelings"You want to listen and say statements like, 'I hear you' You don't want to dismiss how a kid feels if they're crying, you don't want to say, 'I feel that way too.' Parents worried about a lack of social-emotional growth in their young children during social distancing and child care closures, consider playing with the family dog or taking the whole family on the dog's walk.A study published this week in Pediatric Research points to improvements in toddlers’ behavior interacting with others when they have some amount of time spent with the family dog.Information from more than 1,600 parents were included in the study, which asked how old their children were, if they had a dog, how often the child went on the family dog walks or actively played with the dog, as well as other questions. In addition, parents filled out a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire about their child’s development and behavior.Overall, researchers found that preschool aged children from dog-owning homes had reduced likelihood of conduct problems and increased likelihood of prosocial behavior compared to children without a dog. Positive results were seen with family dog walking at least once a week and active play between the family and dog at least three times or more a week.The study’s authors report part of their motivation for the study was the decreasing physical activity levels of young children. They reference studies on increased activity among adult dog owners, and wanted to look at whether there were increased levels in children with dogs in the home.Participants live in Australia, and gave their survey results between 2015 to 2018 as part of a larger early childhood education and care research project.The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire is a commonly used, 25-item document that measures the social and emotional well-being of children.If a family dog is not possible at this time, maybe consider offering to walk a neighbor’s pet; physical activity, interacting with an animal and the benefit of doing something nice for a neighbor. 1900
