The convention was originally planned for Charlotte, North Carolina.The party could not receive assurances from North Carolina's Democratic governor that a ban on mass gatherings would not be lifted in time for the convention. We look forward to bringing this great celebration and economic boon to the Sunshine State!”The party said it will still hold a number of convention-related activities in Charlotte."Because the current North Carolina COVID-19 restrictions would not allow for the celebration to occur in Charlotte and Governor [Roy] Cooper would not work with the RNC to offer guidelines, the celebration of the nomination and the economic impact that goes with it must be moved to Jacksonville," the GOP said in a statement.Despite a rise in coronavirus cases in recent weeks in Florida, the state's Republican governor was eager to accept the relocated nomination."Florida is honored to host this special event where we will celebrate the re-nomination of President Donald J. Trump," said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The White House Correspondents' Association is shelving its tradition of having a comedian roast the president and the press corps at its annual fundraising dinner.Instead, the famed author Ron Chernow will "share his lively, deeply researched perspectives on American politics and history at the 2019 White House Correspondents' Dinner," the association's president Olivier Knox said.Knox made the announcement on Monday. For several months, he had been leaning against inviting a comic, and he had been conferring with other members about the change.President Trump has snubbed the event two years in a row, and there is little reason to believe that he will attend next dinner, which is scheduled for April 27, 2019.The dinner is a key date on Washington's social calendar. But its meaning has changed amid constant attacks on the media and increasing political polarization. Booking Chernow instead of a stand-up performer is a recognition that the annual dinner changes dramatically when the president isn't there.So the association had to rethink things.Historically, Knox told CNN earlier this year, "when the president comes, the program's center of gravity naturally tilts toward the president." After he speaks and ribs the press corps, the featured comedian serves as the counter-balance. But with the president absent, the dinner has a different, more combative feel.Knox and the association's board members are trying to change that."As we celebrate the importance of a free and independent news media to the health of the republic, I look forward to hearing Ron place this unusual moment in the context of American history," Knox said in a statement on Monday.Chernow is the author of six books, including best selling titles about Alexander Hamilton and George Washington. Freedom of the press is always a timely subject and this seems like the perfect moment to go back to basics. My major worry these days is that we Americans will forget who we are as a people and historians should serve as our chief custodians in preserving that rich storehouse of memory. While I have never been mistaken for a stand-up comedian, I promise that my history lesson won't be dry."Comedienne Michelle Wolf spurred debate about the dinner format when she performed at last April's dinner.Some attendees loved her set, while others cringed at some parts of it.Afterward, Trump allies claimed that the jokes proved the press corps' hatred of Trump. The Trump administration is extending a ban on green cards issued outside the United States until the end of the year and adding many temporary work visas to the freeze, including those used heavily by technology companies and multinational corporations. The administration is casting the effort as a way to free up jobs in an economy reeling from the coronavirus. A senior official who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity estimated the restrictions will free up to 525,000 jobs for Americans. Through the first 60 days of the program, the senior administration official said the White House projects that the visa ban saved around 50,000 American jobs, but could not specify the type of jobs. The ban does not impact refugees or people already in the United States, a senior official said. The ban, while temporary, would amount to major restructuring of legal immigration if made permanent. 909

The White House released official portraits of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence Tuesday morning.According to an official press release from the White House, the portraits were produced by the Government Publishing Office. The photos will be distributed and displayed in the offices of federal agencies across the country.The walls of federal agencies have been a bit bare since Jan. 20, when former President Barack Obama's portrait was taken down in all federal agencies following the inauguration. A September story by the Washington Post reported that the Trump administration was slow to release an official portrait — Obama's portrait was released by March of his first year in office, President Bill Clinton's was released by June.The White House also says the photographs will be made available for sale to the public.  859
