LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- Two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand sent quite a few people to Google Search Sunday night, when she ended her speech with the words "inclusion rider."“Look around, ladies and gentlemen, because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed,” she announced. Then she added: “I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider.”In the post-show speeches, she explained what those precious words mean - and how surprised she is that she never knew them before. "I just found out about this last week," she said. "An inclusion rider..which means you can ask for and or demand at least 50 percent diversity in not only the casting but also the crew."McDormand went on to say that as a 35-year veteran in the film industry, she was shocked that she never knew about the inclusion rider. "This whole idea of women trending...no," she said shaking her head. "Africans Americans trending...no. It changes now." 1030
LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- According to multiple media reports and NBA insiders, one of the summer's most coveted free agents Kawhi Leonard will be joining the Los Angeles Clippers.Friday's news ends days of KawhiWatch, a media and fan frenzy that included a helicopter chase and people camping outside hotels hoping to persuade the 2019 NBA Finals MVP to stay with the Toronto Raptors, or join either the Los Angeles Lakers or Clippers.Leonard's camp has not released an official announcement nor made any comments on the reports as of Friday night. The former San Diego State University star will be joining a young and exciting Clippers team that won two games against the top-seeded Golden State Warriors in the first round of this year's Western Conference playoffs. The Lakers dealt away a youthful core of assets to the New Orleans Pelicans for power forward All-Star Anthony Davis in hopes of landing the league's baller trifecta of LeBron James, Davis, and Leonard -- AKA the Big 3.Leonard, a 6'7" small forward who grew up in Los Angeles and played at SDSU for two seasons, will join All-Star forward Paul George, who was reportedly acquired via a trade with Oklahoma City, also on Friday night. The 28-year-old Leonard is expected to sign a four-year, 2 million maximum contract, according to ESPN Senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.A Friday night @wojespn bomb this lifelong @LAClippers fan never thought he'd see! LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Utah man was held without bail Thursday on charges of murder in the deaths of an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy and another man.Rhett McKenzie Nelson, 30, of St. George, wore a navy blue jail uniform during his initial arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court as the family of Deputy Joseph G. Solano and uniformed deputies with black mourning bands over the badges looked on.Authorities allege Nelson shot Dmitry Koltsov from his vehicle in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, attempted to kill Aleksandr Chudetckii, then fatally shot Solano inside a Jack in the Box in suburban Alhambra. They also say he committed two robberies in Long Beach.Nelson's family says he suffers from mental illness and an opiate addiction. Defense attorney Jenn Bartick was not immediately available for comment.Nelson is due back in court on July 22 for further arraignment. He did not enter a plea on Thursday before Judge Teresa Sullivan and quietly answered, "Yes, Your Honor," when she asked him if he understood that his arraignment was being extended. The case includes special circumstance allegations of multiple murders, murder by means of discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and using a handgun in the commission of the crimes. Prosecutors haven't decided whether to seek life in prison or the death penalty if Nelson is convicted.Solano's family hugged each other as they filed out of the courtroom and were quickly shepherded into a back room by prosecutor Antonella Nistorescu.A candlelight vigil will be held for Solano at the Jack in the Box where he was shot Thursday night, according to social media posts by San Gabriel City Councilwoman Denise Menchaca. 1701
Los Angeles Police Department officers had gone 13 years without killing a hostage or bystander while confronting armed suspects. In the last six weeks, though, such shootings -- described by LAPD Chief Michel Moore as "every officer's worst nightmare' -- have happened twice.Outlining steps to prevent the deaths of other bystanders or hostages, Moore this week released video of officers fatally shooting a man and the woman he was holding with a knife at her throat in Van Nuys on June 16. 499
