PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- A Charlotte County deputy was forced to use his firearm to defend himself from charging dogs during a call Thursday morning.According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the deputy responded to a call from a resident who was afraid to exit his truck due to three loose and aggressive pit bulls in his yard. The deputy arrived to observe the dogs, described as approximately 100 pounds each, leaving the man's yard and chasing chickens in the next yard.As the deputy was speaking to the resident, the dogs returned and began to charge the men, forcing the resident back into his truck and chasing the deputy around it.The deputy fired his weapon at two of the dogs before they retreated down the road.Animal Control arrived and took the dogs into custody, giving the injured dogs treatment. They are investigating any possible citations for the owners. 889

Race relations is one issue impacting voters as they head to the polls for the midterms next week.A recent poll from the Associated Press found 77 percent of Democrats and about 50 percent of Republicans say they're dissatisfied with race relations.During a speech this week, President Donald Trump stirred up another controversy.“They have a word. It sort of became old fashion. It's called a nationalist. And I say, really, we're not supposed to use that word?” President Trump said. “You know what? I am, I'm a nationalist, OK?”The president says he used the word because he's proud of our country, but some say the word is a signal to white nationalists and points back to the president's comments after the Nazi rally in Charlottesville last year.“He's allowing white nationalist to feel comforted in those words,” says Andre Perry, with the Brookings Institution. “It's clear he's using a divisive rhetoric to rally his base, and that rhetoric is racist.”But for the past year, Candace Owens with the conservative, non-profit organization Turning Point USA, has defended Trump.“No matter what he says, they spin it,” Owens says. “No matter how he says it, they spin it. You saw that with [the] Charlottesville thing. What he said was factually accurate, but they spun it like he was supporting the KKK.”At the White House, President Trump recently hosted a summit with young black conservatives like Owens.“Just because somebody thinks differently than you does not make them a racist,” Owens argues. “And when you keep continually calling people racist, what you're actually doing is diminishing the experiences that real people who lived through eras like that actually had.”“Black Americans on many social issues are very conservative, but until Trump rids himself of the very racists policies, blacks should not find comfort in that administration,” Perry argues. 1886

President Donald Trump, less than 24 hours after a 29-year-old Uzbek national allegedly drove a truck down a bike path and killed at least eight people, blamed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrats for immigration policies he claims allowed the suspect to enter the United States. In a series of tweets on Wednesday morning, Trump turned his focus from comforting those impacted in New York and focused on advocating for the tougher immigration laws that defined his 2016 campaign."The terrorist came into our country through what is called the "Diversity Visa Lottery Program," a Chuck Schumer beauty," Trump tweeted. "I want merit based." 660

Public speaking is one of the biggest fears. About 7 percent people in the U.S. have the fear, that's about 27 million Americans. But there are some steps you can take in your everyday life to beat the fear for good. This is the moment Anyeik Artis and all her classmates will see if she's overcome her fear of public speaking."My name is Anyeik and my speech is about what we think we are," Artis says. "It's all about the mindset you choose to be in that will determine your outcomes in life."She stuck to her notes and gave personal examples."My goal in life was to go to college when I was in high school," Artis explains.Eventually the notes were gone and the speech ended much differently than it began."Not everybody is going to be the same because our thoughts are so different," Artis says in closing. "So thank you."She made it back to her seat relieved."I kept shaking but I got through it.," Artis says. Then, she waited for feedback."There was way less fidgeting," said Oldile Fazioni, Artis' teacher at Community College of Denver. "You were more present, you were really looking at us strong with the strong eye contact."Fazioni helps her students overcome their fears. The first step is a starting exercise, where students make eye contact with their audience one person at a time."Try to change the speech from a speech to the audience to a conversation with that person," Fazioni says.Next, she teaches students to be in touch with their bodies. It works by consciously feeling your hands and feet to take attention away from the fears in your mind and become more present. But the biggest key she says is concentrating on content."The moment that the student is able to move away from the mind and into the verbal message and making sure that it is clear I see a huge shift in the confidence of the students," Fazoni says. And lastly, celebrate! Recognize how far you've come, even if you're not perfect."Let's value the mistakes just as much as we value the success because through the mistake or through their fault we really learned to become better speakers," Fazioni says.Fazioni says you don't have to be in a class to try these things out. You can practice in small group conversations. So when that big speech does come, you'll be ready.      2309

RABBIT HASH, Ky. - It was the ultimutt pawlitical showdown, but one dog proved he was the most pupular pooch in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky.Wilbur, a french bulldog, won the race for mayor Tuesday night with 13,143 votes, unseating incumbent Brynneth Pawltro.Second and third-place finishers, Jack Rabbit, the beagle, and Poppy, the golden retriever, respectively, will both be Rabbit Hash Ambassadors. Lady Stone will continue to be a Rabbit Hash Ambassador as well.Since 1998, the mayor of Rabbit Hash has been a dog. Rabbit Hash’s canine mayors don’t make legislative decisions for the town, which is owned by the Rabbit Hash Historical Society, but their elections raise money to keep the town’s historic buildings in good condition. This story was first reported by Zach McAuliffe at WCPO in Cincinnati, Ohio. 815
