For many restaurants, like Sam's No. 3 in downtown Denver, the experience is part of what they serve.“We were built to serve people inside,” said Sam Armatas, owner of the restaurant. But with ever-changing COVID-19-related dining restrictions and winter looming, delivery is becoming a more enticing option for customers. And for Sam’s No. 3, delivery apps make that easy.“We’re able to continue to serve our product, try and stay relevant as far as people eating our food,” Armatas said. The diner has three locations. At two of them. 90% of orders are now made through delivery apps. This can be convenient for customers, but costly for some of the restaurants. Exposure to consumers has it's price.“There are negatives. I mean they take a commission but those commissions are now capped,” Armatas said. “You're pretty much at the mercy right now of the delivery services hoping to get your food out hot, tasty and attractive still.”He chooses to stick with the apps to get his food out there to people, while for other restaurants, the cons of delivery apps outweigh the pros.“At the moment, we will not use any third-party services at all for delivery,” said Giles Flanagin, Co-founder of Blue Pan Pizza.Blue Pan relies on their team of 17 part-time in-house delivery drivers, instead.“In-house delivery can work cost-wise, if the restaurateur is willing to put in the time and the effort to build that specific revenue stream,” he said. “If I use Doordash, Grubhub, or Postmates and I pay a 25% commission, not only am I losing all of my profit, but I’m in the red.”Flanagin said Blue Pan has been using their own delivery since they opened in 2016. They tried a delivery app to serve areas farther away, but too many bad experiences led them to cancel.“When a customer gets a pizza from a third-party delivery and it’s a poorly delivered experience, they don't look at Grubhub or those businesses. They call us and they're upset,” he said. For him, the reputation of his business and their food is important.“I think the best way I can summarize making a decision to use a third-party delivery service is buyer beware. This is our experience and I’m not saying it's everyone's experience,” Flanagin said.It’s a balancing act for these apps like Uber Eats and Grubhub. They have a business to run, but they also have to consider the restaurant and the driver.“Restaurants are just trying to find any possible ways to break even or minimize their costs,” said Alexandre Padilla, an economist and professor at the Metropolitan State University of Denver. “It’s a very complicated issue where the apps are providing a service where they are trying to attract drivers to meet the increase in demand due to the pandemic.”As potential customers opted to stay home in March when lockdowns began, the demand for drivers went up.Gig economy workers like Julian Rai almost completely switched from rideshare apps to delivery apps backs in March.“Remember that we are basically waiters on wheels, we’re servers on wheels,” he said. “If it weren't for tips, we’re making less than minimum wage just from the delivery fee. Like a waiter, it’s very similar to what a server would make before tips. So at the end of the day, well over two thirds to three fifths of my income comes from tips.”Rai explained they may spend 20 to 40 minutes on one single order so, reasonably, they ask for some compensation for that.It’s a tough balancing act between restaurant, app, and driver.“I don’t know that that balance has been struck yet,” Rai said.For now, delivery is a means to an end for these restaurants that thrive on providing quality food and a great dine-in customer experience.“Our business model isn't built to survive this way,” Armatas said. “We’re just trying to stay relevant, trying to survive. If we can get through winter great. That’s the hope, the dream, is that by March we’re still here.” 3901
Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton sent mixed messages when she said she did not want to run for president again, but after hesitating she added that she would like to be president someday.When asked by tech magazine Recode's Kara Swisher at a taping Friday of the Recode Decode podcast whether she wanted to run for president again, Clinton said, "No, no."But after a pause and some prodding from Swisher, Clinton said, "Well, I'd like to be president.""I think, hopefully, when we have a Democrat in the Oval Office in January of 2021, there's going to be so much work to be done," she elaborated, later adding, "The work would be work that I feel very well prepared for, having been at the Senate for eight years, having been a diplomat in the State Department, and it's just going to be a lot of heavy lifting."When Swisher asked whether Clinton would be doing that heavy lifting, Clinton replied, "Oh, I have no idea. ... Bush was taken to a hospital in Maine on Sunday after experiencing low blood pressure and fatigue.Bush's spokesman, Jim McGrath, said in a tweet Sunday afternoon that the President, who is 93 years old, will likely remain at a Southern Maine Health Care facility "for a few days for observation.""The former president is awake and alert, and not in any discomfort," McGrath continued.Bush was previously admitted to a Houston hospital last month after contracting an infection that spread to his blood the day after a funeral was held for his wife, Barbara Bush. For generations, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the community has thrived on the return of the University of Nebraska’s legendary football team each fall.“Nebraska football, not just for Lincoln, but for Nebraska is a huge thing,” said Joey Rupp, who owns a store that sells all things Huskers.But if 2020 has proven anything, it’s that few things are promised.“When this first all started in March, we really saw a decline. We’ve seen a decline each month,” Rupp said.Rupp manages Best of Big Red, which is located in Lincoln’s Haymarket district, an area within walking distance of Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium filled with bars, shops, and restaurants.Rupp typically has a lot riding on college football season.A Nebraska home game can draw around 150,000 people to town.“Football season probably generates about 75 percent revenue for the year,” Rupp said.2020 has been different.Coronavirus cut the Nebraska Cornhuskers' home games from the typical seven to four. Crowd restrictions mean the team will play in a mostly empty stadium.Nebraska fans have sold out their 85,000-seat stadium for every home game since 1962.“We’re not a heavy tourist destination but relying on college football is our biggest tourist draw for the entire year,” explained Todd Ogden, the president and CEO of the Downtown Lincoln Association.A pandemic and postponed football season put a lot of pressure on Ogden.“A lot of our businesses completely rely on those seven Saturdays to survive,” Ogden said.He’s leading an effort called City of Red. The campaign pushes for Husker faithful to still support places that depend on football dollars. That includes bars and restaurants.Bar owner Matt Taylor says his bar has been playing old, classic Nebraska games on TV since real Cornhusker games won’t start until Oct. 24.“Normally, I think it’s the best place to watch a game including the stadium,” Taylor said of his bar Tavern on the Square.Taylor loves owning his bar, but love is a tough word for the bar business in 2020."I usually love my job, but this year has not been very fun,” Taylor said.He says while it's good there will be a football season, it's unclear what the financials will look like.“It definitely helps but it won’t be a normal game day. Obviously, with decrease capacity in the stadium, I think less people will travel,” Taylor said.It could be easy to see red as a color of anger this year, but in the fall, especially in Lincoln, red has a more optimistic meaning."This has been a strange time, because it feels like we’re more divided than ever,” Taylor said. “I think if we can center around a team and all cheer for a single goal, I think it brings people together.” 2673
