It wouldn't be the digital age if there wasn't an app for that. Like everything else, parents can connect with their student's classroom, teacher and assignments through technology. While an uncertain fall for schools lies ahead, districts are turning toward an education system that brings people together, even when apart. One of those systems is Schoology, made by PowerSchool. It allows teachers to organize their grades, attendance, classes and materials."Schoology really became our hub for communication," said Melissa Stanton, an intervention specialist in Ohio. "Parent communication, my Google Meets, my office hours all there for my students."Hardeep Gulati, the CEO of PowerSchool, says they serve 45 million students in North America. He refers to his company as the "glue" between educators, parents, and students."School is more than the building. It's the people. It's empowering the teachers to have the ability to continue that instruction both online and in the physical format.," Gulat said.He said teachers spend 40% of their time on things that are administrative, not instructional."A big part of this is providing the analytics, so teachers have the full view," Gulati said. "Not just the grade level, but the social and emotional level and the whole child level so they can see how they can support each child better."PowerSchool technology is a software system that integrates every aspect of education, from instruction to training — even paychecks and student portals. The school districts that were already using it were better prepared for the COVID-19 shutdown."We did see the districts who already had a blended learning in place had a 96% engagement," Gulati said. "But districts who had to scramble and did not have some of the things only saw 56% engagement."According to Gulati, parents can access their students' entire schedule and see what their child can expect from their school district this fall. For Stanton, the transition to online learning this past spring wasn't that bad. But she says her district is in a rural area and there are some students who aren't connected."WiFi needs to be for every student — I think everybody — in this time of life," she said, "It needs to be like electricity or water. It's there for everybody rather than the exorbitant prices that it is at times."Stanton says she's spending her summer preparing for more digital instruction this fall."I hope to see my kids in some capacity, whether it be face-to-face or virtual or blended," she said. "But I also worry about school being a safe haven for so many of my students. What happens when they come to school sick, and we all get infected and bring it home to our kids and our families? It's not something I want."Luckily, companies like PowerSchool are on a mission to give teachers all the tools they need to teach. 2849

In his opening monologue, Academy Awards host Jimmy Kimmel encouraged award recipients to discuss social issues, thank family members and give words of encouragement during acceptance speeches, but Kimmel announced there is an incentive to keep speeches short:A Brand New Jet Ski! Retail value: ,999.To the tune of the Price is Right theme, Kimmel showed off the brand new jet ski on the Oscars' stage. When Sam Rockwell took the stage to win Best Actor in a Supporting Role, he said he would keep his speech short in an effort to win the jet ski.“Why waste precious time thanking your mom when you could take her” on a jet ski ride, Kimmel said.During his monologue, Kimmel was not afraid to get political, and acknowledged some of Hollywood's recent shortcomings. Kimmel discussed the Me Too movement, and the importance of the academy of expelling Harvey Weinstein following sexual misconduct revelations were reported. “The world is watching us. We need to set an example,” he said. “The truth is if we are successful, women will only have to deal with harassment all the time every other place they go.”Kimmel also pointed out Hollywood's liberal slant."We don't make films like 'Call Me By Your Name' for money. We make them to upset Mike Pence," he said. While Kimmel only delivered a few overly political jokes, he opted to make a flub fom last year's Academy Awards when the wrong film was announced as Best Picture a central theme of his monologue on Sunday. “What happened last year was unfortunate,” Kimmel said, “I said, ‘No, I don’t want to do comedy with the accountants.’ And then the accountants went and did comedy on their own.” 1693

INDIANAPOLIS -- The two men accused of shooting and killing a 1-year-old were at home playing video games at the time, the mother of one of the suspects said Wednesday morning.Darrin Banks, 27, and Brian Palmer, 29, have been charged with shooting and killing 1-year-old Malaysia Robson on March 30. "I want the detectives, I want whoever, to pull up Microsoft and see where they have logged in," Renee Sloan, Palmer's mother,  said. "You have dinged these men as murderers. You have put a tag on them as murderers, and they're not murderers."Robson was killed when gunfire struck her home on the 3500 block of Wittfield Avenue. Police have said it began as a dispute on social media. Someone then drove to the home and opened fire at around 2 a.m. Banks and Palmer face preliminary charges of murder and aggravated assault. "The whole community is talking about Darrin Banks and Brian Palmer," Sloan said. "Those are their names. They're not murderers. They're human beings and they have names. They did not do this. That is not in their demeanor. That is not how they work. That is not what they do. I want to have a voice for them. Everyone else has a voice but those two. I want people to know what type of people they are."The weekend after Robson was killed, the 1-year-old's grandmother helped organize a call for unity in the community and a march to reduce gun violence. For Robson's grandmother, it was a way to remember her grandchild and push for change so no family ever has to go through the same loss."For anyone with kids - go home and love your kids like never before," she said. Malaysia Robson is the youngest victim of a fatal shooting in Indianapolis since 2013. Her death was also the only under 10 shooting victim during that period to be ruled a criminal homicide. The other deaths were determined to be accidental.  1912

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ninety minutes after Tonya Holtgrave dropped her dog, Titan, off at Barkefellers on the west side, the doggy daycare called to tell her that Titan appeared to be injured.Holtgrave said they told her that they weren't sure what happened, but she needed to take him to a veterinary hospital immediately."I was just shocked when they called me and said he was hurt, and it's kind of been a shock ever since," she said.According to medical records, Titan fractured his tibia in both legs."They let my dog get hurt," Holtgrave said "That's negligence on their part, not mine."She said the vets told her Titan will need an expensive surgery. She wants the company to help pay for it."I just can't afford that right now, ,000 for surgery," Holtgrave said. "I am already out over ,000 just in all of these vet bills and stuff, and his medicine."Barkefellers said they checked their surveillance cameras and did not see any point where the dog might have gotten injured under their care. Holtgrave said she had Titan's vet call the facility. The manager said they can't pay for anything unless they have proof that Titan was injured on their property."The other vet had already told him it was a traumatic injury, that he didn't walk in there with two broken legs," Holtgrave said. The owners of Barkefellers said they will help pay for the medical bills once they have their own vets review the records and X-rays themselves, and get the proof they need to make sure this injury happened there. 1518
