New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are imposing a 14-day quarantine on incoming travelers from states with a high transmission rate of the coronavirus."We worked really hard to get the viral transmission rate down, and we don't want to see it go up," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "So we are jointly instituting that travel advisory today."The travel advisory will apply to states with two criteria: States that have an infection rate above 10 cases per 100,000 people and states where 10% of the total population test positive. Both criteria are measured on a seven-day rolling average. As of Wednesday, the states that the travel advisory applies to include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Utah and Texas. This story was originally published by Lauren Cook and Mark Sundstrom on WPIX. 846
NEW YORK CITY — Despite initially saying work would begin Thursday on a large "Black Lives Matter" mural on New York's Fifth Avenue, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's office has now said the painting of the mural will be postponed until next week. The mayor said at his daily briefing Thursday that the delay was due to "logistics" and that his office will have more announcements about the project at a later date.De Blasio first announced the mural in late June, saying it would be painted on the famed avenue, right in front of Trump Tower. The location selected intentionally."Painting 'Black Lives Matter outside (President Donald Trump's) home is a message to him that, in fact, black lives do matter, that black people built New York City and they've never been compensated for all they did," de Blasio said.Dozens of cities across the country have painted similar murals on city streets, following in the footsteps of Washington, D.C.President Donald Trump slammed the planned mural Wednesday, calling it a "symbol of hate" in a series of tweets.Trump claimed the mural would be "denigrating this luxury Avenue" and "will further antagonize New York's Finest."De Blasio fired back on Twitter saying, "Black people BUILT 5th Ave and so much of this nation. Your 'luxury' came from THEIR labor, for which they. have never been justly compensated.""We are honoring them. The fact that you see it as denigrating your street is the definition of racism," de Blasio tweeted. On Tuesday night, New York City lawmakers approved an billion budget for 2021. That budget cuts the NYPD funding from the billion the department received in 2020 to about billion. This story was originally published by Anthony DiLorenzo on WPIX in New York City. 1752
NEW YORK (AP) — The storied New York clothier Brooks Brothers is filing for bankruptcy protection. The company that says it’s put 40 U.S. presidents in its suits survived two world wars and navigated through casual Fridays and a loosening of dress standards even on Wall Street, but the coronavirus pandemic pushed the 200-year-old company into seek Chapter 11 protection Wednesday.A spokesperson for the retailer told CNBC that the company has been evaluating strategic options to position them for success, including a potential sale of the business.Another famed men’s clothier, Barneys of New York, sought bankruptcy protection last year, and it was followed by a slew of others toppled by the pandemic, including Neiman Marcus, J.Crew and J.C. Penney.More bankruptcies are anticipated in the retail sector which has been rattled by the spread of COVID-19. 867
NEW YORK — Now sold on Amazon: insulin and inhalers. The company said Tuesday that it has opened an online pharmacy, giving shoppers the chance to buy their medication on their phones and computers. The move propels Amazon into a new business and could shake up the pharmacy industry. The move puts the online retail giant in direct competition with big chains like CVS and Walgreens, who rely on their pharmacies to bring them a steady flow of shoppers who stop by frequently to pick up their medications. Amazon said it will offer commonly prescribed medications starting, including creams, pills and medications that need to stay cold, like insulin. Shoppers have to set up a profile on Amazon’s website and have doctors send prescriptions to Amazon. 762
