SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When the Chargers bolted north to the Los Angeles area, not only did they vacate what’s now known as SDCCU stadium, they also emptied out of their facility off Murphy Canyon Road.Formerly known as Chargers Park, the facility belongs to the City of San Diego. Team 10 discovered even though the site is vacant, the utility and maintenance bills continue to pile up.According to data analyzed by Team 10, the electric bill for August 2018 was ,949.78. The most recent water and wastewater bill from the end of June to the end of July 2018 shows a balance of more than ,000 and a year's worth of landscaping, maintenance, and fire safety repairs ran ,067.12.A city spokesperson said any vacant building still has operating and utility costs.“This is not a way to maximize taxpayer dollars,” said San Diego Councilmember David Alvarez, who saw the bills Team 10 received through a public information request.In 2017, Alvarez and Councilmember Lorie Zapf backed a plan that would have transformed the facility into a temporary homeless shelter. It didn’t happen.“We have a poor record and a history of not being able to use our real estate assets in a good way,” Alvarez said.Team 10 started looking into the operating costs after seeing a video posted to YouTube of people touring the facility.The guys from “The Somethin’ or Other Tour” took a peek around the building. The team of brothers explores new locations each week as part of their online content company.In their video, the lights inside the building appeared to be on, and the sprinklers were running.In one portion of the video you can hear one of the hosts saying, “The Chargers should have stayed in San Diego, that’s what we believe, and we’re sticking to that.”According to the city, the facility has been used off and on since the Chargers left.The San Diego Police Department occupied it Sept. 11, 2017 through Oct. 31, 2017, along with Jan. 31, 2018 and Feb. 19, 2018.San Diego State University also held a brief tenancy between Feb. 28, 2018 and March 14, 2018.The utility bills analyzed by Team 10 are noticeably higher when the facility is being used.A city spokesperson denied Team 10’s request for an on-camera interview about the costs and stated no one was available.They did email a response to our request: 2326

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego was granted a temporary use permit by the city council in National City to use El Toyon Park to conduct a clinical vaccination trial.The permit is good from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31, 2022, with a rental rate of ,000 per month.A spokesperson for UCSD Health said the site would be for the Janssen clinical trial, which is still awaiting final approval locally; more details could not be confirmed Friday.The vaccination clinic would be set up in a parking lot at the park in National City, one of the communities heavily impacted by COVID-19.Community advocates have been working with UCSD to inform potential participants in the South Bay about vaccine trials.“The Chicano Federation has been working with a lot of our underserved communities, but also some of the hardest-hit communities by COVID-19, particularly the Latino communities,” said Roberto Alcantar, Chief Strategy Officer for the Chicano Federation. “One of the hot topics to come out of this is the issue with vaccinations.”Alcantar said concerns were raised over a different trial that was set to begin in the South Bay earlier this month; it was later put on hold. But UCSD quickly worked with the federation to ensure residents in the trial areas would get the information needed to make informed decisions if they wanted to participate.“We’re happy to see that UCSD is taking the lead in National City, and it’s not some other group because we know that they’re doing the best that they can to provide the right information,” he said. “If there are trials that are happening out there that are unethical or targeting people of color with incentives, we’ll call them out.”UCSD researchers previously said they hoped to focus on recruiting people for the trials from underserved communities with the highest rate of COVID-19.The San Diego Latino Health Coalition, which includes the Chicano Federation and several other nonprofit organizations, will continue community outreach efforts before the trial officially begins.“We’re very effective at getting the information out, and people are receptive to us because they trust us, they know us, we’ve been working with them for decades,” said Alcantar.There’s no word on when the trial will start, but soon there may be three clinical trials running simultaneously with two focused primarily on the South Bay. 2361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While San Diego County remains in the red tier of California’s tiered reopening plan, many local gyms and fitness centers continue to struggle to operate at 10 percent capacity.For some, it’s just not enough to survive, and business owners have to make difficult decisions.“Our rent doesn’t change whether we have one person in class versus 25,” said Taylor Hollenkamp, owner of BarreBody Studios in Pacific Beach and Tierrasanta.Days ago, Hollenkamp sent a notice out to members of BarreBody Studios, announcing the fitness studio would be closing after nearly a decade in business.“With no end in sight of things going back to normal, I had to make the decision to close permanently because the business is just hemorrhaging money,” she said.Others in the San Diego fitness industry can relate to the pain Hollenkamp is experiencing.“You can’t run a business, you can’t advertise, you can’t bring in new clients,” said Matt Ceglie, a personal trainer, and co-creator of the Strongist app, which allows users to track and log workouts.He said he has not been able to train any of his clients in a private Carmel Valley gym since March.“I had about 25 clients that I worked with on a weekly basis, now I train about nine of those clients in their homes or remotely,” said Ceglie. “It’s almost impossible right now in the tier we’re in to run your gym at 10 percent capacity.”When it comes to California’s reopening tiers, San Diego is currently in the red tier, allowing gyms and fitness centers to operate at 10 percent capacity.If San Diego County’s COVID-19 numbers improve and we move to the orange tier, they could open inside at 25 percent capacity. In the yellow tier, which is considered the best, it’s 50 percent capacity.With no exact solutions to the loss of income or path to a full reopening, more small business owners have to say goodbye to the dreams they worked hard to make a reality.“I’ve been building this business for 25 years, and it goes away just like that,” said Ceglie.“I was so passionate about the fitness industry, and this has just caused such a heartache for me and so much stress that it’s not fun for me anymore,” said Hollenkamp. “This has been my career, and I don’t know what I’m going to do after this.” 2269

San Diego (KGTV)- After a second vote, a marijuana production facility is given the green light to move forward. Dozens of people, on both sides of the issue, were there as city leaders made their decision. Planning commissioners voted 4 to 2, giving business leaders the conditional use permit they needed to move ahead with plans. “We’re elated that the decision was in our favor,” says Jared Angell, CFO of THinC. “We followed all the rules and regulations and were glad to see that the planning commission could uphold that.”Business leaders were hoping for this decision after a deadlock vote of 3 to 3 last week. The over 21,000 square feet building on Ruffner Road will be used for the marijuana production site. During today’s vote, some planning commissioners asked that the building, moving forward, be more transparent by adding more windows. Commissioners also requested storage items be housed on the top level. Community members were concerned about the safety and future of their neighborhood, but business leaders say ThinC is committed to working with everyone.“We reached out to a lot of local business and community members, and we’ve been working with them to ensure that our business will not negatively affect them in any way,” says Angell. “It sends a strong message about the strength of community,” says community member Ping Wang. “I would be overjoyed for our community coming together, banning together, and supporting each other.”The site will be used for manufacturing and distributing marijuana products. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With unemployment near record lows through Labor Day, efforts are shifting from helping San Diegans get jobs to helping them land better ones.The San Diego Workforce Partnerships is teaming up with local employers to offer on-the-job training to workers so they can get certified and move up in their careers. The focus is currently on so-called middle-skill occupations, those that require something more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. The state Employment Development Department says the five most in-demand middle-skill occupations in San Diego and Imperial Counties are accounting assistants, teacher assistants, medical assistants, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, and nursing assistants. The EDD says there are currently 2,500 openings for those positions. The Workforce Partnership recently teamed up with First Promise Care Service in El Cajon to offer its caregivers a two- to three-month certification program to become certified nursing assistants. "It does motivate because they know they're not just going to be there," said Dyna Jones, CEO of First Promise. "There's actually a promotion. There's growth, and people are looking for something like that."Jones said caregivers who complete the program could go from earning per hour to as much as as a team lead if they stay with the company. The Workforce Partnership has a new tool for San Diegans to look up information on different jobs, what they pay, and training requirements and opportunities. The county's unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in July, the same as a year earlier. There are still about 57,000 San Diegans who are unemployed. 1683
