A 17-month-old girl who was wounded in the west Texas shooting rampage is expected to make a full recovery.The toddler, identified as Anderson Davis, was one of the 22 people injured in Saturday’s shooting. Davis’ family praised doctors and first responders for saving her life. Texas governor Greg Abbott, citing family members, said the girl would need to have surgery Monday in order to remove shrapnel from her body.The Davis family also said they're looking forward to reuniting Anderson with her twin brother at home soon.Seven people were killed in the shootings. The victims ranged in ages from 15 to 57 years old, according to Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke. One of those killed was Mary Granados, a 29-year-old mail carrier who was on the phone with her twin sister when the shooting occurred.Police say the suspect, 36-year-old Seth Ator, hijacked the mail truck and continued randomly spraying the roads with bullets.The suspect was shot and killed by police. Authorities say Ator had been fired from his trucking job hours before the rampage. However, a motive has not yet been determined. 1118
PUEBLO, Colo. — The Colorado State Patrol said two people are dead and several injured following a crash involving a charter bus that was transporting 10 children and five adults on Interstate 25 near Pueblo, Colorado, Sunday afternoon. The bus, carrying a group from a New Mexico Catholic organization, was traveling southbound when it veered off the highway and struck part of a bridge embankment structure around 2:30 p.m. near mile marker 109, about 10 miles north of Pueblo. The 22-year-old male bus driver and another person, whose age and name is unknown, were killed in the crash. The 13 other passengers suffered injuries ranging from minor to critical, State Patrol Sgt. Blake White said during a Sunday evening briefing.State Patrol Cpl. Ivan Alvarado said the unidentified driver might have suffered a medical incident, possibly a seizure. He was ejected from the bus when it veered west off the roadway and struck the dirt embankment, Alvarado said. The front of the bus sustained significant damage, leading to the two deaths, he said. The group on the bus were from the Aquinas Newman Center at the University of New Mexico. They were returning home to New Mexico from the Steubenville of the Rockies Catholic conference in Denver when the crash occurred. The Denver Archdiocese released the following statement:“We offer our prayers tonight for everyone involved in the tragic bus accident this afternoon near Pueblo. A dad is credited with rescuing his daughter Sunday after she was allegedly grabbed by a woman at a south Phoenix park. Phoenix police report that on Sunday afternoon, 43-year-old Denise Charlene Antone grabbed a 7-year-old girl at a park and wouldn't let her go.Police say Antone appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time. She allegedly grabbed the girl and refused to let her go, until the girl's father intervened. He demanded Antone release his daughter, which she eventually did. Antone was arrested for aggravated assault. 557
"By the grace of God, He kept me from losing my mind," said Viola Burton as she sat in the lobby of the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility in Jackson Monday waiting for her son. After 32 agonizing years, Viola's son, Danny, was being released from prison. "I knew in my heart that he couldn't kill nobody," she said.Anxiously waiting with Viola were attorneys Solomon Radner and Madeline Sinkovich from Excolo Law and Claudia Whitman of the National Capital Crime Assistance Network. Fifteen years ago, Danny Burton wrote a letter to Claudia, telling her about his case and that he was innocent. Claudia, who volunteers all of her time to investigate wrongful conviction cases, asked the attorneys to take a look at the case. The law team also investigated, talked to witnesses, and found a prisoner who would eventually sign an affidavit that named the real killers of the 1987 murder of Leonard Ruffin in Detroit."There was a lot of witness intimidation," said attorney Madeline Sinkovich, who added that young witnesses were mistreated by police to get statements. When a tearful Danny Burton walked out of prison, he gave his mother a long embrace. "I'm really shocked," Danny said while appearing to be in a state of disbelief. He wanted to see the rest of his family, but not everyone is still around. Danny's father died years ago from a heart attack. Viola said he just couldn't take the fact that his son was innocent but locked away. Danny's sister passed away last year. Before taking Danny to get some food - he requested McDonald's - his attorney took him to The Suit Depot in Oak Park where owner Marty Babayov, who heard about Danny's case, wanted to give him some new clothes, including suits for court. Danny now wants to help free other men he says are in prison for crimes they didn't commit. "A lot of them can't read or write to seek assistance," Danny said.
