RAINBOW, Calif. (KGTV) — The wildfires in Australia destroyed many parts of the Outback. But they have also touched off a massive wave of support around the world. Everyone is searching for ways to help not just the families and firefighters, but the animals deprived of their homes. A woman from the tiny town of Rainbow is hoping her handiwork will help the Australian wildlife in a big way.Symphony Ariosta, 31, is a true animal lover. "I love animals. If I could, I would run a rescue myself," Ariosta said. Scientists at the University of Sydney estimate at least one billion animals have been killed in the months-long wildfires. Seeing the images of the animals and the flames on the news reminded Ariosta of the tragedy her family experienced in the 2007 Rice Canyon Fire in Fallbrook. "It's heartbreaking," Ariosta said. "I feel, no matter where in the world you are, if you can help, why not?"She wondered what she could do without breaking the bank. She searched online and found "Rescue Craft Co," a group dedicated to handicrafts."There's wildlife pouches, there are bat wraps, there are little marsupial bags, hanging pouches," Ariosta explained. Crocheting birds nests is Ariosta's go-to."They're quick, and they're easy to pump out," Ariosta said, with her crochet hook in hand. "So it's kind of my favorite thing to do."In the last three days, she recruited several people from Rainbow and neighboring Fallbrook to join her cause. "Bringing everyone together in that way over a common kind of unifier has really just made a huge difference, and it's brought our community together as well," Ariosta said. "It might seem a little cheesy, but baby steps are still steps forward, and so that's where we're going from there."Ariosta says a local shipping company called "Going postal" has offered to send the handicrafts every week to Australia, free of charge. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The Fund for the Animals Wildlife Center is at capacity while it cares for a record number of patients.At the center, experts rehabilitate animals they hope to release back into the wild. Most of the predators are kept in the back of the 13 acre property to keep humans from imprinting on them, affecting their ability to survive after release.Staff take extreme care and 'secretly' feed their animals.From January 1to July 1, the center cared for 588 animals. As of Friday, they're currently caring for more than 100, and at capacity.Some of their animals documented in pictures provided to 10News, like an orphaned badger, the first badger the center has had in 20 years. They also have a Great-Horned Owl which was hit by a car."Our patients are one of three things, they're unfortunately orphaned, or ill or injured," director Matt Anderson said.They've seen 35 percent more patients compared to the same time last year, meaning they're caring for 154 more animals."It's what we call baby season, everybody expects it, it's a hectic time, all hands to the deck, the staff are wonderful so we're pushing forward and already have some success stories," Anderson said.The Center is funded through donations and The Humane Society of the US, those dollars critical now more than ever. Another factor behind the boom, higher rain levels meant more food all the way up the food chain."Lots more plant life, and lots more to eat for the prey items that our predators eat," he said that's also what brings predators into our neighborhoods."They're really really good at finding their own food, and so it's best to let them alone in their habitat and enjoy them from a distance," Anderson said.Reminding us how important it is to leave the animals alone so they can survive, go back into that sensitive ecosystem and keep it in balance. 1863

"The fact that the bad guy knows everybody is online."There are some steps you can take to keep your family safe while distance learning.Anefils said to make sure you provide physical supervision while your child is learning.Equally important is practicing good computer habits."By having good anti-virus to prevent malware from spying on your activity and computer updates on schedule," he said.Make sure to set up parental controls on devices being used. He also suggested calling your provider to make sure your home router is updated."A lot of hackers can take advantage of firmware not being updated and compromise your router," Anefils said.Make sure to update your computer regularly. Of the utmost importance, perhaps, is installing a virtual private network or VPN."It basically masks your router's IP address and allows you to surf the web without being spied on," he said.Make sure to avoid public WiFi without a VPN, if at all possible. Don't ever click on unknown links in emails. Prisons across the country have suddenly become ground zero for the coronavirus.In California’s oldest jail, San Quentin State Prison near San Francisco, the number of cases has ballooned from less than 100 to more than 1,000 in two weeks.Attorneys in the area say the outbreak came from a transfer of inmates from the California Institute for Men to San Quentin.In the closed system that is a prison, it can make social distancing a challenge as there is only so much space to house inmates, particularly at a distance.Prison reform advocates say to solve the problem correctional facilities nationwide have turned to solitary confinement."The reports that I’m getting back now is not ‘Hey they put me in solitary for COVID-19.’ It’s, ‘They’re keeping me in solitary because of COVID-19,’” said Johnny Perez.Perez was formerly incarcerated at Riker’s Island in New York City for an armed robbery he committed when he was 21. He served 13 years for the crime, 3 of which were spent in solitary confinement, he says.“[It gave me] thoughts of suicide, volatility in my emotions,” said Perez. “I still need to sleep with the door open at night.”Perez says the experience in solitary can be similar for most people he knows, and thinks it is a dangerous way to combat COVID-19.“[The corrections system] treating you like an animal for the rest of your life says more about our system than it does about our individuals,” he said. “It is creating and lowering this standard of what it means to be put in solitary that is so low that it reverses all the work that we’ve done so far.”Perez is the director of the U.S. Prisons Program for the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, a group that works closely with the ACLU to form Unlock the Box, a national advocacy group fighting to end solitary confinement. Unlock the Box estimates the number of people currently in solitary confinement in U.S. prisons is 300,000; a large jump from the 60,000 it says was in solitary confinement in February.“There is a perpetuation and it is a really terrible cycle,” said Jessica Sandoval, campaign strategist for Unlock the Box. “[Inmates] are not going to report that they feel bad if that’s what the prison is going to do anyway so it’s pretty dangerous.”In an emailed response the Federal Bureau of Prisons did not respond to questions about solitary confinement in response to COVID-19, but it did say other measures it was taking to reduce the spread of the virus in the prison system through universal distribution of PPE, limited visits to those incarcerated, and no inmate transfers between facilities.Sandoval says medical isolation is a better practice, which does not strip inmates of many of their privileges. She also advocates early release for inmates nearing the end of their sentences or in the process of seeking parole."I think there needs to be a reckoning among corrections leaders and governors to say we’re going to do what’s right,” said Sandoval. "We’re going to save lives."According to the National Institute of Corrections it costs ,000 to house someone in solitary confinement for a year, as opposed to ,000 to house someone in the general prison population for a year. 3201
