SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A father and daughter were taken to the hospital for injuries related to an apartment fire in Carmel Valley Tuesday afternoon. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters were called to an apartment complex on the 12000 block of Torrey Bluff Drive around 4:30 p.m. The department says the man was taken to the hospital with burns to his hands and face while his daughter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The fire was reportedly contained to only one room of the apartment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the blaze may have been started by some sort of device the father was using to smoke. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo and Zoo Safari Park combined for a record attendance of more than 5.5 million visitors in 2018, it was announced today.More than 4 million people visited the zoo in 2018 and over 1.5 million visited the Safari Park. It was the first year in the zoo's 100-year history in which attendance surpassed 4 million, according to zoo officials, who believe the appeal of new exhibits such as Walkabout Australia and Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks contributed significantly to the record-setting year."We are delighted to have been able to host more than four million people at the zoo, and I know that a lot of this is due to the wonderful new guest areas and the commitment to guest service shown by our employees every day," said San Diego Zoo Director Dwight Scott. "It has been a pleasure to share our love of wildlife with so many people this year -- and we know that this high attendance will help to fund additional conservation work in the future."Zoo officials also touted the year's conservation efforts of San Diego Zoo Global, the nonprofit that runs the zoo and the Safari Park. The organization was able to continue increasing its work conserving and protecting at-risk species all over the world due, in part, to the record attendance numbers."This attendance record shows us that people care about wildlife, and care about saving species," said Douglas G. San Diego (KGTV) –  Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer Friday announced the expansion of his successful “Play All Day” initiative, a pledge to break ground on or upgrade 50 parks in five years, by adding an additional 15 parks to neighborhoods across the city.   The program was initially proposed during Mayor Kevin Faulconer's 2016 State of the City address and the initiative is a partnership between the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District, designed to maximize public resources and increase the amount of city park space, especially in urban communities. The parks are used by the school system during the day and remain open to the community after school hours.  720

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three men who took part in the shotgun slaying of a Pacific Beach resident late last year pleaded guilty Friday to voluntary manslaughter and assault charges.Carlos Yslas, 25; Pedro Ramirez, 27; and Freddy Sosa, 38, were previously facing murder charges in the Dec. 29, 2018, death of 44-year-old Marcanthony Mendivil, who was killed in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue.Yslas, who admitted to firing the shotgun, faces up to 30 years in state prison when he is sentenced Jan. 10.RELATED: Suspects in fatal Pacific Beach shooting to be arraigned; victim identifiedRamirez, who faces eight years in prison, is also due to be sentenced Jan. 10. Sosa also faces eight years in prison and will be sentenced Nov. 15.A fourth defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, remains charged with murder and assault. He's due back in court next week for a status conference, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 18. Weinberger remains out of custody on million bail.Prosecutors have said that Weinberger lived in the residence where Mendivil was shot in the predawn hours of Dec. 29. However, neither a motive for the slaying, nor the defendants' relationships to each other and the victim, have been disclosed.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting last Dec. 29, San Diego Police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m., Dobbs said.Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati alleged during Yslas and Ramirez's arraignment earlier this year that both men entered the home masked and gloved.Yslas threatened another witness with the shotgun, then fired twice on Mendivil, the prosecutor said. The men then fled the scene in a vehicle, according to Nominati.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged in February in connection with the killing. 2030

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grand jury indicted two San Diego men Thursday on suspicion of blowing up ATM’s in Kearny Mesa and Miramar.Chad Engel, 46, and Scott Petri, 47, were charged with five counts including using explosives for the crimes and conspiracy to commit bank robbery.The first robbery happened July 4, 2017, at the California Coast Credit Union branch ATM on Ruffin Rd. The explosives went off but the ATM was not breached.RELATED: Explosives used in ATM robberiesThe second robbery was on August 13, 2017, at the Chevron gas station on Miramar Rd. Investigators said Engel and Petri drilled a hole in the ATM, filled it with gas, and ignited a fuse. The resulting explosion damaged the ATM and allowed the men to steal ,000, said investigators.Surveillance videos of both crimes were released to find the suspects. 833
