Let's face it, pets are family. And even when you don't have a home, they come first. One non-profit group of dedicated veterinarians, is helping make sure these "street dogs" are getting the care they need, much to the relief of their human companions.Shannon Arakaki is doing her best to comfort her dog Rocky, as he gets his ear drained. After all, she says he's always been there to comfort her."Oh yeah there's been some ups and downs," said Arakaki. "Lived in my truck you know we stay at my truck off and on right now."When Rocky hurt his ear, Arakaki had no idea how she'd deal with it."I don't have the money to go to a vet and this is my only option right now unless you know I'm going to sell my truck," said Arakaki. "I can't do that I'm not going to go live in a tent."That's where one group of veterinarians come in. They are treating Rocky for free."This is phenomenal," Arakaki said. "Because it's so hard and when you're at the point where you don't really have any money and you're trying just basically to survive. They come before you."With just a table and supplies these vets are caring for the pets of people who are homeless or near homeless. They call themselves the Street Dog Coalition, setting up care centers on streets around the country, or in this case, at a shelter."We are not doing major surgeries," said Dr. Jon Geller, who founded the Street Dog Coalition. "We're not doing x-rays but we have to use our x-ray vision which just means a lot of best guessing going on."Dr. Geller says it not only helps pets stay healthy, but also tears down barriers for people who already have enough up."What do you do for a job interview?" Dr. Geller said. "What do you do for a job? There's no doggie daycare and they can't get on the bus and staying over night in shelters but that's in most cases it won't happen."Dr. Geller says sometimes the homeless are judged for having pets, but not here."They will feed their pets first," Dr. Geller said. "So they live pretty good lives and these owners are pretty committed and I think that we should be supportive of their efforts to have pets."They are helping preserve relationships that go beyond mere companionship."Without having somebody for me to give a damn about I may not care about myself as much," Arakaki said. 2324

Less parental warmth and a more harsh work environment affect how aggressive children become and whether they lack empathy and a moral compass, according to a new study.Researchers at the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and Michigan State University studied 227 pairs of identical twins. They analyzed differences in the parenting that each twin experienced to determine whether the differences predicted the emergence of antisocial behaviors.The study found that the twin who experienced harsher treatment and less emotional warmth had a greater chance of showing aggression and a lack of empathy and moral compass.These characteristics are known as callous-unemotional traits."The study convincingly shows that parenting—and not just genes—contributes to the development of risky callous-unemotional traits," said Luke Hyde, U-M associate professor of psychology. "Because identical twins have the same DNA, we can be more sure that the differences in parenting the twins received affects the development of these traits."Parents of the twins completed a 50-item questionnaire about the home environment, establishing their harshness and warmth levels.The work, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, is the latest in a series of studies from Penn's Rebecca Waller, assistant professor of psychology, and colleagues using observation to assess a variety of aspects of parenting. "Some of the early work on callous-unemotional traits focused on their biological bases, like genetics and the brain, making the argument that these traits develop regardless of what is happening in a child's environment, that parenting doesn't matter," said Waller, lead author of the current study. "We felt there must be something we could change in the environment that might prevent a susceptible child from going down the pathway to more severe antisocial behavior."Waller says a potential next step to turn these findings into interventions for families trying to prevent a child from developing these traits or to improve troubling behaviors. "From a real-world standpoint, creating interventions that work practically and are actually able to change behaviors in different types of families is complicated," she said. "But these results show that small differences in how parents care for their children matters. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Scientists are using an autonomous underwater vehicle to help get purified wastewater to your faucets.  The remote-controlled sub operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography helps measure how the purified water mixes with the Lake Jennings reservoir water.It’s one of the state-required steps water officials need to take before purified wastewater from the Padre Dam Water District’s Advanced Water Purification System is introduced to homes through Helix Water District’s Lake Jennings and water treatment facility.“There’s that factor that it’s coming from a waste facility originally.  So, what happens if there’s some sort of failure that didn’t get caught? Well, now there’s a buffer. There’s a buffer. It will sit in the reservoir,” said Helix’s Director of Water Quality Brian Olney.If all goes as planned, Padre Dam will need to expand its Advanced Water Purification System and build a pipeline to deliver that water to Lake Jennings.  Olney said that could happen by 2023. 1045

LITHIA, Fla. — A Tampa Bay teenager is thankful for the device on her wrist after suffering a scary medical episode at The Crossing Church in Brandon, Florida. "I didn't know what was going on at all and it was just out of the blue," Deanna Recktenwald said. A warning appeared notifying the 18-year-old that her resting heart rate hit 190 beats per minute. "It was alarming that the watch was telling us to seek medical attention," said Stacey Recktenwald, Deanna's mother. "I didn't even know that it had the capability of giving us that alert."Stacey Recktenwald is a registered nurse and did not initially question the accuracy of the watch's reading. Staff at a walk-in clinic confirmed the teen's rapid heartbeat. "I was surprised, it was right on," said Stacey.The Recktenwald's said the watch saved Deanna's life. After arriving at the emergency room, doctors at Tampa General Hospital soon discovered Deanna suffers from chronic kidney disease. Both kidneys are only operating at 20 percent and she will likely require a future transplant. "Instantly started to pray and thank God for her having that watch," said Tom Recktenwald, Deanna's father. The high-tech Christmas gift came to the rescue, uncovering a serious health problem that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. "Now that we have some answers to why this is happening we can prevent something major from happening down the road," said Deanna. Stacey Recktenwald recently wrote Apple to thank the tech giant for its life-saving feature.  1601
